North America October 25th 2013

Started the day off with some window shopping at the local mall - Manhattan Mall - a couple of blocks from the hostel and right next to the subway station. We saw a few items in Macy's but decided to go back and make our purchases after our sightseeing was finished - that turned out to be a mistake - more about that later. Chinatown was our next destination. We met our tour guide Meredith at Canal Street for a food tour of Chinatown. About 10 or so others joined us for the tour. The places we ate during today's tour were: Tasty dumpling - delicious deep fried pork and chive dumplings 5 for$ 1.25. This tiny place was packed with people..the building would certainly never meet standards In Australia but hey the food was excellent. ... read more

Another huge day in the city of New York. This morning we took the train W110th Street to the Cathedral Parkway. We first stopped by at the Children's Sculpture Garden where animals of freedom have been sculptured by child artists ranging from kindergarden through to high school. Each year since 1985, 12 sculptures are chosen through a Public competition and placed around the ring of freedom. Next to the garden (between W110th and 113th streets) is the home of the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine. Built in 1892, it claims to be one of the two largest Cathedrals in the world (the other one being in Liverpool). Designed as a Basilica, it was built in Gothic style and there are many stained glass windows throughout the Cathedral. There are numerous paid tours you can take ... read more

We both slept in this morning - the alarm went off at 5am as we had plans to go into Times Square to watch Good Morning America being filmed but we just couldn't get up - sometimes you just need to sleep in. We slept in till 9am and didn't leave the hostel until 11am but we still ended up with 8.5 hour touring day. Caught the train to 161st street to the Yankees stadium. On the train we could see the condition of the stations change past Central Park 110th Street. Once we arrived at 161st we were walking towards the exit when we spotted our first NY rat! There it was running madly past us in the middle of the day! The guy walking beside us said "don't worry lady you will see them ... read more

Well we did the American Football experience last night. Caught the New Jersey train to Meadowlands $11 return leaving from Penn Street station. This station is so huge if you take one wrong turn you will be lost for half a day (well it feels like that anyway). The game was good but the audience participation is even more entertaining. Lots of fun just watching the crowds. Time we arrived home it was nearing 1am - strangely it felt very safe walking the streets at this time of night. We did pass by a number of people sleeping on the streets - they were sound asleep laying on the footpath on cardboard for a bed - some had blankets - others didn't. Once again we couldn't help thinking how this could happen in America - but ... read more

The highline was the highlight of Todays exploring in New York...This was a short walking day (only 7 hours and 2 train rides). The High Line is a public park built on a 1.45-mile-long elevated rail structure running from Gansevoort Street to West 34th Street on Manhattan's West Side. The park was opened in 2009 and is still under construction. Much of the first section of the High Line is located in the Meatpacking District. Around 1900, the district was home to more than 250 slaughterhouses and meatpacking plants. Before the High Line was built, trains on street level, as well as barges and ships from the Hudson River, brought goods to the district for processing. When the High Line was built, it carried freight trains full of meat and other goods directly to the upper ... read more

Spent time chatting to one of the employees here at the hostel - she is from The Ukraine and is studying English at university here in NYC - has been here for two and a half years and loves it here although she misses her family and friends back home. All the girls that are working here are friendly and very professional. Staff are on site here from 8am until 10pm everyday and there is an emergency phone number left with guests for after hours if needed. Once agaiN I must comment on how great this place is - feel so lucky to have found this ideal place in the heart of NYC. After leaving the hostel we headed to the train to 59th street and then got onto the Roosevelt Island Tramway - this great ... read more

Started the day working out the subway - purchased a 7 day unlimited pass - that was the easy bit. Took us a bit of time to work out which trains to use but we made it through the day and tomorrow will be easier - well fingers crossed! Made it down to the New York piers on the Hudson River and stood in line to purchase our tickets at the intrepid Musesm on Pier 86. Waited 45 minutes in line just to get the tickets - makes no sense but the was only 3 ticket booths open - and it's a Saturday - the place is packed. Note to self - next time buy tickets online! The intrepid aircraft carrier is a national historic landmark and has served in tours of duty in world war ... read more

Our flight to New York leaves just after lunch...so we took our time to pack and repack and pack again! Such fun - not! It's that one part of a holiday that everyone despises! Rental car had to be dropped off at the National depot at Montreal Airport - all went smoothly there. Then check in and customs - takes so long o do the process - deep sigh of relief when you finally pass through all security Customs. Checked in 3 bags $90 - flying with Air Canada - we had heaps of cabin baggage with us - no problems getting through with it all...had a snack at burger king (it was either that or pay for airline food both equally as nasty). Flight to NYC was less than 1.5 hours. It was an amazing ... read more

Had a lazy start to the day - Geoff said he couldn't get his legs moving...I didn't want to admit it but I felt the same. We had our complementary breakfast at the hotel - the breakfast room was down in the basement of the hotel. It's a strange feeling being down in the basements in some of these places. It's something we are not used to in Australia. The hotel has many hallways, ramps and steps that lead all over the place. I can't tell you how many times we got lost when we were looking for the laundry. It was ridiculous - we had to ask the receptionist several times for directions....well our excuse is that laundry in French is not spelt anything like it is in English. Buanderie - who would guess that ... read more

Left Quebec City before 7am this morning - with a destination of Vermont USA being where we were heading for a day trip. Vermont was a destination we wanted to visit for 2 reasons. The first was to see the fall foliage - Vermont is number 1 in the USA to see fall at its best. The second reason was to visit the famous "Ben & Jerry's" factory in Waterbury Vermont. The drive from Quebec City to the USA border was uneventful - a good easy drive but not much in the way of scenery. Crossing over the border was no drama just a 15 minute wait as only one custom officer working at the station. After crossing the Vermont border the colours along the highway were amazing so we thought we were going to be ... read more
