Before I kinda go into whatever it is I may write about, I have tons (ok, hundreds) more pics up on my photo site here: http://jetsetseattle.zoto.com/galleries ----no reading involved!! What’s it been, three, three and a half weeks? I wish I could post on this blog more, but internet access is sort of few and far between for me. Or else I have to pay out of the nose for it. Speaking of which, I’m kind of sick of paying out of my nose for everything here. I’m sitting in a café that has kinda cheap coffee. 300yen ($2.80) for a 10oz. cup of black. A steal! I’ve experienced a lot of different parts of Tokyo/Japan in these past couple of weeks. In the same day, I went to a Taiko Matsuri (traditional Japanese Shinto drum ... read more

We are near the end of our trip and have now entered the land of mystical gods, white sand beaches, and thousands of temples galore - we are in Bali. The hotel we are staying at is absolutely gorgeous. I think it's the best value we have ever reserved. Uma Ubud, is situated about 3 km from the center of Ubud city and is sorrounded by lush tropical forests and a river that runs throughout the city. We just went on our morning walk through the rice fields and saw the villagers way of life. On the streets of Ubud, there are huge manholes on the sidewalk, and one of the older guests from the hotel fell into the hole and cut up his leg pretty badly. It brought shivers down my spine just looking at ... read more

I thought it was about time to let you all know about how I am actually living, rather than specific outings and days. There are now eight of us living in one apartment (four bed rooms, three bathrooms, which is great! Especially now the girls have one bathroom between us, so we don’t have to put up with the smelly boy bathroom) in a block in the northwest corner of Xi’an, about a kilometre from the Bell Tower, indicating the city centre. There is another apartment on the floor below that has the big dining table, the office, and various computers and laptops all plugged into the wall. It’s pretty dodgy walking around the table, as there are wires and things everywhere, a veritable deathtrap if you aren’t paying attention. We have a cook, two women ... read more

They say that on average, it takes a person 21 times of repeating a new behaviour to shed a bad habit. Apparently nose-picking in children wasn’t being tested in this study…. Teaching - still something I am learning about, and loving more and more as each week passes…although… if one more kid sneezes in my face I think I might snap! Unleashing ones ‘natural’ bodily functions / noises anywhere, anytime is common practice here, so there are a lot of those ‘functions’ that happening all the time (aren’t you glad I’m telling you this?!). It’s something to get used to… One great policy they enforce at many schools is that anyone who is sick has to wear a hospital mask when at school...sure it may look a little Silence-of-the-Lambs-ish, but without it, we would all have ... read more

Well, we got waylaid on a beach again. It's so easily done though, isn't it? After the dive trip we were planning to head straight up to Laos but then another option was offered up: Railey Beach near Krabi, 2.5hours south. It was in the opposite direction but somehow we managed to justify it and shared a cab/mini van with the polish couple, Jarek and Danuta, that we'd dived with. I have to add that Jarek and Danuta are by far the most generous, warm, lovely people you could hope to meet. RAILAY BEACH It's actually part of the mainland but you can only reach it by long tail boat, so it has the feel of, and for all intents and purposes is, an island. It is a thin pennisula with Railay West on the west ... read more

AHH!! This blog is not complete, but I wanted to at least get the pictures up for you to see. Captions and a complete entry are on their way!!! Dear (no longer) abandoned blog, During spring break (March 31-April 6) CIEE took us on a group trip to Xinjiang which is the most Northwest province of China. The population there is largely made up of one of China's many ethnic minority groups, the Uyger people. Since Xinjiang (especially the city of Kashgar) is geographically so close to the middle east, the Uyger culture more closely resembles the cultures of the middle east. Also the Uyger people look middle eastern with a dash of Chinese mixed in. Our first stop was Urumqi, the biggest city in the area. We stopped at the city's museum and got to ... read more

The Ang Thong Marine Park is an archipelago of 42 islands covering 250 square km and is a 90 minute boat ride from Ko Samui. It's also the location of The Beach which I happen to be reading at the moment (cheesy I know). The only way to visit the park is by an organised day trip so we booked up on one which involved kayaking and snorkelling. Our first kayaking stop was for a leisurely lap of one of the islands with plenty of time to enjoy the views and the impressive coastline as well as briefly entering the couple of caves that were accessible due to the tide. It was incredibly relaxing and peaceful drifting along with only our group of 5 kayaks in sight. The peace and quiet didn't last long enough though, ... read more

Welcome to ultra-modern Malaysia! Or it seems that way based on the other countries we have beem to in the last few months. It is like home with chain restaurants, super-highways, pricey cars, and little india. If only home was this cheap! Malaysia and Singapore will be good countries to do last I think, I little bit more like home to integrate us back into Western culture. It seems too soon to be thinking about coming home...time has been a strange concept for me during this trip. Each day flies by so quickly but when I look back it seems like ages ago that we were exploring Angkor Wat or even in Vietnam. Perhaps it is because we have done so much is a relatively short period of time. Any other ideas? I just can't grasp ... read more

(Dave writes...) Before we left Laos, we celebrated my birthday in Vientiane. Of all things, we found a bowling alley there and went bowling with the Dutch couple we'd met, Arrie and Joke. The following day (my actualy birthday) we made a real pilgramage - we went to the Beer Lao brewery! I was very excited. They even had specific road signs outside the brewery (see photo). We were allowed into the bottling plant and received a free beer too. I was delighted with my birthday celebrations. Gem also bought me some tooth floss amongst other presents, which I was very excited about as it's hard to come by. From Vientiane we took a bus to Savanakhet, further south, en route to Vietnam. The following day we travelled to Hue in Vietnam. Hue was once the ... read more
