Well the time had come for me to go for a dream of mine that I had wanted to do for such a long time, I was heading to Mt Everest Base Camp. I was going to be going solo but at the Kathmandu airport I bumped into another lad from the US and he was planning to do the same sort of thing so we teamed up and headed on our way. The flight in Lukla where the hike starts was interesting and a look on youtube and type in Lukla alot of things will come up with the airstrip and the bad things that have happened there and only 2 months before we arrived there as well. Anyway we headed of on our hike and first day we made it Monjo and this was ... read more

After saying good bye to Diana and before I started the Mt Everest hike I had around a week to have a look around Nepal.. (Also always ask for an upgrade, they let me have first class from somewhere in the Middle East to Kathmandu) I had a few nights in Kathmandu with a day trip to Patan which is well worth the effort! The city there has great buildings and is much less busy than Kathmandu which is very nice to see. One thing on Kathmandu that sticks in my mind is that at 6 or 7pm each night the power goes out for the whole city! What is with that? The capital city of a country and during the whole night there is no power for anyone which just makes more noise around the ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Stockholm County » Stockholm December 31st 2008

So completely new plans for me this was from two months ago but I had a fantastic time over in Sweden for new years and the most fun (and scary) would have been meeting Diana's family.. of course there is the language barrier to begin with but lucky they all know English enough to communicate but it shows how lazy native English speakers are when we think there is no need to be learning another language so for me it is time to learn :) News years we went to Stockholm to meet up with Diana's friends and had a fantastic, but freezing night! Well for me anyway I was freezing and not use to having a cold New Years at all. It was a couchsurfing party we went to and there were people from ... read more

Lithuania and Vilnius.. A place that has now changed me in so many ways by the time I had left the country to be heading back to Australia. First stop in Lithuania was the hill of crosses and i remember thinking this is one creepy place.. It is not just one hill of crosses either, the whole area is completely covered in them and an amazing sight when first seen. It is hard to get to though from the city that is close by if not having a car. It ended up a local bus trip, guessing where to get of then walking for a hour or so to the hill. Getting back was worse and since I had a bus to catch I ended up rushing through the place. Next stop was Kaunas and it ... read more

Europe » Poland October 28th 2008

Main thing for me when thinking about Poland is the events of the World War and trying to find out what happened here and get the local point of view who are still very keen to tell there stories passed down from Parents, Grandparents or there own tales. I got some very got insight with what happened there whilst staying with some very nice people in Warsaw and Krakow. First I was in Warsaw where the whole city was completly destroyed 85% but they have managed to rebuild the old town to exactly the way it was before the war started. You will always hear about the Warsaw Uprising that happed here. The human sacrifices just during the Uprising in Warsaw for 63 days, 15,200 insurgents killed and missing, 5,000 wounded, 15,000 sent to POW camps. ... read more

Autum has arrived here in Latvia now and the change of secnery is fantastic exp in the town of Sigulda where it is the 'extreme sports' capital of Latvia. First though I arrived in Riga from Estonia and meet up with my host in the city and back to her place to have a quick chat, then out for a massive meal then heading out. She was working at a club in the city so that was perfect for me knowing someone behind the bar always helps. Also I got to meet up with a friend from Ireland that I had meet 18 months ago and it is always fantastic to catch up with people that you have meet on your travels again. Next night in Riga just happened to be my hosts birthday party at ... read more

Europe » Estonia » Tallinn October 9th 2008

Into the Baltic Countries now and getting of the ferry from Helsinki I arrived in Tallinn with the famous only surviving walled old town in this area. It really is an amazing place to wander through and feels like you have taken a step back in time when first arriving walking through the enterance of the wall into all the old buildings that you will find. There is plenty to see when wandering around and a good few days is needed to explore just the old city which is not that big at all but on the outskirts of the city there are plenty more to see. I went and checked out the Art Museum that just got voted the best in Europe 08 and the open air museum north of the city on the coast ... read more

Heading through south Finland to check out the two main citys Tampere and Helsinki when disaster broke! But got to do some shopping out of it in the end so not to bad. Doing my washing in Tampere one night and hanging out all my clothes and I mean the lot except for a pair of shorts, shirt, undies and socks that I was wearing only to find the rest gone the very next morning. Not really good at all but at least in Helsinki i got to see all the shops there I guess. But who would want some old backpacking persons clothes anyway... Anyway Tampere was more partying the first night there and sightseeing the next day excetp for the people that I meet with asked if I wanted to go for beers in ... read more

Europe » Finland » Lapland » Rovaniemi September 30th 2008

Finish people are the most crazy people I have ever meet by far and yes that is me naked in a sauna, that info is at the bottom.. When traveling up in the Lapland part they are extremely over the top expecually when on the drink. I was up in Rovamanni when Santa's offical residence is and headed out with the people I was staying with and my god was it crazy. They just dont care about anything or anyone the people up there but on the other hand it made for a great few nights out! There local drink shot they have is the worst thing I have ever had and they have it like water, no wonder there are lots of trouble up in that area! It is on the other hand a nice ... read more

Europe » Norway » Northern Norway » Tromsø September 22nd 2008

It is just simply amazing in Norway! I had it soo good when travelling around this country and I got very lucky with the weather from what I hear which of course makes it a lot better. After a couple of relaxing days in Oslo I started heading more North to a city called Trondheim about 1/4 of the way up in Norway, not a great deal to do in this city so spend the day with my French host walking around the place (he just arrived there as well) exploring. Not a very big place at all this city and since I only had one night there i didn't get to get out of the city into the country which I was really looking forward to. Just the bus and train trips between the places ... read more
