As planned we were up early and ready to hit the road by 7.30am. It was brilliant travelling early on the roads - not much traffic to contend with at all. Had only driven a short way when we came across a stunning lake that was hugging the highway. The lake was called Green lake and it certainly lived up to its name. Grabbed a few shots and kept travelling. Shortly after we arrived at Nairn Falls Provincial Park. We decided to take a brisk 3km return hike to check out the falls. The hike took us through a mixed forest of Douglas-fir, western red cedar, western hemlock and paper birch trees. Nairn Falls is home to the only species of boa constrictor in Canada. This boa feeds on small rodents it finds in the leaf ... read more

Woke up to a magnificent looking day And the sound of autumn leaves falling of the RV roof. Sun was shining and we both felt better after a good nights sleep. It has been a full on trip - so not much rest time. Organised to stay another night in the Riverside Park although we are moving to a cheaper site $36.75 with power and water. Whistler is of course home to the 2010 Winter Olympics. The village is a very large area with plenty of shops and restaurants to keep you busy for ages. The homes that surround the village look very plush and there is a never ending stream of high quality hotels in the area as well. Headed off to the Whistler Gondola for some exploration of the Peak to Peak Gondola. This ... read more

Well, today we pick up our 25ft RV from Cruise Canada and commence another leg of our Canada journey. Vancouver has been great and we enjoyed our 3 night stay at the Ramada Exhibition Park. For around $100 a night it has been great. The place is in a central location And the staff are super friendly and extremely helpful. No complaints from us but we long for the freedom of travelling in the RV..it has become the central focus of this holiday. Had plans of going down to Stanley Park in the morning but we are so tired...lots of walking over past couple of days so we took the bus downtown and had coffee/donuts at Tim Hortons in Burrard Street and worked out our travel plan out to the RV depot. Caught the Canada Line ... read more

Plan for the day was: Granville Island, Chinese gardens and Gastown. Hotel staff were happy to help us work out our travel plans for the day so we got on the bus and went over to Granville Island market place - A good 1/2 hour bus ride away. The Granville Public Market sells local fresh produce and is a very popular place for locals and tourists alike. Great fresh foods, vibrant colours of fresh flowers and plenty of fresh foods to Sample along the way. Stopped at the Granville Island Brewery and had a sampler of beers. We both agreed the beers were just ok but we've tasted much better - still it was good to have a coldie and sit down for a while. Next was a ride on the Aqua Bus along False Creek ... read more

Today's activities are Grouse Mountain and Capilano Suspension Bridge. After working out the public transport we caught the bus outside of hotel to Canada Place. We purchased our tickets for these activities from a booth here then got on the free bus to Grouse Mountain. Bus tickets were $2.75 and are good for 90 minutes. We purchased the "ultimate experience" for the Grouse Mountain activities. $52.95 per adult and worth every cent of it. Grouse Mountain is one of the North Shore Mountains of the Pacific Ranges in North Vancouver exceeding 1,200 m (4,000 feet) in altitude at its peak, is the site of an Alpine ski slopes in the winter season overlooking Vancouver with four chairlifts facilitating 26 runs. We took the sky ride up the mountain then explored the views from the chalet and ... read more

Dropped RV back at 11am. We got a good refund for the fridge breaking down..in fact a $300 refund! $75 inconvenience credit included In the refund. Gotta love "Cruise America", they sure look after their customers. No hesitation in recommending these guys. Staff are efficient and friendly and RV's in good condition. Mileage at drop off was 2220 miles. Not bad for a 17 day road trip. Geoff Learnt how to manoeuvre that 30 footer so well! He could park it anywhere :) Check in with Air Canada went smooth. Must say we were quite impressed with this airline. Good size seats, modern aircraft andvery efficient staff. Once we arrived in Vancouver we got a taxi to our hotel in east Vancouver. It was a 30 minute taxi ride $50. The Ramada hotel is fine for ... read more

Arrived in Anchorage late last night. Had difficulty finding a free camp in town...we were real tired so we ended up parking next to some parked trucks outside of Sams Club. Our usual "in town" spots all had large signs saying overnight parking not allowed and vehicles would be towed away. Spent the morning packing our bags for our Canadian flight tomorrow. It's a sad feeling to be leaving this beautiful place but we are also excited about our next destination - Canada. Visited the Alaska Zoo today. $12 admission per adult and we used our toursaver coupon here. The zoo is close to downtown Anchorage and the exhibits were mostly from North America. The zoo was in a forested area, plenty of shade and room to move for all the captive animals. Our favourite today ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Portage September 8th 2013

Rain fell heavily during the night but come morning there was just a drizzle of rain and the sun was peaking out from behind the clouds. We took a couple of short hikes around our camp area still admiring the closeness of the surrounding glaciers and the sparkling colour of the water. Visited the Begich and Boggs visitors centre named after 2 United States House of Representatives leaders who disappeared on an airplane en route to Juneau. No trace of the men or the aircraft was ever found. From here we drove out to the Whittier Tunnel where we needed to be ready to go through this amazing 1 lane tunnel at 10.30am. The Anton Anderson Memorial tunnel is a 2.5 mile World War II era railroad tunnel which was transformed into the longest vehicle railroad ... read more

Drove out to the historic town of Hope this morning. It was a nice leisurely drive and the town of Hope was small and quaint. Took quite a few photos of the town as we drove through. On the way back to the highway a large black bear crossed the road in front of us but we were too late to grab any photos. Just goes to show how the wildlife will pop up when you least expect it to. Next we did a tour of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Centre along the Seward Highway at Portage. Admission was $12.50 Andie were able to use another toursaver coupon. This is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to preserving Alaska's wildlife. Some of the animals at the centre are unable to be released back into the wild as they ... read more

We decided to take a different route from North Pole to Anchorage. Driving along the Richardson Highway we drove past the Aleyska Pipeline through Delta Junction and then to Paxson. For 35 years, Alyeska has operated the 800-mile Trans Alaska Pipeline System (TAPS), safely moving oil from Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope of Alaska south to the Port of Valdez, the northernmost ice-free port in the United States. The pipeline traverses three mountain ranges, permafrost regions and 34 major rivers and streams. Alyeska personnel work in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Valdez and at pump stations and response facilities along the way.
