31/1 - travel day Hoi An - Hue After a nice early start we boarded an 8am bucket of bolts for the low low price of US $4 and we arrived into Hue, formerly the capital of Vietnam, at around midday. After checking into our hotel we meandered along the beautiful Perfume River, which runs down the middle of Hue, and through the beautiful old buildings and their manicured gardens. Hue, in central Vietnam, was the capital of the Nguyen dynasty, which lasted from 1802 to 1945. They were the last royal family of Vietnam. The key attractions in Hue are the remaining tombs of some of the emperors, and the Citadel which served as business and pleasure quarters for the reigning king. For New Year's Eve we went out with our friends Sib and Steve, ... read more

I woke up this morning with the worst hangover ever, but somehow still made it to the train station by 9.30am. The party last night was wicked, but this morning it really didn't feel worth it. The train to Ninh Binh is hard seat only, so it was quite uncomfortable sitting on a hard wooden chair for 2 half hours, but it was quite interesting. I was the only Western person in my compartment - I don't think many people to go Ninh Binh independantly, most people just do it as a day trip from Hanoi. Some of the Vietnamese people around me tried to talk to me, but I couldn't understand what they were saying and they couldn't understand me, so we all gave up trying to have a conversation after a few minutes. When ... read more

Hola!!!

Hi Friends and Family, Today, we visited Hoa Lu (the capital under the 10th Dynasty) and went to Cuc Phong. Cuc Phong is Vietnam’s oldest national park where we did a very basic trek up to the caves to find evidence of pre-historic man! With torches, we climbed up the steep slippery hill. The caves were dark and interesting with traces of fossils and natural elements. The park is also a tropical rain forest which contains rare hardwoods and an amazing wildlife. We visited the Cuc Phuong Primate Rescue Centre which is sponsored by the Frankfurt Zoo in Germany. We were guided around various species of primates and met one of the German sponsors from an Animal Wildlife Organization. We were also guided around various species of primates and met one of the German staff members ... read more

Hi friends and Family, Meet up time is 07:15. Today, we’re going to Ninh Binh via train. We’re on a day train rather than a night train. I went to India in 2005 and the overnight train I took then was extremely uncomfortable. The Viet Nam Railways train is pretty alright. We were in the 1st class Sleeper carriages that have 4 Sleepers per compartment. We were in Compartment No. 9. We’re with Simon and Trevor. Provided are free bottles of water, duvets, sheets and a pillow. The beds had mattresses and each room had air Con, individual lights, a wooden attached table, and hooks. It was pretty comfortable. There was a mirror on the door, guards and constant railway staff plied and paraded the train, and the doors had internal security locks. We had a ... read more

We were supposed to spend these past 3 days on a boat exploring the famous karsts (limstone formations that jut out of the sea) of Halong Bay, however, our plans were changed by a tropical storm. All tours to the bay had to be cancelled. Instead we headed a couple hours south to the tiny town of Tam Coc. Situated in some of the most stunning scenery we have seen yet, Tam Coc has karsts of its own, but here they jut out of verdant rice paddies instead of water. We started our visit of Tam Coc by taking a row boat paddled by some locals down a river which ran through three underground caves (Tam Coc means three caves). It reminded Ashlee of a scene from Pirates of the Caribean. Unfortunately, we weren't the only ... read more

Another leg of the trip comes to a close. We are in Nihn Binh. For tourists, it is mostly known as a stopping point to some of Vietnam's natural attractions, which we did over the last two days. We are heading to Hanoi to catch our flight in about 12 hours. This has been an eventful two weeks and we have much to process. Henry... read more

Well I liked HaLong Bay (dragon bay). I thought it was fun because we got to jump off the boat and we met alot of new people who were really nice. When we went to Sapa, we went on two hikes and the second one was the best because it was all muddy and when you're about to slip it was fun. We saw someone slip, she got her pants really dirty. Well it was a nice hotel in Sapa and we met lots of people who had blue hands because there is a plant that you boil for ten days and then it gets indigo and then some people bite on the plant and it makes their teeth a little bit blue but after ten days it's black. In Hanoi, we bought alot of things ... read more

its a good movie, in case anybody hasnt seen it (the title of my blog that is). so ya, i am in ninh binh with patrice, and we have spent the past 2 days seeing the beautiful countryside from the back of a motorcycle. we both had drivers who took us around (cause its crazy enough being on one of those things without actually driving it yourself) and showed us some pretty awesome stuff. we went to the tam coc caves, where we got in a boat and had a lovely tour of the rice paddies and got to go into the caves. today we spent the day in the national park, which was really beautiful as well. we did a big long hike to see this ancient tree, which just got us really hot and ... read more
