Whether China is Buddhish, Taoist or Confucian, it’s Easter Sunday and I’m 6000 miles from home, alone, eating a complimentary Easter bunny in a five-star hotel room and watching traffic. It’s surprisingly stressful surveying the scene as suicidal scooters weave between coaches and taxis and the occasional roar of a Ferrari V8 splits the air - what do I do if I see an accident? Ignore it, or go and explain in Portuguese that the whole thing was laid out in plan view for me and I still have no idea who was at fault? I give up and watch the concrete mountain of Fisherman’s Wharf belch flame (and particulate - not even Gordon Brown has worked out how to tax artificial volcanoes yet). The financial background of the city is impressive too - the latest ... read more

So, Sunday has come, and the thought of giving up the room already feels like a small defeat. We still do have some time left in town before flying back to Bangkok, which we want to spend to meet some gastronomical goals. Kay is longing for steamed chicken feet and I simply need another cup of masala tea. And there you have the day's itinerary in one sentence; Chinatown and Little India, unsurprisingly, some of our absolute favourite places to be. Kay's desire to seek out new experiences brings us around the block in Chinatown searching for more cantonese restaurants until finally ending up at the Tak Po after all, and the chicken feet (and my char siew buns) are just as excellent today as well. After lunch we head over to Little India again, taking ... read more

It wasn't until we got to Beijing that we realised how accustomed to India we had become. As more people mentioned the dirt, the noise, the pollution….(what dirt - you could eat of the floor here, noise? we can’t hear a thing), we began remember what it was like to be in a clean country. I think seeing Starbucks as soon we came into arrivals clinched it for us. This Aussie guy attached himself to us, so we went to Starbucks to chill for a while, soak in the Chinese atmosphere!! Eventually we left the safety of Starbucks and got a taxi to Leo's - the Aussie dude also decided to stay in Leos - why not?! It’s not extremely easy to navigate taxis in China - unlike the Indians who want to rip you off, ... read more

It's around the middle of April and the weather is finally consistently warm enough to say that spring is really here! Earlier this month the Rolling Stones performed for the first time in mainland China with a concert in Shanghai. I had hoped to snare a ticket through the Shanghai H3, but just missed out! As a consolation I met up with the hashers for pre concert drinks at a local well known H3 watering hole about a 20minute walk from the stadium. I then wandered up with them on the off chance I could talk my way into a reasonably priced ticket from the "yellow bears" (read "scalpers"). Needless to say, mission unaccomplished, even 30minutes after the show had started. Had fun checking out the "clientele" though. Every "wannabe" and "has been" rocker in town ... read more

Wow, what a day! Today I joined the Hyderabad Sai Young Adult group to do grama seva (service to villages) in a small hamlet called Pitalagudem. Pitalagudem is made up of several half built brick homes, thatched huts, and homes built out of plastic and bamboo sticks. The people here live in abject poverty, work as day laborers in a near by village, and get by on eating a watery rice mixture called "Kangi." Apparently two to three years ago, the Indian government made a pact with the village chief (referred to as the Sarpanch) that if the villagers paid a minimum sum to construct the basic foundation of the homes, the Indian government with subsidize the remainder of the cost to construct the homes. Somewhere along the way, this deal fell through leaving the villagers ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hiroshima » Hiroshima April 16th 2006

Arrived late into Hiroshima, and staying at another little ryokan. This one a little more of a ryokan hotel, since it is in the middle of the city - we are a short walk to the A-Dome and the Peace Park. The A Dome is the remains of the only building standing after the bomb was dropped. Went for a little orienting walk after showering, grabbed a beer and hit the sack for much needed sleep. That was the last of our long travel runs, thank goodness. We are here for 3 nights and that means that I need to get organized for some accommodation and plans once the trip ends in Kyoto on Friday. Think I will treat myself there for a bit. Today was SUNNY! and relatively WARM! Will update more in the next ... read more

We made it to take Melinda and her boyfriend to go with us to Kaifeng. The train was sick. It was sooo crowded. I don’t know how but we had to stand about 2 hours before we get to the destination station. It’s the city with the Legendary Judge Bao. The city has more cultural ambience than most developing cities in China. We went around the town then had a lunch at a crowded restaurat. We had to wait a long time to get our seats then shared it with other guests, but for my first time taste of xiao long bao, it was definitely worth it. We went to this tallest pagoda tower. They said it’s the tallest, but I don’t know if the tower was the tallest in the world, in asia, in china, ... read more

Probably not the wisest idea but we rolled back to Leannes at 01.30 am following farewell drinks with Mon and co and Candy and Taz. We did try to have an early night knowing full well that we had to be up at 04.30 am to get to the airport, but Cands and Taz were having none of it and kept plying us with drinks - cheers girls! So at 6 am we found ourselves sitting in a cafe at Cape Town International with 6 hours to kill before our flight - no we weren't there that early to bag the best seats but because Leanne was flying to Jo'burg that morning and we got a free ride to the airport - every penny counts! 5 am the next morning we touched down at Changi Airport ... read more
