I got to bed pretty early last night - booze will do that to you. It was quite odd sleeping in a room with no windows so when the light was off it was pitch black. During the night I woke up to use the lu and I smoked my head on the shower curtain and ended up causing a big ruckus. The owner knocked on the door to make sure I was okay and the one time I do have my spanish book I had no light. I replied back to him in broken spanish I was okay. I probably ended up telling him I was shaving my bum or something ridiculous knowing how bad my spanish was. I woke up quite early to catch the 5 am out of San Juan to Managua which ... read more

I woke up this morning and unlike back home, instead of checking the stock market I check how many new mosquito bites I have. I thought I had fortified my bed with a mosquito net but still managed to receive 5 new ones. Damn why can´t my stocks perform as consistent as these mosquito bites. It was a rough sleep last night. I was partying with the 3 guys from El Savatore and called it an early night but they kept going. In the morning I was woken up by a combination of roosters, dogs and a very annoying car alarm. It must be a local with his first car alarm because he had set it to the most annoying setting. It pretty much rang everytime someone bumped it or farted, and it wasn´t a short ... read more

I woke up today to the sounds of roosters that would not stop. I looked at my watch and it´s 6am. Time stands still and at times completely forgotten when you travel. So I hit the shower and the water pressure is non existence. The shower head was defective so the only water pressure was spraying against the side of the wall and not straight so I had to hump the wall and balance myself to get the soap off. You gotta love these $5 rooms. So far I have gone from spending $20 a night traveling the first 2 weeks with friends from Vancouver to hitting $5 places with other traveling mates that are on a budget because they are traveling for a year. As a result I got bitten 15 times the first night ... read more

Last night I ended up counting up all my Colones in change and wanted to spend it all before leaving for Nicaragua in the morning. It was happy hours and the bartender was my new best friend. I must of unloaded a ton of change on him and he was quite happy because he needed for the night. 6 drinks later and it was time for bed. I got too drunk and had to bail on the Volcano tour which I heard was boring to do on La Fatuna. Everyone tells me to do it in Nica because you actually get to hike up there. In the morning I met up with Charlotte and Natalie to catch the 6am bus to Nica. We ended up taking the local bus so it was a pretty hardcore ride ... read more

So I left Monteverde at 2PM and we gunned it down the mountain like a bat out of hell down the super sketchie roads at top speed. I made the mistakes of falling alseep and my head ended up hitting the roof of the car and almost knocked myself out back to sleep. Who needs Melatonin when you can whip down a mountain. After an hour of being shell shocked and the occastionally stop to let cows cross, we reached the base of the mountain and I had to get off. I was so out of it I left my camera in the car so while I was waiting for further instructions, another travellor getting into the 4x4 found a camera and asked who it belonged to. I look at it and I was thinking gee ... read more

Well it´s too hot to wait outside so I thought I blog abit and zen out and maybe give some of my No Planets Just lonely Dan tips. If you are planning on coming to CR bring money. CR has developed into a big tourist hotspot and probably the most expensive country in Central America. Average price for food is $6-$8 and that is just simple stuff now dining out. Most activities range from $40 average and up. And grocery is not that much cheaper when you try to buy can tuna it´s pretty much the same as home. It is a great place to come if your spanish sucks and if this is your first trip to Central America because it is probably alot easier to travel then other places without knowing any Spanish. Last night after the coffee tour I met up with Thomas from Holland and we had a few drinks at the Tree house restuarant. Some how they build this place around a massive tree and the restuarant sits up on the tree like a tree house. Very cool but also very expensive. Drinks were about $5 but they were good. I got the Mojito but then saw the Tree house mojito which they basically make it into a pretty lavish drink. We met these 6 girls from England and they were travelling up to Nica and Thomas had only good things to say about it too so I am convince my next stop will be to Nicaragua. One of the girls called Charlotte Bradshaw (sounds like sex in the city chica) wanted to have her birthday ... read more

This morning I woke up at 6am for a brisk hike into the cloud forest. The cloud forest is a protected area and it has a pretty good trail with or without a guide. I would recommend the guide because he can show you things you would not be able to find. The cost was $30 and Johnny our guide was very good. He was able to mimic all the bird and animal sounds so they would respond back. There´s a few trails here you can do so I would do the one in Santa Elena with a guide and the other ones without. You just need to pay for the entrance fee which goes back to the trail - $15. The hike took 3.5 hours and afterwards I stopped by at a local taco stall ... read more

I left Puntarenas at 2pm on another local bus. The bus ride cost $2 bucks. My number system in spanish is still very new so most of the time when I am unsure how much something cost I give them a bigger bill but then this equals more change. Costa Rica change is heavy so I think I will need to practice my numbers or I am going to have to either hit the slots or carry a big mountain coop change purse. Catching the bus can be difficult because even though the sign tells you the bus stops here it can sometimes be half a block away. Again I am the only gringo on the bus. Travelling by bus is fun but at times you have no idea where you are going. Before the bus ... read more

Woke up at 5 am to catch the 6am bus out of Mal Pais and into Cabano. There I would take another bus to Tambor and to the ferry station. The ferry takes 1.5 hours but the entire trip just to get to the ferry is about 3 hours. The roads are sometimes so bad you need a 4x4 but we were lucky even with such heavy rain last night the bus made it out of Mal Pais. I arrived at the port of Puntarenas which is a transitional town. I waited at the local bus stop and the firework began. I ordered some vendor food from this lady and she didn´t have change. My spanish is getting abit better or maybe it´s an improved mind reading ability and reading body language but she basically motion ... read more
