We had a free weekend to do whatever we liked so we decided to go and see the Death Railway, this is the railway constructed by Siam's P.O.W instigated by the Japanese during world war 2 to transport goods from Siam (Thailand) to Burma! It's crazy to see the graves of so many poor people who died while constructing this monstosaty! They were starved, beaten and forced to tunnel through concrete in the blazing heat. We rode the railway and it was a good experience although I kind of felt like I was honouring the Japanese's work, the way I looked it was showing respect to those familys of the P.O.W as the money raised goes to them. Got home Sunday and saw a god dam scorpion, I was so amazed! We were all having such ... read more

16/04/06 In much better spirits after managing to find a "PJ Murphys Irish Pub" within short walking distance of my prison cell yesterday. What a welcome relief !! All day breakfast of fried bread, sausages, bacon, fried eggs, hash browns, baked beans, with Heinz ketchup and HP sauce, plus a cold beer or two to wash it down. Just what I needed ! Feeling newly refreshed after that, popped in for breakfast again today, on what turned out to be an enjoyable day out in Hong Kong !! So, after my full English, I headed down to the harbour to catch the 'Star Ferry' to Hong Kong island. Very scenic view of the harbour on the short crossing. Hopped straight onto the bus to the peak tram, then up the steep slope to "Shang Teng" (the ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing April 16th 2006

Got into Beijing today. The boat from Kobe was pretty uneventful, and I had oodles of time which I mainly used looking through my guide, studying Chinese, and writing in my book. My room had 3 other people in it, and everyone on board was Chinese or Japanese. There was a kid in the room, who got pretty antsy and followed me around at times, which was amusing, but we were a bit limited by lack of common language. It was a good transition period, spent mainly with myself, aside from a few conversations I had with one English speaking crew member (he'd worked on cargo ships going all over the world, really cool!). After I got into port, I was accosted by taxi drivers, and it was rather intimidating not knowing the language at all, ... read more

Asia » India » Karnataka » Hassan April 16th 2006

So headed over to Hassan and arrived at 2am. Found a hotel...a bit expensive but at that time in the morning I couldn't be bothered trekking around the town. The next day I was on a bit of a mission to see masses of stuff. Despite this I didn't head off until 10am! First stop Sravanabelagola....The place with the big naked statue, which apparently means Monk on the White Pond. It's a really important Jain Pilgramege site. The statute is of Gomateshvara, a Jain deity. Apparently it's said to be the world's tallet monolithic statue. It's a very impressive and religious place. Every 12 years there is a massive pilgramage there. 2006 was one of those years...but it happens in January. However for the next few months Sundays are dedicated to the pilgramage and loads of ... read more

Wow - even the views from the airplane were pretty spectacular as we were flying in to Port Blair which is the capital on the island of Little Andaman. When we arrived at Port Blair we thought we would have to stay a night in the "capital" as the ferries to our final destination of North Havelock Island were only in the morning - it turns out if we hurried up we could catch an afternoon boat - yippee, Chennai to North Havelock in one day. Before we left Port Blair however we managed to book the cheapest accommodation on the Island at a government run place called the Dolphin resort which was pretty nice. It didn't take us long to explore the island and to find ourselves on a stunning beach with white sands and ... read more

**If you dont want to read about the travelling experience from Phuket to Koh Pangan then miss the first paragraph!!** After Phuket we decided to travel over to Koh Pangan for the Full Moon Party. The travelling however was a disaster! We expected a coach at 7.15 so at 7.45 when a 10 person mini bus turned up we didnt know what was going on. With the mini bus pretty much full we went on to pick up another 3 people so were very overloaded especially with everyones huge backpacks etc! We carried on as we were told we were being dropped at the coach depot. Half way there suddenly very hot water starts leaking on one of groups legs and smoke starts filling the mini bus; the driver then decided to stop for about 10 ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville April 16th 2006

It was 7 weeks since we'd seen a beach!! Shocking we know. It was the Buddhist New Year whilst we were in Sihanoukville so the place was rammed with Khmer families celebrating. They love the sea and once in they don't really get out for the rest of day, way after it gets dark anyway. They also like to swim fully clothed. Something to do with decency we're sure but it's quite funny to see them turn up in their new outfit of jeans and jacket and then just jump in! A big surprise here was that our accomodation was free!! We stayed with a family who run one of the beach shacks. ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok April 16th 2006

Upon reaching Bangkok, I made a new goal for myself, to get invited into an Opium Den and play poker with some old Thai gangsters. Why would I want to do this? Why wouldn’t I want to do this is the better question. I’d be taking a stroll down the Ko San Road, minding my own business, possibly with my head phones in, quietly bumping along to some King’s of Leon or maybe even The Killers when I’d be approached by a Tuk Tuk driver that has spotted the glimmer in my eyes that is craving something a little more dangerous than what’s available to most travelers. He’d be a younger driver, maybe twenty seven or less, too young to have already succumbed to the monotonous life of ripping off tourists everyday while he silently dreams ... read more
