We were hoping to do a hike today since the day before was just sitting in the car pretty much. We got a few recommendations to do a hike in the north of the East fjords so it was exactly where we headed in the morning and we found a nice trail to follow. The walk was fairly easy and took around four hours so not too bad. The aim of it was to reach a blue lagoon which is in the middle of massive boulders left over from an avalanche that happened some time ago. We passed a few people along the way but only about eight for the whole time so a lot of time for ourselves which was very nice. From here we headed inland to Reykjahlid which is supposed to be around ... read more

This day we did the least tourist things but by far the most driving. We started to head north through the Eastern fjords but the weather turned bad so it was very slow progress through this area. A very large fog came and made visibility pretty much nonexistent so it was very slow progress for the day. We were lucky enough to get some sun at times though and the views were amazing of the mountains along the coast road. The East is very much of the tourist trail with hardly any traffic at all for most of the time and if only the sun was out it would have been a perfect drive but we have been lucky enough for the other days. Most people choose to skip the Eastern fjords and do the Western ... read more

Once again, waking up in the middle of know where we were excited to do our glacier hike! The bad part of the morning was that we were going to be saying goodbye to our CS friend Alex who had been with us for the first three days of travel. We went our own ways at the Skaftafell NP just before we started out hike and he was planning to hitchhike back to Reykjavik for his flight back to the US tomorrow. Well to our hike.. Seven hours of walking on ice was a different experience for sure. Wearing these boot things with spikes sticking out all the place and pick in hand we headed off. We were quite surprised by how easy it was actually to walk on the ice but going up and down ... read more

After waking up in the middle of know where once again we headed to the waterfall Skogafoss which was 5 minutes away. Another massive wall of water thundering to the ground and this is the second most famous in Iceland. After a hike up to the top of this we hit the road for two hours heading to the massive glacier of Vatnajökull which takes up 8% of the whole country, biggest in Europe. We managed to do a hike here and planned our glacier hike for the next day. It will be our first touristy paid thing to do in Iceland but we are of course unable to do that by ourselves so a tour it is but can be a once in a life time chance really. The hike we done was for only ... read more

Today was all about the Puffins. We were very lucky to end up seeing these little birds actually since Iceland produced the weather we have heard so much about with rain and massive winds. The Puffins are a boat trip to an Island about 30 minutes away and the swell was huge! Made for an interesting trip. So once there, with rain and wind plus leaving our car behind we had 5 hours to do it all. Straight to the tourist office for information and she said w would have to be lucky to see Puffins whilst here but we gave it a go BUT the Puffins were on the other side of the Island. So hitchiking it was and the third car picked us all up and we were quickly to the spot. We bumped ... read more

What a great day we had to start the outdoors of Iceland! We were up early and into the city to pick up a fellow CS’er who had agreed to join us on our trip for the first few days. We headed out and our first stop was Geysir (the blow hole) and we did get a surprise here. With all the other tourists we were very excited to see it in full action and waited then a little puff of water came up no more the five meters high. We were thinking at this stage ‘this is not that exciting’ then we were walking around and a massive gush of water went flying up around 30-40 meters in the air and this was impressive. The water flys up every 5-6 minutes and the crowd is ... read more

We have arrived in Iceland after maybe one of the worst flights we have ever had, the turbulence was terrible over Sweden and Norway with the plane jumping around but we made it safe and sound to rainy Reykjavik. We were a little surprised by how little to do in the city there is, just seems a place to stay a night or two before heading out into the country. We were greeted by our wonderful hosts on arrival into the city who told us all about the country and the economy crash that happened here which is still a fairly hot topic. For the afternoon of our arrival we did not get up to much really and I guess we visited most of the places of interest in the capital. The next day we were ... read more

To experience Sweden in summer is amazing, long and sunny nights, green and calm landscape which can turn to gray and stormy days. People mood changes with the weather and big crowds of people to the parks on a sunny day. The summer in Scandinavia is really short. This summer was extremely long and warm for Swedish people (2 months with sun and +25-30 degrees every day) and everyone is really happy about it. Usually, a summer here used to be just few weeks. For some people this summer is really hard because they are not used to this wonderful weather. They are complaining on warm summer and on cold winters. However, we loved this amazing summer weather. Chris stayed in Sweden while Diana was working in Oslo. Well, Chris loved to experience his new country ... read more

After a hard year in Vilnius University I’m back at my old summer work in Oslo. It is awesome to be back and meet old colleges. Unfortunately, I couldn’t manage to finish my yearly paper earlier and I needed to fix it in same time like I worked. Believe me, it was really hard to study and work in same time, but I have learnt from my mistakes - never leave the studies to last minutes. However, I managed it really well and now I could concentrate on my working holiday. I really enjoyed my work - I was working with older people in the care home. It is a great experience for my future work like a psychologist. Of course, it wasn’t easy every day and we had a challenge to cope with it. Also, ... read more

Europe » Belarus May 20th 2010

After a difficult time getting visas organized we headed into Belarus for five nights. Diana has a good friend living their also so we planned three nights in Minsk before going to visit Ilona and her family in the country side. First, border security takes around two hours to pass by the time they check everything and it is a good sign of the things to come. You will see military presence all over the city in Minsk and can be said that the people are afraid to do anything wrong since ‘they are been watch’ all the time. This can be noticed with the large antenna looking thing above a building that was a gift from Russia that is able to listen into phone calls. Whilst on the government, Diana had a nice little incident ... read more
