We left the luxury and quiet of our resort and began our first leg on Highway 1, the long stretch of coastal road road, home to all the dreade open-tour buses. What we didn't know was that the road was in great condition, and was mostly flat, wide and empty. After buring through 40 km in an hour, we were feeling pretty confident until for no apparent reason, Sadie's chain came loose on the middle of a bridge. We wheeled it to the roadside, and before we had a chance to look at it ourselves, there was a small army of young guys on their way to go fishing pulling Sadie's bike appart. They sent a guy off to get some tools, took the chain aprt and had us going again in no time. We convinced ... read more

The bus from Dalat to Mui Ne was pretty rough, the roads were probably the worst we have been on in Vietnam to date but completely bearable compared to other bus rides in China or Indo. Mui Ne is a small-ish town set in a large bay. The town is basically all along one road that follows the ocean. We got dropped off on the out-skirts of Mui Ne. Since the road is so long and we didn't want to lug our backpacks around for hours we grabbed a bite to eat and while Rebecca watched the bags Tyler went to find us a “home”. The majority of the hotels are huge resorts looking to charge up to $100/night for their “cheap” rooms. On Tyler's adventure he found that many other prices had gone up and ... read more

When we left the resort in Phan Thiet on November 22, we took a taxi a few miles north to the adjacent beach town of Mui Ne. We'd booked two nights at the beachfront Mui Ne Backpackers Guest House to give us a few days to regroup and plan our next move, while still enjoying the beach. We arrived and were greeted by John Jenkins, a delightfully enthusiastic ex pat from Australia who ran the guest house with his wife, a native of Vietnam. He was skyping with his grandkids in San Fransisco at the time of our arrival, but said "no worries," he could call them back later. He was thrilled to see that we shared a name when he looked at my passport, but I had to woefully inform him that Jenkins was no ... read more

The wrong kind of break Going to begin out of sequence, as something quite dramatic happened. We had just arrived in Mui Ne, which is a beach town in Vietnam. Our room wasn’t ready at the guest house, so we popped over the road for lunch. On our way back Louise slipped off a step and tumbled heavily, after which she couldn’t straighten her arms. So we pop down to the medical clinic where x-rays show two broken elbows. Bugger! Lou has to wear slings for at least three weeks, which means we can’t move on in that time – I can’t carry all the bags and Lou is still in a bit of pain. After the three weeks Lou has to have more x-rays to see how well they’ve healed. If it’s bad news we ... read more

A few years ago, an aquaintence of ours slowly managed to convince himself that he had become a world-famous rock star. He would appear at our place in his dilapidating Audi wearing tight jeans and a leather jacket and tell us his story of the annoyances of becoming so "recognized". Rather than dispute his claims to fame or try to intercede, we listened in a way that seemed oddly pathological and tried to sympathize with his plight as it was clear that trying to derail his train to a psychotoc break was fruitless. Finally he showed up one night in a panic, the whole world was turning against him, his fans were always watching and it was driving him crazy. Other superstars were on his side, only they could understand, but he felt safe with us ... read more

Well Hello all from Mui ne Vietnam! We arrived in Mui ne following a 5 hour bus ride from Nha trang. On our way we stopped at a garage which had loads of different types of birds in cages laura ran back to the bus to get me to have a look, when I arrived I noticed a monkey was hanging on the wall right above the toilet Laura had just used, she hadn't spotted him at all. It would of made a really good story if he had jumped down beside her when she was doing her business you might of heard all the way back in Dublin haha! We got checked into our hostel Mui ne backpackers which is only recently done up, our room is really nice and very modern. The back of the hostel ... read more

Geo: 17.0849, 107.111On arrival in Mui Ne, we were dropped off at the dragonfly, with relatively little hassle - faint! There was a large restaurant attached to the front of the hotel, the rooms were freshly decorated, we had a double bed each, AC, a window, a TV that worked and a fridge = happy days! Now the place itself is more like a strip, and is full of very large and expensive resorts (the russians like it here for some reason!), shops selling EXACTLY the same things, practically next door to eachother and restaurants and bars. We went for a walk that first afternoon, to find some food and see what was about. After a 30 min walk, we came to the conclusion, not much was about and the restaurants were all pretty much the same! We ... read more

We took the bus from Dalat to Mui Ne late morning. The ride was down very winding roads and as soon as we hit the first curve someone was sick on the bus. I pushed my earphones further into my ears trying to block out the retching noise but when I looked out of the window, I saw the sick bag flying past - nice. On reflection, every bus I have been on for the past few months had at least one person who suffered from travel sickness. The ride was horrendous and the bus was tiny but we eventually made it to Mui Ne. We heard conflicting information about Mui Ne - somewhere we read that it is very small and easy to find your way around, other sources said that it was widespread and ... read more
