This place is absolute amazing and the scenery is indescribable, and it is why Fort Portal has been called the mother of pearl (if Uganda is Pearl of Africa), but our bad experiences, which we will describe in next blog, hasn’t changed our view of this amazing place on the earth but definitely changed our opinion about Ugandans. In the middle of Uganda’s mountains surrounded by crater lakes you will find lush forests, wild animals and view towards Democratic Republic of the Congo, there is a small village where did we stay with a family for one week. Fort Portal is a small town but the biggest in this area and it isn’t a big deal. When you need to charge your mobile phone, laptop, make shopping or you have some troubles to figure out (which ... read more

Africa » Uganda » Central Region » Kampala November 4th 2011

The capital city, Kampala makes a great introduction of Uganda since it is highly developed and with a warm atmosphere. You’ll walk through the streets and strangers will great you “Hi, how are you?” and you’ll feel that you’re surround by lovely people. Don’t hesitate to ask for help and they will be more than happy to help, and they won’t ask you for money. If you need any help so we have learnt that best to begin the conversation with “Hi, how are you?” and later on ask what kind of information do you need. It has happened many times that we’re just saying “Hi” and asking for the direction but getting answer “I’m fine”. Well they are expecting that you’ll ask how they are doing today. Kampala is a green and hilly city, and ... read more

Africa » Uganda » Eastern Region » Jinja October 26th 2011

The first thing we noticed when entering Uganda from Kenya was how green it is here. It is a nice surprise to see this instead of the constant dust that is thrown all over us when a breath of wind passes. As well the roads are surprisingly good and our head got a nice break from hitting our head all the time. After a hectic hitching experience from the border we arrived in Jinja which is famous for being the town at the beginning of the mighty Nile River. To be honest, if the Nile wasn’t here there would not be too much of a reason to stop in the town since everything is based around the river, well and Lake Victoria as well. The town itself is pretty basic but compared to Kenya (it is ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Rift Valley Province » Eldoret October 24th 2011

The first thing you think when you do hear the town Eldoret is cheese and elite runners of the world. The development in this small town is considerably high and it is one of the most develop places in the country we have seen except Nairobi. And the best thing, you won’t be bothered by annoying people (just rarely street children will ask you for money) and you’ll walk through the town with smiling people around you who will great you with a nice “Hello muzungu! How are you, mzungu?”. This is because unlike most of the rest of the country this town does not rely mostly on tourism to support itself so tourists are pretty much left alone. Actually we got a great explanation of “mzungu” since we though this word has a negative meaning ... read more

For the story of the breakaway, how we were able to get photos of children in cells and how we become part of a gang, it is towards the end of the blog. It was like a fresh air to come back to the civilization from the Masai village. You know, small things are building up your comfortable daily life. A simple thing like a mirror – to see yourself in the mirror it wasn’t the best view we have seen but to understand what we have been through. The reflection in the shop mirror showed absolute swollen lips (or sun burnt) of Chris and Diana still was picking up the small branches from the long hair. Actually we didn’t feel really comfortable to walk dirty (without a shower or some personal care under one week’s ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Rift Valley Province » Nakuru October 13th 2011

This isn’t a touristic Masai experience at all… but this is the circle of life where life and death is happening on a regular basis, and you have to struggle to survive… like Darwin said: “The strongest will survive” and this is how it goes in middle of the Savanna. The conception of “living” isn’t existing because you have to survive and taken wrong path could lead you to death. Living takes a lot of effort and you’ll understand that nothing is easy in middle of Savanna where wild animals are going on instincts and trying to survive as well. So it wouldn’t help to talk nicely and friendly, and get a compromise with a lion or an elephant in the middle of nowhere… you are just a small human being and a tasty bite for ... read more

So after some time here we are getting quite use to the idea of haggling for pretty much everything that we need to buy. Of course some things you get the idea that the price is set, grocery stores for example and museums for another. But something strange happened the other day, when we were about to go into one of these museums. We noticed the price for tourists which were 500 shillings and the locals 100 shillings. This difference in price is for every tourist attraction in Kenya and it is something you just need to put up with. Although today when we noticed the difference we were sort of discussing the topic between ourselves and said 100 shillings a little louder. We then got a response ‘400’… We were like what? 400 what? We ... read more

White sand, sky blue and warm water make this place to a tourist paradise. Diani Beach is placed just few kilometers from Mombasa but the atmosphere is completely different. It isn’t hard to understand why this place is common among the tourists. Actually this place contains many nice and friendly resorts, and you can choose between low and high budget accommodation which makes a bigger flexibility and more visitors every year. Still Diani Beach is really popular in the weekends and the locals are coming for a great party and a dip in the clear blue water. If you want avoid crowded beach and hassling, let’s come under the working days and enjoy this wonderful and calm surrounding. But still it isn’t really easy to avoid the beach boys who are offering you a snorkeling, boat ... read more

Jambo, where are you from? This question you hear many times per day from the locals here. It sounds quite friendly and welcoming but you have to be careful with you answer. They are waiting that you’ll say that you are from USA, Australia, Canada, England, Scandinavia and all other richer countries in the world, and then the prices are increasing at least five times than to the locals. People are trying to figure out and guessing there are you from all the time and after our six nights here we were quickly got tired of this and tried to figure out which country we would like to belong to and have tried with South Africa, Sweden, Australia and Lithuania. We did understand that Lithuania influence them best because they don’t know where it is and ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Rift Valley Province » Lake Nakuru NP September 27th 2011

It is hard to compete with Masai Mara but these two National Parks gave it a good shot. After an endless drive from Masia Mara we arrived to the Lake Nakuru Nation Park and stayed just outside the entrance for the night so we could get in nice and early. One main thing we were hoping to see here is some Rhino which we were not able to locate in Masai Mara and to our luck within the first thirty minutes we were eye to eye with a mother and baby white (indeed they are just white on the nose but have a light gray body) Rhino. This park has a good number of both black and white rhino, main difference is the white are eating grass mostly and black are eating branches from trees. Each ... read more
