Xin Chao Moc Chau !

Abby took the lead on this one: We arrived in Phong Nha at 5am, just in time to see a breathtaking sunrise and rainbow over the mountains, the oldest karst mountains in Asia. We're starting to wear down a little, so we used some of our time in Phong Nha, the adventure capital of Vietnam, to rest.  We began by having a beer and watching the sun rise, and then getting another couple hours of sleep. For lunch we made the hairy motorbike trip a few kilometres out into the country to try the famous peanut chicken at "The Pub with Cold Beer," a little oasis overlooking the river with a swimming pool, shady hammocks, and you guessed it: ice cold beer, which isn't easy to come by around these parts. Chickens are killed to order, ... read more

Nathan here, after surviving the great Sa Pa shidd of Saturday. Essentially Ive been working with this random dude on Whatsapp whenever we look into getting a private car who initially arranged our airport transfer on arrival that I purchased on bookaway.com . The price quotes are unbeatable; the only downside is a near complete language barrier, so keep your phone charged and google translate at the ready. These are SUV's going for compact car prices; Ill be happy to share the contact info in our final post where we will leave all our links and best practices. Once again this wizard behind the curtain came through and our driver got us to our homestay earlier than expected. I kept wondering what the payoff was for the travel time; why this market was so special that ... read more

Hoi An, this little city was once considered the best port city for trade by Chinese and Japanese merchants. The Hoi An lantern festival is very popular but during the current Covid situation the number of lanterns and visitors were much reduced but despite that it was still very magical and with a boat trip along the river where Hieu & Spring set two lanterns into the river, giving special offerings and good wishes to particular members of the voyagers on board. A very poignant moment. This tradition started centuries ago, where on the full moon people from all over the region would come to participate. Our tour ended in a beautiful coffee shop where we had views across this ancient town.... read more

We arrive from the overnight train journey about 930am. My first opinion of Hanoi is that despite being large city, full of Vietnamese people who drive like psychos, it's still a lot more chill and quiet than Saigon (Ho Chi Minh). We check into our hotel, my room's on level 8 - the elevator only goes to level 7.. AGAIN. I'm not quite sure how they designed these hotels, but what a fucking ball ache. We do some sight seeing to see: Long Bein Bridge, The Literature Museum, One pillar pogada, outside of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, his house and then the biggest waste of time ever - the crashed B52 Plane. It looks like someone had a fight with a can opener. It was an epic walk through a narrow alleyway full of shops ... read more

5 May to 7 May 2019 - I travelled to Sapa on a 3-day trip for the purpose of visiting the Fansipan summit. At an altitude of 3,143m, Fansipan is the highest peak of Indochina (the old name given by the French for Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia during its colonial time). This is the first time that I went to Sapa alone. On my previous trips I travelled with my friends and parents, and that was many years ago (1998, 2008 and 2012). I had a dream of seeing the summit of Fansipan for a long time, and at last I made it. In the past, I had to travel for at least 12 hours by bus or train between Hanoi and Sapa but now, thanks to the new expressway, the travel time has been shortened ... read more

Bai tu long It’s Thursday morning so a quick three hour car journey to Halong Bay stopping for lunch and a water puppet show along the way. Certainly something you should see while you are in Vietnam but not something to see twice! Once in Halong we were greeted by our host, Tom and escorted to our boat for our 3 day tour on the Dragon Pearl 1 - a very comfortable boat for 15 of us. A mix of Brits, Americans,Swiss and Austrians. And what a trip it was. Bai Tu Long is further away and has less tourist traffic than Halong Bay but with very similar scenery ie scattered islands and limestone stacks set against the sea and ‘mostly’ blue skies. Moving serenely around the bay was incredibly relaxing and the food on board ... read more
