So we had some good news today. They called the locksmith and since we are in the middle of nowhere I have no idea how much this will cost to bring him down in this remote place to break the hotel safe because they vault key is lost during one of the surf sessions. Passport and all money is in the vault so this potentially can be bad. 4 hours later after a long hike I get back to receive some good news that they where able to get into the safe so a ding of $50. Good times, so it{s off to a nice restaurant tonight to celebrate. The next day was pretty chill. Morning swim and maybe abit of rum and then hiked 3 kms into Santa Elena which is more happening then Mal ... read more

On Saturaday morning I ended up taking the local bus by accident. Apparently there is one bus for most of the tourist and then the other local bus for people to get to work. I thought it was odd that I was the only gringo on the bus. Nevertheless it was an adventure getting to Puntarenas to get to the Ferry. But because this was a regular bus I overshot my stop an entire half island and had to make my way back to the Ferry. The bus ride took 2.5 hours and cost $2 bucks which was sweet. Ferry takes 1.5 hours to Tambor which is basically a port to get to the real destination of Mal Pais. Getting to Mal Pais is tough because you have to basically take 4 buses and 1 ferry ... read more

They say it takes about a week before you break out of your comfort zone and really get into your trip and they are right. I have to say I have not stayed at a funkier hostel then the Tranquilo backpackers hostel. This place is probably the best hostel I had ever stayed at. The vibe is just off the charts. I arrived from Caribe bus station and made my way here. The hostel use to be an old mansion but now they are all little dorm rooms. This place is like spring break meets bob marley meets jack johnson. It{s just so chill and the people here are so interesting. I met Keenen and Rob both from Winnipeg and we played Uno downstairs in one of the chill room and the two bottles of rum ... read more

So I finally met up with Marianne and John and out of no where a full on marching band was in formation on the intersection. I guess it must of been some sort of school organized event because there were 20 to 30 something kids and a conductor leading them down the street. It was pretty fun watching the little kids dance to the local music. Soon after we went over to the bus station and paid the driver $8 for a 6 hour trip to San Jose. The bus ride was uneventful except when we got stopped by the policia and they were searching through bags and checking passports. We all go out of the bus and waited to be search and it hit me I was carrying a bottle of rum. I wasn't sure ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Limón » Cahuita October 3rd 2008

I can never get use to these international keyboard to get the correct symbols. So if you start seeing weird characters when I type it{s not because I am drunk or stoned. It{s been 3 days in Cahuita and this is probably my favorite place in the east side. In the morning I met Tia an Australian girl who works for the UN in New York in the land mine division. It was very interesting chatting to her about her work sitting on the hammock and enjoying the Caribbean coast. Our hostel called Spencer Sea side is practically right on the beach so you can watch the sunset and listen to the wave crashing against the walls while you sleep or read. The town is very easy to navigate and explore. On my way to Cahuita ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Limón » Cahuita October 2nd 2008

The first stop was to Tamarindo which is pretty touristy. The surfing is good but the town is abit too developed for my liking. Any town with a pizza hut and subway fails the benchmark and you can expect pretty heavy prices for food and board. I would say on average meals here cost $8 and board $30 or $15 if you can find a roomate. The town is still in development but it will only get worse as more malls and expats move in. I would describe Tam between a less developed resort but almost at resort prices. You can easily find $80 to $149 rooms here. We ended up staying here for 3 days and wanted to go to Mal Pais further down but heard the roads were too bad for buses so instead ... read more

Wow it's been 4 years since my last trip. Almost forgot my password to this site. Well this blog will be a few days jammed into one. I left for Costa Rica on Sept 25th and had 2 lay overs. There's not really any direct flight to CR so I would recommend limitting your layovers. When I first purchase my ticket I thought 2 lay overs including 3 hours at each airport wouldn't be bad but until you do the time it sucks. The first layover was into Salt Lake City which I flew Delta. I don't know about the other airlines but Delta was pretty disorganized. I came very close to missing my flight because they were overbooked.I asked the lady what was going on and like a veteran she told me to look at ... read more

Okay so I forgot I had a 12 hour lay over in Seol and I'm sitting here and got another 5 hour to burn. After that last entry I wrote last night, everything went to the shitters. Good news is I got my CD but then I am completely shiet face trying to get myself into the taxi cab. I must of totally forgotten how strong these Mojito's were, after 10 in a row I am so trashed, I puked in the cab. I am screwed, there is no way I can make it into the Bangkok airport, so I pay the cab driver and tip him 300 baut which was probably the deciding factor that got me onto the plane. He starts unloading all my stuff onto the trolley for me and I can barely ... read more

You probobably don't want to read this becuase it's writtten in the context of me zenning out.  I will try to capture tot you the last few hours of how I have felt in Thailand.  HOnestly I have probabably lost all credibility b/c i am so shit face but we'll back up the truck before I had 10 mojito's.  So I woke up and sent my  swords back home, it'll be 2 months before I recieve those bad boys.  The day would come to be some major foreshadowing as I have met the first asian girl I am actually  infactuated with.  As I stand in the line up at the thai post office, I notice a rare beauty that spoke with an english accent.  Ent you are right, there is nothing like accents, this girl just ... read more

Well it has been one hell of a trip - I leave tmr at 10PM back to the mother land.  The 1st night in Koh San was a blur but I have to admit, I'm having a blast the last 3 days here in Bangkok.  Maybe it's b/c I am so carefree with no time table to worry about knowing I'm leavign in 3 days and just splurging. Speaking of splurging, I am on Koh San and I walked by this massage/healing/aromatherapy joint and basically went for the Platnium package.  I must of spent 3 hours in there getting every square inch of my body attended to.  I am such a huge bietch today, afterwards I am walking down Koh San smelling like a bed of flowers and feeling like a million bucks.  Okay it's the ... read more
