Africa » Kenya » Rift Valley Province » Masai Mara NP September 24th 2011

A long and bumpy trip on the road in Kenya’s wildness, and we’re on the way to Masai Mara. The scenery is constantly changing but the terrible road remains the same. Some workers try to fix the road by the hands and put some sand in the holes of the road but it seems it doesn’t stay too long. The Masai Mara is the number one draw card for the country and brings a great deal of income, but the road to the park is crazy, maybe it adds to the wilderness part of the trip. It is a long but interesting trip through Kenya’s beautiful landscapes and the dusty villages. It seems that the locals have no rush in their lives. The kids are waiving at the passing cars and they are really cute – ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Nairobi Province » Nairobi September 22nd 2011

Africa time – no hurry in Africa. It is quite strange that people don’t care about time, no plans and living in the moment, and not tomorrow. If a Kenyan says to you that they will meet you in the afternoon then you can wait a period between 2-6pm. It is rarely a Kenyan will use the actual time and they use the terms like morning, afternoon, evening etc. But Kenyan business people know the strict time in the Western world and suddenly the Kenyan do follow the actually time. Actually, sometimes it is hard to understand how a business runs in Africa.. well we mean the business meetings, but how strange it sounds but it works really well. We experienced this a few times that few minutes can take hours. You can forget the strict ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul September 13th 2011

A melting pot where east meets west and it seems here that anything is possible. It is a huge city although it does seem to be fairly small in the city centre and it is not until you head to one of Islands that you realize how big it is. After a one hour boat trip to the largest of the islands the panoramic view or the city reaches as far as the eye can see. It was quite strange though that it is common, even in this city to bump into people you may know as our host was telling us. This even happened to us on several occasions as we just happened to bump into friends from Belgium and then two hours latter bump into our host. It is interesting to talk to the ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul September 9th 2011

Istanbul is a huge city and it is difficult to gain a sense of fully understanding the city due to the complexity of it all. According Lonely Planet, in Istanbul there are between 12-19 million people (this is double size of whole Sweden or almost like whole Australia :)), but the locals say the figure is close to 16 million. We were lucky enough to find a host whom is not in the touristic area and it takes one hour drive to the city (JUST around 30km), and it is still same city, crazy huh. This area was has been recently built to accommodate the growing population which is close to Sariyer and 15 minutes from the black sea. This area is surrounded by forest and sea, and quite calm compare to other areas in Istanbul. ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Stockholm County » Stockholm July 10th 2011

Back into Stockholm with our friend who is visiting for a little over a week and we were lucky enough to be greeted by some amazing weather. This made for some great sightseeing during our time there in which it seemed that we walked the entire city checking things out. One thing that is a must when in Stockholm is doing one of the many boat cruises that will tell about the history of the city and also some interesting facts also. What Chris didn’t realize is that Stockholm is on a fresh water lake, well most of it and the water are controlled be several dykes that are set up under the bridges. Also the water right in the middle of city is safe enough to drink and swim in and this is quite noticeable ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague May 22nd 2011

This trip was a little different and absolutely fantastic. Well we went to Prague to meet Chris’ brother Mathew and his girlfriend Lorien who are doing a Euro trip for few weeks. It was Diana’s third trip to Czech Republic and Chris’ first time, and he always wanted to visit this corner of the world so it was a perfect time to explore the city. We arrived to Prague a day before Mathew and Lorien, and we did decide to stay at a hostel since we’ll spend all the time with the family. Well we are used to stay with some CS:ers because we are keen to see not touristic part of the city as well. We are low budget traveler, we did decide to book a hostel a little out of the city center and ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Örebro County » Örebro January 7th 2011

We thought it is about time that we wrote about this as between us we have stayed in cities/towns for well over a year of nights and not paid anything.. Sounds pretty good hey! For the backpacker and traveller this is great but we will stress this is not for everyone. We are sure most of you have heard of Couchsurfing but here we will write our thoughts on this magical site which has changed our lives completely. So what is Couchsurfing? A website that allows people to exchange a place to sleep for one to as many nights as they arrange. Couchsurfing is not only about getting a free nights’ accommodation though.. Whilst this is good it is by far not the best part of this concept. Oh and it has over 2.4 million members ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Norrbotten County » Kiruna January 4th 2011

Continuing on from the previous blog. Every evening we took a walk to the north side of Kiruna in the hope of seeing the Northern lights and one night we got to see this clearly and we couldn’t believe our eyes. They were really strong green and really close to us, and also this time we could see red dancing along with the green. We headed right into the forest so that the city lights weren’t disturbing to take pictures. We think that we were really lucky to see this phenomena with own eyes – it was cold, clear night with many stars. Also this was the time when we got to see true husky’s, a breeder was taking four for a walk where we were sitting in the snow and got to learn quite a ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Norrbotten County » Kiruna January 2nd 2011

Happy New Year Everyone!!! Kiruna, the place where you can see a sunrise and sunset at the same time, hear and feel explosions from the underground at 1am every morning, witness the amazing sight of the Northern lights and much more. The arctic area of Sweden is just a fantastic spot in the world to celebrate the beginning of New Year. Chris has been in the north of Scandinavia before (but in summer time) and for Diana is first time in the north. It is awesome to experience real winter in Arctic Circle. Well Kiruna is a small city in the north of Sweden, but the main spot for Swedish Lapland. The population reaches 20.000 inhabitants, but it seems much bigger because it is a touristic place also. Quite cosy, friendly and beautiful city. The first ... read more
