Europe » Luxembourg September 10th 2010

When it comes to Luxembourg and the tourist trail it is often missed or even drove through without knowing you have been in and out of a country in two or so hours. We were surprised by what Luxembourg has to offer and in particular once outside the city and visiting the country you will come across many picturesque villages amongst a forest and quite often having a castle overlooking proceedings. Luxembourg the city itself has plenty of green around the city and a highlight for us was the visiting the underground tunnels for the old castle that seem to go on forever. It has become into disrepair of late but since they recently started to uncover some important artefacts they are looking after the old castle very well now and paying a fee is a ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Saint-Raphael » Brugge September 9th 2010

Walking through the Smedenpoort gate into the old city of Brugges and turning around, you get to view how defensive walls were made in the Middle Ages with two canals and two sand walls. With closer inspection on the gate a bronze skull is hanging from this which is a copy of one poor chap who was a traitor in 1688. This is an idea of what to expect in the city which seems more like an outdoor museum. It is little wonder why this place is Belgium’s main tourist draw card and the city makes the most of this as you will be sure to hear the trotting of horse drawn carriages cruising around the copestone streets with a constant line of eagerly waiting tourists to have a turn. Not only are the streets full ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Brussels-Capital Region » Brussels September 8th 2010

Heading into Brussels and it is all about the chocolate and well… the peeing boy. Maybe one of the different must sees (if not the most) in a capital city. Not too sure what it is about Brussels but we came across several peeing objects during our time here, the girl squatting, and the dog with his leg cocked against a pole. I understand the boy (manneken pis) one as it is believed the boy was putting out a fire that was in the city but the others are quite funny to see and has been standing there since the 14th century. Well to the chocolate, everything you could possibly imagine here. Big debate one who is the best.. Swiss or Belgium?? We are still undecided so will move onto other information which seems to be ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » Province of Utrecht » Utrecht September 4th 2010

Our final stop in the Netherlands was the university city of Utrecht located around 40 min south of Amsterdam. This is a large university city and we happened to turn up on a weekend when the sun was shining so it was extremly busy but with a great atmosphere. Also during our time in the city a large gothic festival was on as well so a wide range of people were scattered around the city. The city is just like the other Dutch citied we have visited with canals, tall people, bikes and pretty old buildings everywhere you look. Utrecht seems to us a a party town as it is all we were seeing from the time we arrived to the time we left, maybe a cheaper alternative than Amsterdam as in 30 minutes we seen ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » North Holland » Haarlem September 2nd 2010

A smaller little city north of Amsterdam is Haarlem. Not far at all actually with only fifteen minutes on the train and is perfect for a day trip from Amsterdam but we managed to stay for two nights in the end. It is also a great alternative base than Amsterdam to not only for the tourist to Amsterdam but the locals for the cheaper prices and much quieter streets. It has all the charm that is expected in a small tourist town but unlucky for us the weather turned bad for the two days we were visiting and constant storms were coming and going. We did still manage to do some walking around the city, no major tourist attractions just small alleys ways and much cleaner dykes that the ones in Amsterdam. We pretty much took ... read more

Amsterdam! Not one other city can come close to the open city. For some reason it has taken us a long time to finally visit here but good things come to those who wait. Gee where to start.. Well guess should kick of with the red light district. Right in the smack bang middle of the city 5 minute walk from the train station when arriving. Is it busy? Yes, all day you can see guys sneaking out of the little ’shops’ and bolting right up an alley was to avoid the cheers of the tourists. And of course the coffee shops.. Scattered all through the city but our favorite one would have to be the ‘old church’ coffee shop which is in the heart of the red light district and of course next to a ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City August 18th 2010

From Iceland we had a stopover in London for four nights. We were couchsurfing with a couple from NZ and they were fantastic. We ended up spending more time with them than exploring London, well we both have been before several times so not too much new things to visit. On our first day we went and had lunch with Erin which was very nice, well Diana had some grubs in her food but other than that it nice. Something freaky about the place Erin is living in, it is the exact same place I rented two years ago! Out of all the places in London to live we ended up in the exact same place without knowing is very freaky if you ask me. Well we walked around quite a lot for the first two ... read more

For our eleventh day in Iceland it was quite a lot of driving. First we headed from the tiny little town over some mountains and we noticed that we didn’t see any other cars for the first hour or so of driving which made it very nice. We had found out that the weather was going to be pretty bad for the rest of our time in Iceland so we got moving to a peninsula that goes of the north which is supposed to have many seals. The first spot that was recommended to us had nothing so we kept driving but our next place we got very lucky along with a hand full of other tourists. They were laying around taking life easy until they headed out fishing jumping through the water which looked pretty ... read more

Waking up overlooking the magnificent fjord and bird crap all over the tent and car was an interesting way to start the morning. We had planned to do a whale watching tour in the morning but further investigation informed us that the bigger whales had been gone for 1 ½ months and only can see dolpins which we have done before so no need to spend 50 Euro on that. We headed away to Akureyri which is the bigger city of the North and is like all the other places located in a magnificant location. We actually prefer this city than the capital Rekeyvik as it is a lot nicer with the buildings and things to do. We checked out the strange looking church and had the local ice cream (the main thing the tourist people ... read more

Europe » Iceland » North August 10th 2010

We are now in the North East of the country and today we did a few hikes around the town of Reykjahlio which is a thermal area with steam all over the place. We can’t remember all the names of the different places that we went and visited but what we do know that they are very different places to see. The steam coming out of the ground in some spots is unbelievably hot with the ground over 100 deg. The first hike took around two hours so we still had much time to head to do another hike close by and this was more challenging. We took of heading to a thermal pool which is in a cave. The water is way too hot to bath in but interesting to see this underground with rocks ... read more
