Hi All,

Over the next 2 weeks i will be riding a bike 800km through Thailand..

Here is my blog!

About Hands
Hands Across the Water is Australia’s fastest growing boutique charity supporting the children in Thailand who were orphaned by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. Hands is currently shaking up the charity sector having raised over $2 million (AUD) without spending one cent of donor’s money on administrative costs since its inception four years ago. All costs that are incurred in the running of the charity are absorbed by Peter and other Board members. This is a unique position in the charity sector right now. Our Mission is to provide the children and those in need of Kao Lak – Thailand, with a caring and educational environment; allowing them to learn and expand their opportunities, empowering them to unite with the community. Hands is small, but doing amazing work. There is complete transparency in everything we do, and those supporting the work with the children can actually see the difference we are making – we are involved in their lives. It has now been almost five years since the Tsunami and what Hands has discovered is that the fight for normality in the lives of these children is only just beginning!

After seeing the work that this man selflessly did, and the effect his presentation had on myself and the other 450 people in the audience, I went to visit the orphanage along with some of my work colleagues the next day.

Hands has created a place that is very, very cool. It is clean, homely and a joy to visit. The children are happy, welcoming and the most beautiful kids I have had the pleasure to spend time with.

A simple hug or the chance to show us their beds and surround made their day.

Every year Peter organises an 800km bike ride from Bangkok to Khao Lak (where the orphanage is located) in 8 days. In January 2011 I have decided to be part of this great challenge

I am calling for sponsorship and donations, please have a look at the website www.handsacrossthewater.com.au and if you would like to sponsor me http://handsacrossthewater.com.au/node/257 and click on my name... Every little bit counts. I committed to this ride on Tuesday and thanks to the generosity of my fabulous colleagues my total is already $8000, my goal is $20,000.

Any questions please feel free to give me a call or send me an email. This is something I feel very passionate about and I intend to support this charity for as long as I can. I will also be donating 50% of my Auctioneering income and doing some fundraising events over the next couple of months.

But for now, the hard training regime and fundraising efforts begin....

Thanks for taking the time to have a read of this, I look forward to sharing my progress with you all.

CARNAGE! That's right, i woke up for breakfast pumped for the last day of the ride... and in true Carnage style i fell down the steps and rolled my ankle.... Greg, our neighbour at the resort, came screaming out of his room to see what had happened and replied with "Bec's are you ok, stay there i'll get my camera" couldn't believe it! Before we got on the bikes Pete addressed us, again an inspirational pep talk... then we played the national anthem and Greg showed us the most incredible Haka.. it sent chills up my spine. So after a few tears and some ice, i tried to get on my bike to see if riding was easier than walking... Unfortunately it wasn't, i couldn't put any pressure on my foot at that point. I was ... read more

This morning again greeted us with some rain, before we set off today, Pete got us all to huddle in a circle and explained that today was going to be our toughest! He told a story about a 17 year old boy who lives at Yasathon who has HIV, he writes songs, and every song he writes is for his fallen brothers and sisters at the orphanage, the sad thing is that he writes these stories as he is digging their graves. As we all looked at each other with tears in our eyes, Pete told us to use his story as inspiration to finish the touh day ahead, and know that we are all helping people like him.... We set out on our bikes a little sombre, due to the rain, Petes message, and the ... read more

Day 5 greeted us with sunny skies and a nice ride out of the beach. The day was hilly and windy but i felt stronger than i ever have on the bike. Cruising at around 28kms per hour and taking the hills on one at a time! They say that at some point on the ride everyone hits their potential, yesterday was my day! Some good tunes in my ears, some fantastic riding partners.... special mentions go to Jason for some great conversing which made the water stops come up quicker.... Amy, who struggled through some of the steeper ones with me! Go Aims! My roomie, a cop from Kings Cross is powering along and we are enjoying early nights together as we both seem to fall asleep at dinner! Mitch is now known as Ghandi ... read more

Whoa o we are halfway there, whoa o living on a prayer! We reached the halfway mark... Day 4 of riding...OMG we climbed about 34 hills today... They kept telling us it would be our toughest.. We set off this morning a little unsure about the day ahead... Our first leg was flat along the coast line which lulled us in to a false sense of security that they were having us on... 20km leg Second leg saw us climb 40m above sea level and again we all felt good, alot of this was on the highway.... 25km lef The third leg is where it all went wrong.... we climbed a further 100m above sea level and by this time th sun was belting down... I turned to my iPod again to get me through.. My ... read more

Woo hoo a short day in comparison to the rest! Today we were rewarded for all of our hard work yesterday... An early roll off saw us following the coast line for about 5kms... We stopped and fed the monkeys, they are so adorable and eat straight out of your hand. We then continued our ride through the airforce base and back onto the coast. We made a left turn and headed back to the dreaded highway! I really hate the highway! Larry from Sydney rode the leg with me and we managed the 13kms without any accidents. There have been a few punctures to date but again the haven't been on my bike. Today also saw my roomie have her first fall but she is ok! We pushed through and went off road for about ... read more

Well hello legs... Today was always going to be tough. The day saw us travel through some quaint little towns, catch a ride on a boat, and get through the first hills. Toughest part of today was a 23km stretch on the highway with trucks and cars passing us at around 140km per hour! And for those of you who have been to Thailand you know that the Thai's don't particularly pay attention to the road rules! I had my first crash today... and yes Brook it was when i had pulled up and forgot to unclip... However, SAndra another girl on the ride had 2 about 20mins so it's not full Carnage for me.. :) A milestone day for a lot of us who had not ridden 100km in one day, so at the top ... read more

Day 3 - First day riding... Last night was our first introduction to the riders. What a great bunch of people. We went for a tour around The Bangkok Slums where a charity that Peter works quite close to is doing some work. What and amazing effort these people are putting in to ensure the children in the slum also get an educations. We were greeted by some beautiful Thai Girls dressed in all their glory. After an amazing dinner and some Thai dancing it was back on the bus where were presented with our riding Jerseys. This morning we were up and out of the hotel in Bangkok at 7am, an hour and a half bus ride out of the city to our bikes. We were briefed about the road safety, animal safety and injury ... read more

Last Night was spent at a seafood market.... Possibly the best seafood i have ever had. You start by going shopping with your host and choosing your catch, vegies and Fruit, then it's back to your table and telling your host how you would like it cooked... . BEAUTIFUL... Spent the day again with Tony & Pat who are slowly starting to sound like each other, same mannerism etc... Very Very entertaining. My roomie came in last night while i was asleep, she is about 24 and she is a cop in Kings Cross, she hasn't done much bike time and i think she is relying on her youth and the fact her 60 year old father finished the ride last year... she is a very brave girl as she did not bring her seat with ... read more

Day 1 Bangkok - Spent the day with "The Gaylords", well that is what they are calling each other. Two very funny guys from Perth who have kept me largely entertained all day. We decided to buy a sky rail pass and see what we could find in this huge city. The boys have done a fair bit of traveling together and refer to themselves as the "Where the F*$k are we" Tribe... Meaning they tend to get lost a little... And they made me an honorary member today... As we set off with no destination in mind, we found ourselves in downtown Bangers enjoying the sights, sounds and smells that only Asia has to offer... After little bit of shopping and a whole lot of walking, we decided that maybe we should rest our legs ... read more

Hi All, After 13 hours of traveling i made it to Bangkok... Spent the night last night with 2 riders from Perth, Pat & Tony checking out local bars and experiencing what this great city has to offer. Just about to meet them for Breaky and then go exploring! Just a short entry today as the real stuff doesn't start until tomorrow. I hope you are all well back at home. Cheers Bec... read more
