I am writing this in the newly remodeled Phnom Penh airport in Cambodia’s capital city, and I have to say I have never seen an airport that is less representative of the city in which it was built. This airport, which was looted and destroyed in the coup just a few years ago, is now nicer and more modern than most airports in the States. As I sit here in big, comfy lounge chairs drinking a $2USD bottle water (which I would have paid 20 cents for just across the street from a woman on the corner) and a $4 Panini (about the price of a steak down the road), I am watching big Philips plasma televisions broadcasting tourist sites around the country. The marble floors in the bookstore must have cost more to put in ... read more

Hey everyone! Well... last night we decided to check out the nightlife here, we went to this strip of bars which included the viking bar, and the green mango club. Although the green mango doesn't get going until like 12am(ish) So we met a few nice australian boys, and danced a lot. We ended up walking home at like 3:00am(ish) and lucky for us mcshits was still open so we hit that up for a burger and fries... and went to bed when we got home. This morning we don't feel so hot but it's all good, tonight we are headed to the black moon party, should be interesting. Anyway this was a very short entry but i have some pictures from last night so i thought i would write a little something with the pictures. ... read more

Asia » Japan March 29th 2006

After my last entry, I spent my last evening at J-Hoppers just chatting with some other people who were staying at the hostel; Harmony and Tiffany from Boston, Dave from Australia, Perine from Germany, Matt from Australia and Yuko from Japan. Later that night I met a couple of other girls, one from Taiwan whose name I can't remember, Judy from Malaysia and Jessica from Singapore, all very nice and we ended up chatting until 2am. Tuesday morning I awoke to the sound of snoring coming from one of the girls in the room (mixed dorm accomodations). So I got up, got showered, did some laundry and tried to find a place to crash for the next two nights. I ended up going up into the mountains in Koyasan which is where all the monks and ... read more

Finally some cooler weather! In Da Lat we even had to drag out the jumpers as we wandered past the lake and mini Eiffel Tower in the evening. Lonely Planet described Da Lat as very kitsch and they weren't kidding. We hired motorcycle guides and zoomed our way around the city and beyond, seeing all sorts of tacky sights and stunning vistas in between. There was one awesome pagoda (the Linh Phouc I think) where giant dragon sculptures were made from pieces of beer bottles and decorated with mosaics of broken crockery. The views from the top weren't too shabby there eithere. The strawberry shakes and lollies were great (so much better and more addictive that the coconut lollies), as were the vegetarian noodles from the friendly guy at the market. Sadly the over-the-top tacky, the ... read more

I hear that the early flowers in Illinois are blooming and that predictions of severe blizzards were thwarted by other nature. I do miss the heady joy that sweeps through me at the heralding of spring when I live in a climatological zone that has four distinct seasons. Having the opportunity to live in the tropics for almost a year fills me with wonder too. I’d like to describe it for you. The weather is so much more mild here. Hong Kongers cancel engagements because of a little rain or increased windiness. I want to tell them about wading through snowstorms, shuffling along upon sheets of ice, and dawning layers upon layers of clothing to guard against artic winds. So, when they complain about a little misty rain, I just smile and thank God that I ... read more

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Mumbai March 29th 2006

Well, Steph and I arrived in Mumbai after another 12 hour journey. I am really looking forward to the day when I don't have to take these overnight buses anymore. One more to Goa and we should be done. This ride was not much better then the others. Actually, I may have feared for my life more on this one because the driver was insane. He kept weaving in and out of trafic, missing transport trucks in the other lane by inches! YIKES! I can not believe the size of this City. It is absolutely huge. But, I can say one thing, it is the cleanest City that I have been to in India. And, there is no cow poop on the streets so I can actually look around as I walk instead of looking at ... read more

Back by popular demand and little to write so here's a sneak preview of my apt and it's surroundings =) Every other day or so, just outside my apt there's a market. Yeah yeah blaba so heres the market... As you can see there's a lovely train track there also which sounds like a fleet of german crazed tanks on steriods. Quite annoying. Not only this but in the next picture you can see a coca-cola joint right? Well the smallish place to the left of that is a Kareoke joint. Thai people getting drunk and thinking their whitney houston at 11:59 is also slightly annoying... Moving indoors I feel the need to show off some bargain materials... read more

I have to say thank god for my lessons on the subway with Jen in Seoul seeing's I had never been on one in my life before. The one here is much simpler only consisting of 4 lines which I easily got myself to my first destination stop with. Then searching for a hotel that no longer exists got me a little confused, but I got'er all figured out with my ever improving sign language/sherrades (sp) act. By noon I was unpacking in my not so wonderful room and opening up the guide book on what to see. Honestly though people I wouldn't by the Lonely Planet "Korea" book because most of the directions in it suck. First I though I'd take a gander over to the oh so famous fish market. So much of this city is so big and in your face. Yesterday I went in search of a cell phone at one of Bangkok’s many shopping plazas, MBK. I figured I would just roam around the place until I encountered the cell phone shops. Almost a fatal mistake. This mall has 12 stories and is packed in with shops. Luckily, the entire floor of cell phone shops was only on the fourth floor and not on the 12th! By the third floor, I was wondering where these supposed discount cell phones were that a former classmate had told me about. Ascending the escalator to the fourth floor, there it was: the Mecca to cell phones. Shop after shop selling, used, new and Lord knows what else condition cell phone was crammed onto this floor.
