With this being our 2nd and last day on the boat I think most of us were quite happy to get off it! Starting with wishing Hayley a Happy birthday and giving her the card and a cake (which wasn't looking its best) that id brought her yesterday - she was chuffed. Making our way upstairs we had breakfast which was a few slices of bread with a very uninspiring egg. The crew then wanted us to check out of our rooms by 08.30 presumably so they could go and have a lay down before the next lot of tourists come on board! Sailing back over to Cat Ba island which was a few hundred metres away was to be our first and well, only stop of the day! Dropping some more people off ( who ... read more

So, waking up to an apology text message and an offer of $40 for the trip we were happy. This is all we were trying to get it for in the first place! Hindsight's perfect sight I guess. Packing my bits up again we headed to a local store to stock up on a few provisions - anyone would have thought we were gonna be stranded at sea for days on end with the amount of stuff we brought! Anyway we got collected at lunchtime and driven to the port which was only about 5 minutes away. With a large amount of tourists coming and going we stood around for well over an hour while they somehow got it all organised - considering these guys do this everyday you possibly would have thought that they would ... read more

Mon 29 Jun we checked out of Golden a Times Hostel 3 at lunchtime and transferred to Viet View Hotel - luxury! There was even a Wooden tub in the bathroom! We went for lunch at the Highway 4. Interesting menu! I've attached photos so judge for yourself! We had fresh prawn and pork spring rolls and Saigon spring rolls followed by spicy ostrich satay for Tom and I had crispy battered squid with olives. Tue 29 Jun 8.30 we were picked up for first part of our next tour to Halong Bay. It was a 4 hour drive with a Reststop at another services with a charity workshop. Our guide, Dat explained about the birth defects caused by the use of Agent Orange during the Vietnam war and how some of those affected don't want ... read more

Halong Bay Majestic and mysterious, inspiring and imperious. A Unesco World Heritage Site. That's the description from Lonely Planet and it's not exaggerated. Agus called it stupendous. My description is as Richie would say "Marvellous". Nina thinks spectacularly beautiful and Elsie says "eh..." For the first time we booked a tour from the hostel in Hanoi. We had two choices, a cheaper one called The Lemon Cruise which had all the options we were after or The Cristina Cruise, the expensive luxury option. But when we went to book our lemon it was unavailable, and so our luxury adventure began (sigh ;). Early the next morning at breakfast a guy called Aung, as in (Aung Suu Kyi) started chatting with us, liked the sound of our trip and rushed off to buy a ticket to come ... read more

Hanoi >> Ba Be National park >> Bao Lac >> Meo Vac >> Dong Van >> Yen Minh >> Quan Ba >> Ha Giang >> Hanoi After some deliberation we decided to go with a friend's recommendation to visit the northern mountains instead of Sapa in the northwest, which has become a tourist attraction appealing to large tour groups. We read a detailed online blog in the Vietnam Coracle that also inspired our Tonkinese mountain route. Before we left Hanoi for our week in the north we made some motorbike adverts to display in backpacker hostels in the hope of generating some interest for when we returned to Hanoi. We quickly realised there was a lot of competition from other travellers who had also completed the route from Ho Chi Minh and were also looking to ... read more

Welcome to two more weeks of school holidays for Tiffany and Leslie, so as always, we are heading on the road. This is the first entry of a few that is going to bring us around Vietnam from the North to the South. This is also a trip that should never have happened, that I didn't want to happen...but that I'm happily doing today, as this trip has to be done, by Tiffany and Leslie. These two are nearly 13 and 15...and at the speed it is going, they will be pretty soon at University, and I will that day have to negotiate with them to enjoy their company on holidays. Every parents of kids who have left the nest know this...even if you have a great relationship with your kids.Young adults do believe, that living ... read more

Weekend 20 to 22 March 2015 - I bought a ticket at Hoàng Long bus company in Hanoi and traveled to Cát Bà island for 3 days. It took me 4 and a half hours to travel by bus and speed boat from Hanoi to the island. It has been 20 years since my first trip to Cát Bà island. I still remember that day when my boat was approaching the island at the sunset. I saw some simple buildings along coastline and rock mountains behind them. At that time there was no electricity on the island and the locals had to use generators at night. Today Cát Bà island is a very popular tourist destination and it has changed a lot. The purpose of my trip this time was to visit Lan Hạ bay which ... read more

Hoi An was a beautiful city, or the old quarter bit was anyway. That's the only bit we really visited. Lots of history and nice places to eat. We went out one night for a few beers and some shisha. The hotel was good too, it had a massive pool with a swim up bar. The only problem was the day we were leaving there was a big wedding at our hotel. They had the after party at about 12pm and started singing very loud Vietnamese karaoke. They really love karaoke here.. I don't understand it myself! We got the bus to Hue. Hue was a bit boring really, not much to do. But we went out for dinner and celebrated Kimberley's birthday with sparklers and shots. We then went out to a bar called Brown ... read more

From Hanoi it is an easy excursion to get to the limestone islands of the world famous Ha long bay. Every shop offers a tour. We preferred the option of going independently to Cat Ba island and then picking trips from there. You get a flavour of the other side of Vietnam as you pass through the industrial port of Hai Phong to catch a small ferry to Cat Ba. This arrives in an area of mangroves where another bus takes you to the main town. The beach front of the main town has been developed and there are many many hotels of all standards. Judging by the development hoardings we saw it has only just started. If you return in a few years you will probably find a golf course, brand new water fronted apartment ... read more
