Macau is a fascinating place. I wonder how it was before China had taken it over. It's very clean and very developed. But do not kid yourself because you are still in Asia. Once the ferry docks you have several hundred asian people flying out of the gates like a kamazee horse. It was madness but after 1.5 hours we got through customs. Customs was very chill, no frills. No need to take a taxi because there are shuttles to take you to the hotels. They don't check to see if you have a reservation so you can really hop on any shuttle bus for a free ride. Macau is similar to Vegas but not quite. The buildings are big but vegas is a lot bigger and more sinful. You only need 2 days in Macau, ... read more

It felt nice heading to the airport again. It's been a year since my last trip which was in India and 4 years since my last blog. As usually packing was done last minute but this time it was in style. I guess as you progress in life with age you tend to enjoy the finer things in life. 10 years ago I would of been scrambling to pawn off personal items to met budget but this time around I went for a massage and had lobster for dinner before heading to the airport. The flight was with Cathay Pacific which in my opinion is one of the best Airline to travel with. If you fly around the holdays it's about $900 more so I went on new years. International airport security in Canada was quite ... read more

Friday morning - today would be my last day to surf. It rained last night so it looks like the death star is back in action. The little bastards are getting smarter and braver and nailing me in the most awkward places. A bite between the knuckle and behind the knee, probably the itchest possible body part they can get at. The weather is looking pretty good with some overcast and off shore wind. Again we head to Playa Ramonso. The waves were pretty good but the surf was rough. I have surfed 4 days in a row and have developed a board rash from the board and not wearing a rash guard. So paddling was painful and when you take away the ability to paddle you are at the mercy of the wave. I had ... read more

Last night I treated myself to a killer meal. To cap off an awesome day of surfing I dropped $20 at this beach side restuarant. It was perfect listen to the wave crash and watching the lighting storm in the horizon. Now back home $20 may get you an entree and maybe one drink. Here in Nicaragua it will get you - Shrimp Cerviche - 2 pina colada - 1 whole fish fish in white sauce and a bunch of shrimp - salad - soup I spoke to some expats and they were saying that the average pay here is $2 for a day for 80% of the population but yet people here all have cell phones. I guess it is a status symbol he was explaining. People here would rather purchae a small TV then ... read more

It is good to be back in Suan Juan De Sur. It is odd returning to a place yet at the same time it is comforting. Still I always seem to get lost in this village. It must be the fung shui messing with me. So I checked into the Xamily hostel and went for a walk. As I was walking down to the market to buy some surf wax, I almost bailed and slid a few feet almost into a pole. Turns out I just stepped on a giant pile of dog pooh. This mound was unbelievable big and I am suprise these scawny dogs can make such a thing. My forensics skills determine this to be some pretty fresh poop and the culprit probably did not get very far judging by the freshness of ... read more

Granada was very much needed. Whatever bug I had I feel much better. The evening was uneventful because I spent most of the night trying to fix my camera. It somehow got a virus on my memory card which prevented me from seeing any photos. Yup that is right you can get your memory card infected with a virus but then again maybe it´s just Nicaragua. None of these computers have virus scans so I feel like I should be putting a condom on my USB cord when I plug it into one of these computers. So with some nifty computer work I showed the virus who was boss and restored it. That night I stayed at a hostel call Oasis in Granada. This hostel had a lot of amenities but the room were basic and ... read more

Today was abit of a write off. We took a day trip into the coastal area to the beaches of Las Penitas in a chicken bus. These chicken buses are of the worst shape you can possibly imagine yet they somehow make it work and jam a bunch of people in along with bags, groceries and farm animal. The ride cost only .50 cent but you get what you pay for. When we finally got going after 3 hours of waiting because of the storm the night before, we got to the bridge and it was flooded. The water had reached passed the bridge so now the bridge had about a foot of water on it. Everyone was anxious to get across and I don't even think the bus driver gaveit a second thought and went ... read more

This morning I was abit hungover from last night. We were suppose to wake up to hike up to the Volcano but I ended up vegging and licking my wounds until noon. Most of the day I wondered around Leon and explored the old cathedrals and it was fantastic. The rain finally let up so I was able to get some photos in. I sat at cathedral square which was a great place to people watch. Afterwards I met up with Thomas who was also hungover and we made our way to the meeting point to head up to the volcano. The ride up was cramped int a 4x4 and the road was pretty bad from the rain. Twice we always got stuck and a few times we had to stop for cows and pigs crossing. ... read more

So last night I moved out of my other hostel and into the center of Leon. There are two main hostels here - Via Via and Big Foot and they are literally across the street from each other. These are pretty much the hostels to stay at if you are in Leon. Most people stay at one and then hang out at the other and vice versa. The first night I hung out at Big Foot and was chilling with the owner who use to be a pro surfer but now he said he was too old so he bought the Big Foot hostal and just enjoys running it. Thomas and I were having $1 mojitos all night and we met this girl who originally lived in the states but now teaches in Granada for the ... read more
