On a Thursday night we lie, shivering under the covers desperate for the heater to kick on, the only pair of socks I'd packed working to thaw my feet up in the central highlands, surrounded by coniferous trees and nay a coconut in sight; Friday afternoon scorched in the middle of desert sands that may well take the skin clean off your feet, thick dusty air giving way only on occasion to a merciful breeze from the bay - a rolling sea of brick-red sand dunes as far as the eye can see.... welcome to Vietnam. Over thousands of years ethnicity, political allegiance, cultural practice and foreign meddle have found their culmination in a country with one of the world's most fascinating contours - a snake-like head gazing north toward China, the serpentine body wrapping itself ... read more

If your not in to kite surfing or wind surfing then 2 nights and 1 day is enough time to enjoy what Mui Ne has to offer. Having said that, getting to see it all is hard work since the town stretches all the way along the 20km coast... not a problem with a ped of course. We based ourselves right in the middle of this stretch of the map and explored north in the morning and south in the afternoon stopping back in the middle for a beer at midday. North, through the local village we stopped by the sand dunes which is apparently popular for sliding down on mats which you can rent from the local families. We were so pressured on parking, renting 'slides' and buying from the cafe that, feeling annoyed, we ... read more

Having in mind that we would be arriving in Mui Ne around midnight and searching for a place to sleep at this hour simply didn’t seem too appealing, just in case we had booked a night in one of the guesthouses online a day before. We mentioned to the bus driver where we were staying but weren’t sure whether the nodding meant that he understood what we were saying or whether he was just trying to get rid of us. The latter one seemed more probable to be honest… We arrived in Mui Ne a bit later than planned as it was getting close to 1.30 when we reached the town. Driving through empty streets, we were looking on both sides making sure we haven’t passed our guesthouse yet but we were driving so fast that ... read more

I booked my bus for Ho Chi Minh City in the morning. There were a couple of things known about Mue Ne that I wanted to do but I hadn't booked anything. A guy in the street with his motorbike approached me asking what I was up to and offered if he could show me the main sights around. Sure enough, I took him up on his offer. He took me to the white sand dunes, the red sand dunes, the fairy stream and the fishing village. The fairy stream I had no idea about. He just dropped me off, told me to take my shoes and socks off and walk down the stream. It was so pretty. On my journey sown the stream, I met two guys from Spain. They had come across a patch ... read more

On arrival in Mui Be it is a good idea to have some idea where your hotel is so you can ask your bus driver to drop you off in an appropriate place. Naturally we didn't do this and therefore we got a good look at the main tourist strip watching everyone else get off. Finally we were the only ones left and it turned out that the bus didn't go past our place. At least a taxi driver knew where we were going. It was miles out of the way! Our initial disappointment turned to delight as we had an almost deserted beach and an incredible beach front bungalow. Except for needing to get taxis going to and from the strip, it was perfect. We highly recommend the White Sands Resort. We did plan on ... read more

Days 148-149 (Sat 2nd – Sun 3rdFeb) Da Lat Luckily my bus to Da Lat wasn’t an early start or a night bus so that was made me more positive for the trip. The bus left around 11am and we got in around 3pm. During the trip I first watched Top Gear and then spent the rest of the trip looking out the window. Da Lat is 1500m above sea level so it is a windy road all the way up. The views are pretty impressive if not a little scary at times with some large drops. On arrival at the bus station, there is free taxi/motortaxi to your destination. The idea is you get a free lift and they get 5-10 minutes to try and sell you a tour for the next day. On arrival ... read more

Geo: 17.0849, 107.111I feel a sense of space and contentment. Warm breezes, a beach side hut, swimming in big waves, and delicious food everywhere we eat. Pho is the national soup, eaten at breakfast and other times of the day. The stock is the key. I've tried pho many times and had the best pho stock at a local, sand-floored restaurant here. It was absolutely amazingly delicious! Food in Vietnam is the best....We share laughter daily with the Vietnamese people - from our favourite corn vendor to the very friendly guy who works at the clothing store next door to us. Mui Ne is becoming the kite-surfing center in the world and we were mesmerized by the activity.Exhilaration.Above - colourful half moons dancing in the windBelow - speed, rooster tails of ocean sprayA graceful collection of ... read more

Geo: 17.0849, 107.111It's a relief actually to get back on the bike and moving again, the weather is fantastic, clear blue sunny skies and lots of lovely scenery. These are cycling notes really so won't interest everyone but even have a wee look at some of my pictures, the beaches and scenery down this part of Vietnam were beautiful. On leaving Nha Trang I passed all sorts of resorts and ended up out on a peninsula as I am trying to stick to the coastline as much as possible. I pass Diamond Bay resort which has a golf driving range in it, someone is using it at the minute swinging and whacking golf balls out into the sea, I didn't expect to see that here in Vietnam. The road is pretty remote which I like, it ... read more

The bus journey from Da Lat seemed straight forward enough and we were just outside of Mui Ne when the driver lost control of the bus as he was texting, clipping the kerb hard which sent the left wheels of the bus over the central reservation, so just the right side wheels were on the road. Everything on the left side of the bus (including above the seats) came hurtling over to the right side (including people), luggage which had been stacked up at the back came flying forward hitting people while we all ducked and held on tightly, we thought the bus was going to topple over but it swerved and spun until it finally braked to a sharp stop in the middle of the road. The engine was smoking and everyone was a bit ... read more

We were very glad we had been to Phan Rang, and had been nearly alone on the beach, and we were grateful for the great feeling of calm that comes from not being just one more of a huge crowd of loud, often disrespectful, tourists. Mui Ne is overdeveloped, though the beach was never full, nor were any of the hotels (th eoffer clearly exceeds the demand), and its saving grace is a stream of local tourists, lightening the contrast between "them" and "us" that often proves so tiring. If you find a place to hang out and stay away from the craziness, it can be as good a place as any to relax by the beach... Though by now you know our feelings about touristy places... We spent one day working on our tans, taking ... read more
