Asia April 17th 2006

April 14-17 Back in Delhi to arrange some visas at the Chinese and Russian embassies before travelling on to the northern Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh. Of course, not knowing at all what day of the week it is, I rolled into Delhi on a Saturday and have to wait until the embassies are open on Monday. Taking full advantage of this opportunity, I have my first cup of real coffee in nearly a month. I’m not ashamed to say that I nearly cried when I looked into my cup and didn’t see any shred of evidence of Nescafe crystals. Thoughts on India This is a country of spitters. Everybody spits. Men spit left, right, up and down. Women spit in their best clothes or the dirtiest rags. Children spit from their little lips, dreaming of ... read more

Pete: Karaoke in this part of the world is rife. You can’t avoid it. You could try, but you would not be successful. They go mad for it. In every club or bar there’s always a machine and enough people lining up to embarrass them selves to warrant having one. This said, it’s actually really endearing, it totally sums up the general South East Asian public, there’s no bullshit and no façade. This is who I am, take it or leave it. I only wish that there were more people, my self included, like this in England. Having said that, quite why they felt the need to pump it out at an annoyingly oppressive volume for the entire seven hour bus journey to Siem Reap, I don’t know. No one was even singing. I even tried ... read more

Thats right!! We have burnt ourselves out a little with all this temple spotting and walking around the city. So Today was not very eventful we are afraid, just did some washing, that's always good when ther machine actually works and clean clothes come out! We went back to the Sri Srinivasa Prnumal Temple on Serragoon Road. This is the prettiest temple we have been to I think, very colourful, less tacky. On the ceilings there were amazing, beautiful patterns. From here we went to China town in search of a bracelet and magnets. 5 hours later, we had the magnets! You wouldn't think something so simple could be so stressful! We both had Char Siew for lunch which was nice. We got caught in the afternoon rain, which was terrential! Later that evening we went ... read more

Ranthambhore National Park. Home to 50 or so real live Tigers and a thousand or so tourists, here for the hope of catching a glimpse of Tony the Tiger. What are the odds in seeing one then? Well one couple we spoke to had been 5 times and hadn't even seen a discarded box of frosties. How was our luck?? Safari One: like any good adventure film, starts well. A Tiger print! "Fresh this morning" the guide tells us. 20 mintues later. No Tiger. But have Deer instead. I don't know much about nature but Deer wouldn't be standing around grazing if a Tiger was lying among them. 10 minutes later, a dead Deer. With a huge hole in the side of its belly. No confirmation of what did it, but fingers are crossed. 20 minutes ... read more

My family and I visited the bridge over the river Kwai. Only the second bridge (made of prefabricated steel) built by Allied POWs during WWII remains. The original wood bridge was destroyed by British bombers and the steel one was partially destroyed by American bombers. The entire railway was built by POWs and other forced labor. A national cementary finaced by many of the allied countries is in the middle of town and includes mostly British and Australian soldiers. It was a strange day at the cemetary. It was empty, quiet, and serene within the fence but the streets around it were full of trucks with people celebrating Song Kran/Thai New Year. This is basically a huge moving waterfight and everyone gets soaked. Music was blaring from the trucks and there was plenty of dancing. I ... read more

The train journey from Trang to Surat Thani - the leaving point for boats to Ko Samui - was a pretty straightforward and comfortable affair. However, my main concern was that we were heading to a place where thousands of other people were also heading for the full moon party, plus it was thai new year so it was the biggest full moon party of the year, and we hadn't managed to book any accomadation. We decided that rather than wasting time in Surat Thani trying to make a concrete booking we should head straight to Ko Samui (the larger island directly south of Ko Pha Ngan where the party is) where we hoped we could find somewhere to stay and then take a ferry over for the party. With this "plan" we bought our tickets ... read more

We spent today just exploring Yangshuo town. We tried out another restaurant in town that served huge plates of American breakfast food. The food is always good but the "coffee" is instant. It's horrible. Choose tea or get the 20 yuan ($4) Blue Mountain brew. Just don't expect refills. I do love the free wifi Internet in every restaurant. It's very cool. I can upload images to the b... read more

Once we cleared Immigration in Laem Chabang (two hours, could they be any slower)we took a car to our hotel in Bangkok. It was a two hour ride, so we got some snooze time. ML went right to work and I just hung out at the Sukhothai Hotel and it is beautiful here. The hotel room is bigger than our first apartment. It has a bath and a half, big living room, and a huge bedroom. The bathroom is larger than my second bedroom at home. I would be perfectly happy here for the next two days without ever leaving the hotel property. However, RL & ML did convince me to go out last for a two hour Thai massage. Now please know, I do not like massages, never have. There is just something weird about ... read more
