6th August was a day of travelling. We took the train from Hue to Ninh Binh, which took 11 hours. The journey was comfortable if it was not for television entertainment for 11 hours on a very high volume - it was like watching the European Song Content for 11 hours.... On 7th we rented motor bikes and went driving in the countryside. Nimh Binh is know for its rugged rock formations and caves. We went on a 2 hour rowing trip on the river to see these and it was stunning and the most stunning landscape I have seen in Vietnam. After that we drove up the mountains to see a charming cave pagoda.... read more

At last, an uneventful bus journey!...and we were in Ninh Binh, a small town, with nothing to do, but a great base to visit the surrounding area. We hired a scooter for a couple of days and set about exploring! Our first stop was "TamCoc", described as Halong Bay in the rice paddies, and they weren't wrong......only this place, in our humble opinions, was much nicer! We hired a boat and were rowed through the paddie fields, in between huge limestone hills, covered in lush vegetation and through several low caves. We got there early and so it seemed like we had the whole countryside to ourselves, really serene! Dan - Arhhhhh yes the 'Scooter' Nic was on at me because she wanted to learn how to ride a bike so with a little apprehension I ... read more

Salut a tous!

hey everybody, a severe cold was almost killing me last thursday, so it wasn't a bad idea to purify my longs with some fresher air... after a great "farewell" evening for Xavier and Jenny, Ione and I decided to catch the bus to Ninh Binh, only 90 km south of Hanoi... in belgium this would take less than an hour to reach... (un)fortunately this is Vietnam... always same, same but different :) And what started with the 2 of us, ended in a great day with Becky, Thobias, me, Ione, the Aussi and the american... It sounds easy, "take the local bus to the busstand and from there you catch another bus to Ninh Binh. Every 10 minutes, one is leaving" That's what we did... and so we were waiting in the bus that the nervous ... read more

Dieser Aufstie... read more

After a short drive standing first on the bus , we managed to get front row seats, which was not a good place to be due to the way the drive here in Vietnam. So all the way we were like holding to our seats. It was a very scary experience (that was going to be repeted all the way down to Saigon). When we got there Mr Luong from the Queen Mini Hotel was waiting for us to take us to the hotel. He was very helpful and the hotel was lovely, with basic rooms with fan (and TV). He gave us some advice on some places to do, so we booked 2 tours for the 2 days we were going to spend there. The following day we had a motorcycle and guide that took ... read more

Farewell Hoi An Our last days in Hoi An have been real fun. The temperature here is going up every day. In other words: it is burning hot! What else to do than heading for a cool swim regularly... We found a nice quiet stretch of beach in Hoi An for our regular daily dip. Cruising the land on our motorbike (read: scooter), playing in the waves, drinking a Saigon beer and avoiding the sun was about all we did. Lilli managed to become a semi-pro in playing the local card game. This increased her status amongst the renters of our parasols at the beach significantly ;-). Moreover, playing cards with the locals was great fun and she even managed to remember how to count to 2 in vietnamese. Well, one has to start somehwere... When ... read more

Today was another special day, up and out by 8.30 this time and in the car for the long journey to the Cuc Phong national park. Here we had a big bowl of noodle soup for breakfast and then walked the short distance to the Endangered Primate Rescue Centre for a half hour tour of the facilities, unfortunately they were also full so we brought Mark back out with us! The tour was great, their mission is to hold the primates until they can be released back into the wild. We spent a good portion of the tour watching one particular gibbon who put of a very impressive acrobatic show for us. Next up we headed deeper into the national park to see the 'Caves of the Prehistoric Man'. Cue more climbing up some very steep ... read more
