Every so often when you are international jet-setting (or in my case International Bus Riding) you get caught up in the storm that is the local holiday season. I was in the thick of it here in Vietnam which was a five day, no work, no holds barred, party to celebrate "Reunification" or "Independence" if you will of the North and South of this country. I scrambled to get out of Hanoi and chose to go to Cat Ba Island three hours to the East in the Gulf of Tonkin. Cat Ba Island is a National Protected Park and gateway to the less toursited part of world famous Ha Long Bay. A miscalculation on my part thinking I would escape the madness, but as always things just seem to work out. Leaving Hanoi I was able ... read more

Spedzilismy dwie noce w Hanoi, wedrowalismy po uliczkach miasta - glownie starej czesci, gdzie sie zatrzymalismy. Motorynka zjechalismy troche wiecej, rzucajac okiem na Mauzoleum i park, ogrod botaniczny, wiezienie Hoa Lo, przejechalismy sie na druga strone rzeki, szwedalismy sie po kafejkach i kosztowalismy lokalnego browaru i lokalnych dla regionu przysmakow. Jednym z ciekawych lokalnych rarytasow byla Egg Coffee, kawa z jajkiem. Long Bay, przepiekna zatoka pokryta prawie 2 tysiacami malutkich wysepek - skalnych wapiennych formacji, ktore zostaly wpisane do UNESC... read more

I had heard conflicting stories about Halong Bay but it was definitely on the must do list for Vietnam. As you know, pollution and rubbish are twin anathemas to me so I was not too keen to travel with all the big boats. Our lovely hostel in Hanoi, Old Quarter Hostel, recommended Swan Tours to us. Boats that sailed on the quieter Ba Tu Long Bay seemed appealing and off we went with the irrepressible tour guide Mee keeping us entertained on the journey to the port. The rest stop, International Tourist Rest Centre, could have been avoided, but maybe not. Maybe this was a government requirement for all the tour buses to stop at this huge megamarket which sold everything from immense marble statues to small packets of green tea. We were dropped off at ... read more

Hit and Run, six countries, one month, two girls! We had one month of school for winter break. A whole month to explore Asia. After looking at a lot of different routes and working out the best financially Val and I decided to do Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, The Philippines, Taiwan and Japan. Unfortunately the Irish had friends from home coming for part of the holiday so couldn't join us. The first thing we did when we arrived was book two taxis. The first to take us to our hotel for the night the second to take us to Ha Long Bay the next day. Doing it at the airport ticket office was a lot cheaper. Unfortunately while we were there is was Lunar New Year and we wouldn't be able to get a taxi with this ... read more

The third day we were again up early, hopped on a bus and headed out to Halong bay for a day out on the water. One of the most amazing, beautiful experiences of my life. Ha Long meaning 'descending dragon' references the story of a dragon flying into the bay and throwing up the islands to defend Vietnam from harm. The boat was surprisingly pleasant and with a dragon figure head just added all the more to the sense of fairytale about the trip. Also serving fantastic coffee throughout the day - a definite bonus! First stop was the heavenly cave, a short walk up and into one of the islands suddenly revealed that the whole thing was essentially hollow and riddled with thousands of stalactites and stalagmites twisted in all sorts of beautiful ways and ... read more

Second morning I woke up surprisingly easily, which is lucky as the breakfast the hotel provided took a bit of navigation. They offered bacon, sausages, croissants and toast, alongside noodles, stir fried vegetables, salads and dumplings. An early bus ride took us to Halong bay, slightly less hair raising than the taxi and we got some great views of the city out of the window. Busy, noisy and colourful - it was striking in its immediacy. Scooters everywhere and shops selling everything you could imagine (and things you can't!). Heading to the outskirts of the city we saw lots of water buffalo and ducks as well as hundreds of people working in the fields wearing the traditional conical hats. The hostel is not so impressive and the beds are hard but I still can't help but ... read more

Geo: 20.9063, 107.082For nearly two weeks, Vietnam has been trying to deliver me a message, one of such profundity, that it is rivaled only by the depth of the Vietnamese culinary repertoire. I paid no attention to the early murmurs that started in HCMC, but they didn't stop, growing louder and louder as the days passed, until they could no longer be ignored. Vietnam's pleas had been muffled for so long, that they finally erupted into a cacophony on par with HCMC's chaotic traffic, shattering the peace and tranquility of Halong Bay, resonating between the iconic limestone pillars dotting the serene waters. "Dude ... your ass be gettin' fat, stop eating so much of our food!!!" Vietnam served notice today, its declaration conveyed with such force, that the button on my shorts burst, skipping across Halong ... read more

We left Hanoi at 8.00am on the 28 September by van for Halong Bay. There were two other couples in the van heading our way. Four hours of exposure to Vietnam's open road traffic culture. Not to be missed. Also not for the faint hearted. Centre lines are a rough guide and passing distances a judgement on how close you can get before pulling in off the oncoming traffic lane. No accidents though, just a few white knuckles and clenched jaws. Halong Bay setting off point is a wharf of tour boats tied up and, at this time of the year, mainly empty. We were on a Bhaya Cruise line boat and once on board found ourselves with only two other couples; Wayne and Jane from Blenheim (he a police detective and she a primary school ... read more
