Early morning start to make the most of day exploring the area - Soldotna to Seward. We bought ourselves a thermos and now we can stop at the garages along the way and fill up the thermos with brewed coffee for under $2. Drove to Coopers Landing admiring the Kenai river along the way. Found a picnic area close by the river to have breakfast. The water is so blue it is hard to believe it is even real. It was just like looking at a postcard picture but we were there! Watched people fishing in small boats - salmon jumping everywhere. One of joys of independent travel is taking detours and discovering sights you never knew existed. Today was one of those days. We took a side road off the highway into Chugach national forest ... read more

Had a good night sleep at the RV Park. Took a drive along the spit and snapped a few photos of the area before heading over to the visitors centre for maps and info on the local area. Geoff is keen to take some good quality photos of eagles and other wildlife. So far he hasn't been lucky. The ocean and islands visitors centre at Homer is well worth as stop over. Lots of exhibits for the public and the staff are helpful too. Headed over to the public library to use the wi-fi as the free wi-fi in the RV park was absolutely useless. Organised all our receipts to send to Celebrity Cruises for refund of expenses. Needed to get that done as it's too easy to lose the receipts. Very nice library here at ... read more

Woke up bright and early this morning. As we had spent the night in a pull over on the side of the Seward Highway. Pleased to say it was another bright sunny day. We drove for a couple of hours until we reached Sterling. Stopped off at a drive thru coffee store and then had a look at some amazing wood carvings which were right next store to the coffee store. Alaska has a lot of drive thru coffee houses around. These coffee houses are like small cabins placed in car parks, shopping centres or just plain anywhere. You can drive through or just walk up to the counter. Great small business idea. We passed through Coopers landing where will be returning in a few days to do a river raft. Hoping to see some wildlife ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Anchorage August 24th 2013

Had a sleep in this morning...totally exhausted! The Arctic Adventure Hostel provided us with a bed for the night. It was very clean and the shared bathroom was kept immaculate. The care taker Tiffany was a fine young lady with a great smile and personality. Took a taxi to pick up the RV. There was a few hours delay waiting for the RV to be serviced and detailed so we went for a walk over to the mall and had lunch at the grocery store. that helped to fill in a bit of time. RV was ready at 4pm. The manager of the RV place kept us amused within his stories of growing up in Alaska. Unpacked our gear into our new home...what a relief to be able to put clothes away out of a suitcase. Stocked ... read more

Only caught a couple of hours sleep last night after we checked into hotel, did the washing/ drying, caught up on emails etc. Up at 5am, got a taxi to the train station to check in for the 4 hour scenic journey. Train left Anchorage station at 6.45am. We bought adventure class tickets for the journey which meant we got to sit in the upper level glass dome carriages. It certainly was a treat - the scenery was amazing..words can't describe how spectacular and large this place is..we saw hundreds of glaciers on this train journey. If this is a sign of the scenery we are going to experience of the next few weeks - it is certainly going to great some fantastic memories for our photo albums. Learnt some interesting facts about Alaska today - ... read more

Each time we heard the ding dong over the past few days we braced ourselves for the news. The ding dong was followed by the captain of the millineum updating the crew and guests about our fate. Organising some 2000 people off this ship was an enormous job. 30 staff were flown in from Miami to assist with the task. Trust me it got ugly several times. Guests were angry and frustrated. The refund was not enough we all wanted to get off and go to our final destinations. We were given promises and then they were taken away as quick as they were given. Having said this I must once again say that the crew and staff are so friendly and helpful. The ship is great and if the problems with the motor haven't have ... read more

Well..the news we knew that was coming...our ship s not able to be repaired. She needs to be taken to Victoria BC to be repaired in the dry dock! Kinda thought this was going to happen! The news came through about 9am this morning. Captain has advised that all guests will be receiving 100 % refund of the fare paid and will receive a voucher for another cruise with Celebrity for the same mount. Looks like we will be back for the summer cruise season 2014. This is the only cruise Geoff and I wanted to do so we won't be giving up this offer! Must say that the staff are all fantastic people. They don't get paid a lot but they always have a smile and are very helpful. We really don't realise how lucky ... read more

Boarding onto the ship went smooth considering we had to go through USA customs and everything. We were very happy with our choice of stateroom on the ship. Room 7003 with a forward facing porthole. No people traffic as we are right at the front of the ship. Spent the afternoon exploring the ship...wow it's huge. We have never cruised before so this is a whole new experience. The food is great..so much of it everywhere you turn. They serve over 9000 meals a day on this ship. We went to a show this evening at the theatre then dinner at the restaurant. Good service and great food. Next day was a sailing day so we relaxed and watched the view from the deck. Food is so plentiful..you roll into bed every night! We also did ... read more

Got to have a sleep in this morning..really needed that! Breakfast over at Tim Hortons then for a walk to the harbour to check out our cruise ship. Wow! So large. Walked around the harbour, took a few photos then back to hotel to wait for the shuttle bus to take luggage down to the terminal.... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver August 15th 2013

Train to Vancouver leaving Seattle at 7.40am. Easy taxi ride from the b&b to King Street station. We purchased business class seats for the trip - check in was easy and quick. Train left on time and once settled we went to the dining room carriage for some breakfast. The train is called the "Cascade" and it's a nice scenic way to make the crossing into Canada. Arrived in Vancouver at midday and got through customs without much delay. Caught a taxi to our hotel in downtown Vancouver. Taxi was cheaper than using public transport. Only $9 fare for the ride and certainly saved us a lot of hassle. We are staying at the Days Inn Downtown. It is an older hotel and the rooms are small but it is clean, the staff are very friendly ... read more
