The next day after coming back from Noashima, we decided to catch a Ferry across to Kobe as the ferry's from Takamatsu were much cheaper than any of the trains. With some time to kill in the morning, we first decided to check out Takamatsu's garden. I'm really glad we did as it has been my favourite garden so far. It was a lot bigger at more open than any other garden I've been to, and there are beautiful bridges and mountain backdrops. There are also masses of fish in the garden ponds who will swim up to you hoping for food. Not the best survial technique in the wild, but the kids love them. Anyway, for those who know of my legendary sea sickness I actually handled the four hour ferry pretty well. The ferry ... read more

Got up really early yesterday to go on a trip to Chongming Island. It's a large island, about 80km by 15km, at the mouth of the yangzi river. We had to get up at 5 to catch the first ferry, which was a bit of a shock because its the time we usually come in. There were six of us on the trip, me, Jerome and Pippa, the three interns and Shamus, his wife and a chinese journalist Zat. Zat was born on Chongming Island so she came along to show us around. It was about an hour's ferry ride up the Huang Po river and in to the yangzi basin. When we arrived on the island we managed to arrange for a guy with a van to drive us round for the day. First we ... read more

Asia » Japan » Shizuoka March 30th 2006

Cherry blossoms in Japan are a big deal because they only flower for a couple of weeks each year, so Amy and I went for a drive around Shizuoka to do some cherry blossom viewing! We went to a park fairly close to our house, then to Nihondaira where there was a huge park and nice views of Mt Fuji.... read more

Asia » Singapore March 30th 2006

Tis a great place to replace any lost/stolen electricals!!! You will all be glad to know that we did in fact pick up a fab new digital camera with so many functions and accessories we're gonna b reading the manual for months! So there will now be plenty more fab photos to make you all jealous :) Did a ton of shopping in Singapore - every other building is a shopping mall. Dunno how the Singaporeans can possibly need so much shopping, but im not complaining :) Everyone we've met so far in Asia has been telling us how clean and lovely Singapore is, but we were a little disappointed. We were expecting gleaming pavements and flowers everywhere!!! But instead we came accross some really stinky drains and a lot of litter in some parts. Felt ... read more

Asia » Japan » Osaka March 30th 2006

Osaka is a bit like I'd imagined Tokyo would be. It's a tangle of flyovers, buildings, subterranean malls, neon, arcades and the occasional castle. You can quite easily spend a whole day lost underground. Anyway, we tried shopping but we're pretty rubbish at it and failed to get anything despite walking down a couple of the longest shopping arcades in Japan ( each around 2.5km of covered shops all in a row ). We briefly looked at the castle ( yawn ) and we went to the waterfront where we got very scared on what they almost dare to claim is the world's largest big wheel which did provide a very good view.... read more

Asia » Japan » Kyoto March 30th 2006

After my side trip to Nara, I headed back to Kyoto to check into the Gojo guesthouse, my lodging for the next three nights. Once I got into Kyoto, I figured I'd walk to the guesthouse, but unfortunately I somehow ended up on the wrong side of town. I decided to give-up on the walking idea and grabbed the subway. Once I got off, I was positive I knew which way to go, but again, ended up going in the opposite direction of the guesthouse. And when I finally found the area, I couldn't find the actual building and ended up walking passed it two times before I noticed the small sign on the ground. So after my two-hour trek with backpack and daypack in tow, I checked-in, met a couple of my roommates, then went ... read more

Couldn't resist... what a good song! classic. Anyways... the bus ride (dun dun dun)... the one evvveryone has horror-stories about - actually wasn't as bad as we thought. After we crossed the border to Cambodia, we switched to a small bus. The road was unpaved, bumpy, and full of potholes... you couldn't read a book, or fall asleep, and it was so loud that iPods could barely tune out the motor-sounds... but it was fun! A great ride... totally okay. Our driver told us how the government has promised to fix this road since the nineties. Hasn't happened yet! But it was a GORGEOUS ride... red (not orange!) dirt roads, fields going on for miles, little stilt houses and villages at the side of the road... great lighting at the time. And we drove by so ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Anjuna Beach March 30th 2006

Hi everyone! Yes, we are still alive. And still on the beach....... I think we may be able to pull ourselves away after this weekend. It's time to head north and see the "real" India. We've been having a great time in Goa. Have been living in luxury on the beach doing a lot of nothing and hanging with great people. As a result, we haven't really been too inspired to sit at a computer for a couple hours in a non-air conditioned internet cafe with a not-too-quick internet connection. We had a fabulous time in the ancient town of Hampi. Hampi is famous for its ruins dating back to the 1400's, and for its geology. It felt like we were living in Bedrock. Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok March 30th 2006

I originally intended to spend four days on Kao Tao Island but I ended up staying ten. I spent most of that time scuba diving, all round the island were isolated reefs, each unique and teeming with life, after my open water course I felt I had not seen enough of what the island had to offer. Two of the most memorable dives were the night and deep dives which were both part of the advanced diving course. On the night dive the boat arrived at dusk & we jumped straight in, being underwater at night is a vastly different experience from diving at day, you can only see what you point your torch at & the predators all come out. Swimming all around us were Giant Barracuda which swam incredibly fast, the best game we ... read more

So, over the past couple of days, I've been taking a Photoshop course with a group of women from our expatriate group. I've learned a lot of cool tricks and have also learned that a trip to Pantip needs to be acccomplished ASAP so that I can upgrade from Photoshop 7.0 to CS. The magnetic lasso feature on CS has me very excited. Over the past few weeks, Thailand has been gripped with protests against the Prime Minister, which over the past few days has really caused some traffic problems. So, today during our class (on the 20th floor in the business district) we hear the sound of drums. We look out the window and saw a caravan of several trucks festooned with balloons, with drummers aboard and people around the caravan. So, thinking it was ... read more
