Asia » China » Yunnan » Kunming April 17th 2006

So we're in China! Hopping off the minibus in Lao Cai we decided that it was time to move on. So after a deal or two on the black market we hopped across and were in China. Immediately we could feel the difference, and not only in the street signs which all looked kinda pretty but meant relatively nothing. Straightaway people were friendlier and willing help us despite our bumbling Mandarin. We grabbed an overnight sleeper bus that night (think the Harry Potter bus gone horribly wrong) and ended up in Kunming, the capital of the Yunnan provine yesterday morning. We checked into a hostel which is super clean and has wicked showers and have spent the last two days exploring the city. It's HUGE! Everything is HUGE, the roads, the shops, the signs... it's just ... read more

(Dustin) I don't know if you have a map in front of you but you might find that Pyay and Inle Lake aren't really smooth destinations considering Bagan in the Middle. Actually we just combined these two places because we didn't have a whole lot of pictures from either and they were both more small towns so we figured it would work out easier this way. Pyay turned out to be way more fun than we originally thought it would be, sure it has temples and historic stuff and those always hold some interest for us, but the people made the place just awesome. After a night of sweating because all the power turns off at 10:30 pm and the silence and heat was pretty uncomfortable. We decided to check out another place in the morning ... read more

After a trip to the market in Causeway Bay to check that off-the-peg suits are expensive - they are - I get back to find the outside door of my apartment block is closed (as usual) and locked (as usual) but the keypad entry system is dark and doesn’t beep in the usual irritating manner when I bash some buttons to gain entry. Nonplussed, I start trying all of the four keys I was given when I moved in - none open the door, which is just below my first-floor window. It looks pretty unscaleable though, so I head around the corner to repeat the key performance in the door at the bottom of the fire escape. The door itself is locked but it’s ajar so it can’t close properly, the Chinese approach to theft prevention. ... read more

Rain here is just a big huge joke. I've literally never seen it rain here. The other day when we were at work it "rained" and someone told me it was raining outside. I looked outside and said "where? It's not raining." They looked at me like I was crazy until I explained that where I come from rain means the sky opens up and rains, not sprinkles. Here all they seem to get is sprinkles. Just now before I came home from Camillo's we saw lightning outside and Camillo looked out because he said if it was raining I'd better go home right away. He looked out and was like "Oh, my goodness, it's raining really hard! What do we do?" "I can sleep on the sofa." He started looking for a blanket then looked ... read more

Hello all my friends and family! I know I know, it has been a really long time since I last updated the travelblog! Over a month!! I am so lazy… The reason for not updating is simply that I decided to more or less stay in Langkawi for the rest of my “vacation”. As you probably figured out - I am alone here without travel company, which actually is all right since I’m used to do all my travels alone! Although.. I’m not so much alone ;) I have been sick a lot with exciting infections in my throat, I had the flu (from Cambodia) for weeks, my back broke down, stomach problems.. you name it! I am okay for now; at least I can eat somewhat normal! I want to mention that it is not ... read more

We just stumbled back into town after 12 hours on the lowest class bus in India. The Himalayas are young and sedimentary so landslides are frequent and road work is never finished. Our bus bounced over huge fallen rocks, inches from the 1000 foot crumbling edge with no guard rail. Overflowing with people we screech brakes around thin corners with full size busses squeezing between us and the mountain. On the other side a mile down is a river. Nothing between us and death. Most women are puking, Melissa falls asleep to the bouncing, and I stay sane by imaging myself jumping through the tiny window and grabbing a small tree when we inevitably drive off the cliff. My nerves are tight and my stomach turns the whole way. The bus slows only for fresh landslides ... read more

How is life? I am well. Doing great. Yes... Wow. My time of about a month is coming to an end here in Thailand. I am still amazed how time does fly by. Unreal. I have come full circle. I made my way in a large arc through the northlands of Thailand. It was good and i learned much. The hill tribe peoples, thais, and refugees from Burma were all fascinating. Very poor by western standards but such things matter not to most of the people. They are far more wealthy than most people i see walking the streets in my country. They are so warm and kind and will welcome you into their homes and give what they have. I in turn give what i have. It was good. I did hear of a province ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Trang April 16th 2006

we stayed an extra day in krabi town after phi phi island to wait for matt and claire who had been off taming cobras in khao sok national park and snorkeling and living for free on the similan islands. after 2 months deliberating whether or not to spend the money on a camera, dave decided it was time to stop messing around, and after getting a good deal from one of the camera shops in town, a shiny fuji was purchased, should keep him quiet for a few days! the ride to trang was less eventful than most bus journeys, only a couple of incidents were present that caused fear for our lives and we arrived safe and sound in the northern bus terminal and walked the 1km route to the minibus station to take us ... read more

I swear, being in this country is like being on constant PMS...LOL The reason why I say this is because one day you love it and the other you just can't take it anymore. Nothing too harsh, but the mixed emotions this place gives you. Don't get me wrong, I think I love this country because of it's culture and differences and adventures, but it just really gets to you. It almost sucks you in, you either never wanna leave and just want to see every corner of it, but on the other hand at some points it's just too much to take in. Like I said, I was on the beaches of Goa for about 2 weeks which really doesn't have the feel of India because of it's high amounts of tourists, but still pretty ... read more
