Today was a special day, we were up and out by 10 in the morning with a list of places to see and a driver to take us to them! We started with a little village called Tam Coc and took a boat up the river with two little old vietnamese ladies paddling furiously and three big men taking in the view! Although i was handed a paddle and told to row my little heart out whilst Dale and Mark sat and laughed. The river makes its way underneath som massive hills and the caves are great. Once at the other end we were hounded by other ladies in boats who wished to sell us all manner of tat. The scenery was great and we arrived back at the village after a few hours. Next stop ... read more

Salut mes amis, everybody's doing alright we hope ? Life is treating you well and you're having a lovely time. Today's sunday, we assume youre taking a breath in the Haengematte, enjoying a good deal of ice-cold Gin Tonic. We had a perfect finish in Shangri-La, a place which is very rich in myths and legends. There's a saying that this holy piece of land used to preserve the youth, actually it contains loads of magic vibes and power. I can recommend the story "Lost Horizon" if you wanna get into it. Nevermind, shortly before got invited by the high lama to reach nirvana, meaning giving up all obsession, possessions and passions in order to receive wisdom, we saddled our horses and headed down south to Vietnam. We intend to travel southwards, started in Sapa (nice ... read more

We arrived in Ninh Binh at 10pm expecting to be met by someone from the hotel, but the street was deserted. Luckily there was a shop open and the owner kindly rang the hotel and got someone to meet us. After a few minutes a guy on a moped turned up, and realising there were 2 of us hailed another moped and told us to get on. We had been offered moped taxi rides in Hanoi and always said no, but this time we didn't have a choice, so with our heavy packs on we each got on the back of a moped. I asked my driver if I could hold on to him as I was worried about falling off sideways with my pack on, when he went around a corner. He said he would ... read more

I will have to make my travel blogs shorter. The computers here are very slow and I do not have enough time to do my journal entries . . . Feel free to double click the pictures for a larger view . . . After Halong Bay - The next morning we drove 2.5 hours south of Hanoi for our scheduled 2 day bicycling tour in the areas known as Ninh Binh and Tam Coc. This area resembles Halong Bay, but without the sea. The region is full of large limestone rocks surrounded by verdant rice fields. This part of the tour provided us with the opportunity to get off of the tourist trail and into some rural areas of Vietnam. Our first day, we bicycled 3 hours into the town where our hotel was located. ... read more

Leaving Hue, we travelled across the former DMZ to Ninh Binh, a loud, industrial city where nobody spoke any English. The city was most beautiful from the rooftop of our hotel at sunset, where we could see all the colorful buildings in town and the gorgeous limestone stones set in fields against the horizon. We walked for an hour looking for a restaurant to have breakfast in. We found a woman across from a school selling no-flavor ice cream, which was actually still pretty good. Then we found a little locals soup spot where we asked for pho and got rice and chicken. That's about when we learned that people in the North can barely, if at all, understand people in the South. Thus, all the words we had learned in Vietnam so far meant nothing ... read more

... read more

Halong BAy was a great experience; a minibus of us (15) were driven out of Hanoi through yet more smog and haze towards the sea; but driving through one more town the air was black, really am v. upset at the horrendous pollution in this country as well as China; and worse, that they don't get it; are still building lots of factories with tall chimneys to put more smoke up into the atmosphere. heyho. I've managed to get laryngitis, am sure it's due to the smog, many folk here wear masks covering nose and mouth to avoid the worst, and lots of catarrh and colds abound. thankfully the Bay was great, tho we didn't get to see sunshine; we were taken on a Junk out into the bay for 24 hours, I had a cabin ... read more

4/1 - Endangered Primate Rescue Centre, Cuc Phuong National Park, Kenh Ga Floating Village We awoke to another glorious day - and I was full of excitement because we were going to the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre near the Cuc Phuong National Park. About a week before we left Australia I opened the Lonely Planet at a random page and, on seeing the word "primate", I quickly rearranged our schedule and a few things to include a stop. Our driver from the Thuy Anh hotel cost $50 US for the day - though a trip can be organised as a group for a lower price. The centre is about 50kms and 1.5hrs from Ninh Binh. Upon arrival, a rescue centre staff member took us and 2 other travellers through the centre (entry is free). It is ... read more
