We travelled from Hanoi to Ninh Binh on a 'hard seater' train. The train itself was very old and had metal grills over the windows making it appear like an animal pen. The seats and luggage storage areas cleverly transformed into hard sleeper beds for those on longer journeys. We walked to our seats and the our fellow passengers were very helpful in moving their luggage around to make space for ours. How lovely we thought. The journey was 2 hours long and cost $6. Not much for us, but a great deal for the Vietnamese who some were travelling the 18 hour long journey back home to Ho Chi Minh city costing over $30. With an average wage of $75 per month in Hanoi, this was approx half a months wages, hence a considerable sum ... read more

After arriving from Ninh Binh by coach, late into the night, we spent one night in a dusty hotel, where breakfast consisted of sitting at a table eating bad food whilst being plagued by the staff. They really wanted you to sign up for a tour through them, and between mouthfuls of stodgy food we took turns in declining their offers. Then we ran the gauntlet of getting outside where one guy was convinced we needed a motorbike ride. The town itself was pretty dusty and uninteresting, just on the edge of a boom though. Tam Coc, it's caves and the national park being Ninh Binh's only draw, which most people would come see on a round trip from Hanoi anyway. So we hired a driver and went to Cuc Phoung National Park! The park was ... read more

16.11.08 Km travelled 17402 We look outside the window from the height of our room but there's not much to see. A curtain of fog is hanging outside. Still is our only day here so we will try to make the most out of it. We have breakfast at the hotel to make it easy. We also have to leave all our stuff at the hotel as tonight we're leaving. As soon as we're ready we meet our drivers, Dai and Go. This hotel is apparently famous for its safe drivers, so we're keen to try. We jump on the scooters and start our way through the streets of Ninh Binh. Not that Ninh Binh has many roads; it is actually unfolding mainly on the sides of one street. So we're soon in the countryside. Our ... read more

Hi all, This is a big blog of photos. I have a new camera. Hope you like the shots. After Cat Ba Island we traveled the well worn path by 3 buses and a boat. It took the better part of a day but we met new friends, Jens and Sylke from Germany; became sardines in the local 20 seater with luggage, deliveries, and 39 locals; view the countryside through smeared glass windows while feeling every bump in the road on my not so soft seat that was built for a race much smaller than my own. We arrive in a flurry of activity all for our benefit to win our attention and extract more dong from us than we would like. But we (that is, I) had to leave the area to be able to ... read more

Tuesday afternoon, 11 November 2008 - My trip to Bái Đính pagoda was an interesting adventure. The new pagoda is being built on the mountain at Gia Sinh commune, Gia Viễn district, Ninh Bình province (108km south of Hanoi). The name “Bái Đính” was chosen in memory of the old pagoda at this area and also the name of the mountain. The new pagoda is the biggest pagoda in Vietnam at present, also one of the works in order to celebrate the Millennium Year in Hanoi. You may wonder what the relationship is between Hanoi and Ninh Bình in this event. Before 1010, the capital of Vietnam was located in Hoa Lư of Ninh Bình province. In 1010, King Lý Thái Tổ decided to move the capital from Hoa Lư to Thăng Long (Hanoi at present). ... read more

Tuesday morning, 11 November 2008 - I traveled with my parents and their friends to Phát Diệm stone cathedral and Bái Đính pagoda in Ninh Bình province on a one-day trip. This is my 4th visit to Phát Diệm cathedral, which is located in Ninh Bình province, 130km south of Hanoi. It has been long known as one of the most attractive religious and tourist sites in Ninh Bình province. The 4-roofed cathedral was designed by priest Trần Lục (Father Sáu) and built in 1891 with stone in an area also abounding in ponds, grottoes and structures imbued with Oriental religious architecture. It is said that it took only 3 months to build the church, but preparation had taken place 10 years before. Wooden columns and stone blocks were transported by rudimental vehicles from other provinces. ... read more

(Day 218 on the road)After my violent and very unpleasant departure from Cat Ba Island, I went to the city of Ninh Binh, some six hours south (of course I was overcharged about 25% on the ferry and bus as I later found out). The bus driver was crazy: Going way too fast through the small villages and constantly honking his horn, he literally forced scooters and bikes off the road into the ditch or else we would have hit them. As in China, it is Darwinian traffic laws to the extreme in Vietnam. Put simply: If your vehicle is bigger and faster, you have the right of way, regardless of any traffic laws or consideration for others. Ninh Binh as such is not spectacular, but the surrounding countryside surely is! The primary feature of the ... read more

Nin Binh is just a 2h bus ride from busy Hanoi. The first stunning karst towers slowly become visible while slowly approaching the city. Nin Binh is nothing special and mostly characterized by the noisy highway number 1 running through it with a constant background sound of honking trucks passing by in highest speed. Vietnam is host to the worst drivers in the world. Traffic rules are mostly ignored and substituted by first way of passage with a sound orchestra to tell everyone about this. The cars are even equipped with horns that have a long lasting echo sound that lasts for few seconds. I wonder if the accident rate is even higher than in China. We found a clean and nice hotel and booked the whole top floor suite for 25 US$. As everywhere the ... read more

This could be a long blog! Well, Ninh Binh has to be my favourite place so far. The town itself is really, really quiet. No "where you going? You want Cyclo/motorbike/pineapple/hat/lighter/wallet/shoes?" when you walk down the street. All you get is the little kiddes waving and saying "hello, hello!", and getting all excited when you respond. You never get bored of that. Don't worry, Im not getting all maternal - Vietnamese kids are WAY cuter than Irish ones. There is bugger all to do in the evenings here, but on the first night there was a Buddist festival. We were having a drink on our hotels roof-top terrace (we were the only people there) and we saw these glowing, floating lights drifting across the sky. Across the city, they were lighting these lanterns, and the heat ... read more

Sunday afternoon, 31 August 2008 - After visiting Phát Diệm cathedral in the morning and having lunch in Ninh Bình city, my friend and I traveled another 12km by car to Vân Long nature reserve. I had not been to this site before, so I was really looking forward to seeing it. When our car reached the site, we saw the vast range of limestone karst mountains along the stream and the landscape was absolutely beautiful. It reminded me of Guilin in China and Hạ Long bay in northern Vietnam, but this place is very special, as it’s far less touristy. The site was just found out 7 years ago, then developed into a nature reserve and not many people go there yet. The locals at Vân Long are also gentle in comparison with the ones ... read more
