North America » United States » Minnesota » Minneapolis September 25th 2013

Got up early - made a quick coffee and took to the road pj's and all. Drove 100 miles along the interstate before stopping at a rest area - got dressed and had breakfast at a picnic table in the rest area...oh the joys of travelling in an RV. Continued along the highway to Minneapolis admiring all the lakes along the highway. Minnesota is known as the state with 10,000 lakes and it is easy to see why. They are everywhere - all shapes and sizes - some folks lucky enough to have built their homes right alongside the lakes. Forgot to mention - we have seen quite a bit of road kill from Montana to Minnesota - mostly deer, coyote and skunks. This section of driving today has mostly been through corn farming territory. Driving ... read more

North America » United States » North Dakota September 24th 2013

Last night was the noisiest sleep we have had yet on this trip. Every truck passing through the interstate highway 94 must have stopped by here. About 2am a large rig carrying a full load of livestock parked up next to us - kept his motor going for the next four hours. You could hear the cattle moving around in the truck and of course the occasional "moo". He finally left at 6amjust when we needed to get up and get moving too. Drove onto Jamestown to visit Frontier Village - a recreated prairie town. Admission here is free they just ask for a Donation - well worth a stop and a good donation. The Main Street has 24 buildings that houses artifacts and antiques from the pioneering days of North Dakota. This is also the ... read more

North America » United States » North Dakota » Bismarck September 23rd 2013

After leaving Dickinson our first detour of the day was "The Enchanted Highway", a 32 mile stretch of highway starting at Interstate 94. This highway features some of the world's largest scrap metal sculptures. In fact, the sculpture "Geese in Flight", is currently listed in the Guinness World Book of Records as the Largest Scrap Metal Sculpture in the entire world. Currently, the Enchanted Highway consists of 6 extremely large metal sculptures depicting geese, deer, pheasants, grasshoppers, Teddy Roosevelt, and even a complete Tin Family. The artist responsible for this awesome creation, Regent native Gary Greff, plans on adding even more giant sculptures to the highway in the upcoming years. The sculptures finish in the small town of Regent - where there's not a lot to see but we got some good photos of the place. ... read more

North America » United States » North Dakota » Dickinson September 22nd 2013

Had a good nights rest in the fairground camp at Plentywood. On the road by 8.30am for another long drive. First stop was Sidney where we picked up a few grocery items. Back to the USA prices - yippee! Even out here in the middle of nowhere prices are still cheaper than Canada (although the scenery doesn't quite match that of Banff!). From about Sidney on the scenery did change and it became more interesting. Plenty of rolling hills, dairy cattle and green farming pastures along the way. Made a stop at Glendive where there is a State Park - Makoshika State Park. Checked out the visitor centre which has a self guided tour that chronicles 74 million years of Eastern Montana history. Includes displays of fossils, a Triceratops skull and other artifacts. The area around ... read more

North America » Canada » Saskatchewan » Moose Jaw September 21st 2013

Left Brook 9.30am for our drive to Moose Jaw - Saskatchewan. There is not a lot to blog about this drive except to say it is a long drive on an open, flat highway with plain-lands everywhere you look. The sea of grains along the highway is sometimes interrupted by some dairy cattle or an oil drill but apart from that it is uneventful. The trans Canada highway through Saskatchewan is in good condition and used by big rigs as well as everyday vehicles. The Canada Pacific also follows this highway and we saw numerous freight trains carrying many carriages along on their journeys. The province of Saskatchewan is known as the "Land of the Living Skies". Most people use Saskatchewan as a way of getting to someplace else - which is exactly what we were ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Calgary September 20th 2013

Beautiful sunny day here in Calgary - cool in the morning but reached a maximum of 25 degrees C. Just perfect. We were straight out of the Casino carpark before 7.30am. We were off to visit the Heritage Park historical museum and Gasoline Alley this morning so we dove there, parked at the marina - had breakfast and did a tidy up of the RV before going over to the park. When we went to purchase our admission tickets we were advised that the park was closed on week days now that it was fall and only open weekends. A kind volunteer felt sorry for us and let us in to explore the place. It was great as we had the place to ourselves. We checked out the historical village and it's surrounds. We couldn't go ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park September 19th 2013

Amazingly, stunning and beautiful day here in Banff. Yes it is cold but looking out the window of the RV we just couldn't wait to explore this majestic looking place. The town of Banff is quite large and gets extremely busy with large amounts of tour buses stopping here each day for visitors to purchase souvenirs and explore the township. Banff is Canada's highest town sitting at 1,384m above sea level. I visited a washroom (as the Canadians called them - Australians call them toilets and Americans call them bathrooms) and the atmosphere in here was quite unique. There was classical music playing in the background! Certainly made me want to stay a little longer! First adventure of the day was a drive up to Sulphur Mountain for the Gondola ride up to the summit. It ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park September 18th 2013

Last night Rain fell for the majority of the night. It always sounds louder on the roof of the RV then it really is. The pitter patter of the rain is very relaxing and makes it hard to get out of the warm bed in the morning. Woke up to the sound of the train tooting as it went through the village. The sound echoed loudly through the woods. Wouldn't mind if we had to wake up to this every day. Since it was raining we put on our wet weather gear ready for our hike to the Trail of The six glacier tea house - a 5.5km hike one way from Lake Louise. First up was photos of the iconic Lake Louise although the Victoria Glacier that hangs over the lake was not visible today ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Lake Louise September 17th 2013

Ready to hit the road at 7.30am after having a quick look at Sunwapta Falls. Like all the other falls we have seen over the past few days it was impressive. Today we are driving the Icefield Parkway from Jasper to Lake Louise. It is a stretch of road almost 200km long - but don't expect to be able to drive it in a few hours. The drive is through some pretty spectacular sights and there are photos and hikes to be taken around every corner! The Icefields Parkway (highway 93) traverses high elevation (2,088m) mountain terrain. During the winter months snow chains are required for driving this road. In this blog today I will list the places of interest we stopped along the journey to our destination of Lake Louise: View point to photographs three ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Jasper September 16th 2013

Left our camp spot at Clearwater just after 7am ready for the drive to Jasper.Rain fell quite heavy during the night and in the morning it was cloudy with intermittent showers. It was nice to see the rain today after several very hot, dry days - just the cool break we needed.Couldn't resist stopping by "mad river" shortly after leaving the camp site to grab a few snaps. The river was flowing quickly over pebbles and rocks - looked so serene and peaceful. Drove through the small town of Blue River and then took a break at Valemount's Visitor Centre. Used the wi-fi to upload blog and check emails. Valemount is one of the larger towns we have passed through and is not far from the Alberta border.Short drive past Valemount was Rearguard falls - our ... read more
