Unser nächster Stopp ist also Dong Hoi.

Geo: 20.9063, 107.082DAY FIVE (1/8/13)— Ha Long Bay We have breakfast and pay our bill at the Sofitel Metropole Hanoi and head to the bus for a four-hour transfer to Ha Long Bay, directly east of Hanoi. Our drive takes us through urban, suburban and rural areas, through nice neighborhoods and some pitifully poor ones. The farther we venture from the city, the rougher the road becomes. Our guide Minh fills us in on the history of Vietnam, its economic and political climate. Along the way, we stop at a roadside shop which is HUGE and sells many, many products, some of which are very high quality. Larry tells us we will return here tomorrow for lunch and a chance to shop so we begin to scope out our potential purchases. Back on the bus, our ... read more

I was very fortunate to have my friend Anisa travel all the way from Montana to Hanoi for Christmas. She stayed past when I had to return to Dhaka for work, but we managed to see and do a lot during our travels together. We started with a rough itinerary: Day 1: Arrive in Hanoi on Christmas. Eat a giant Christmas dinner. Day 2: Recover from jetlag (Anisa had to get used to a 14 hour difference) and eat phở. Day 3: Eat phở and take night train north to Sapa. Day 4: Explore the town of Sapa and see if the locals eat phở. Day 5: Hike the mountains above Sapa and check hill villages for phở. Day 6: Explore local foods in the market and sample varieties of phở in Lao Cai, take night ... read more

From December 12 through 15, Scott and I cruised through Bai Tu Long Bay, a cleaner and far less touristy section of Halong Bay, one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. After doing some research and hearing traveler's stories about how polluted and crowded Halong Bay has become, Scott found out about the Indochina Junk Company, one of the very few companies that host overnight cruises through Bai Tu Long Bay. Though definitely a splurge, we decided that this would be the best way to avoid the crowds and ensure that we'd get the most out of our trip. As soon as our journey began, we knew we had made the right choice. At around 8:00 a.m., we were picked up from our hotel in Hanoi in a comfortable, air-conditioned van, and, after picking up a few ... read more

Geo: 20.9063, 107.082I timed my journey to Hanoi so I could arrange a trip out to Halong Bay for my birthday and what an adventure it turned out to be. I met a lovely girl Maria while booking up and a young guy Adrian so we all booked the same trip together. I had already done some checking and we were getting a good deal on the two night tour which meant one night on board a junk out in Halong Bay (on my birthday) and one night on Cat Ba island the following day. In the morning we all met at the reception and it turned out 20 of us all from the hostel were on the same tour, 5 guys from Argentina, 4 Israeli girls, 3 German guys and a few more … which ... read more

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! Oh my god the last 3 days were absolutely amazing! On Thursday morning we got up and were picked up from our hostel at 8.30am, Had a four hour coach journey to Halong Bay with one 20min snack/toilet break. Boarded our boat which looked pretty cool. We then had about half an hour to go to our rooms, have a look around and have a chat to the other people on the boat. We had spoken to a LOT of people before we booked the cruise who had said that they were a bit dissapointed with it as the food wasnt very nice and they were stuck with a load of older people on their boat so it wasnt a lot of fun. However we had the completely opposite experience! It was such a laugh, ... read more

9 November to 15 November 2012 – This was my last trip with the photographer. Although we sometimes had different points of view and disagreements because of our personalities, I would still like to thank my traveling companion for sharing the costs and experiences with me on the long road. From now on, we will go our different ways and meet new people. It’s not easy to say goodbye to someone, but that is the way travel is. Back to the last trip. After spending some time in the mountain region, the photographer and I decided to change the scenery, so we went to the seaside. On this trip we went to four islands (Cô Tô, Ngọc Vừng, Vân Đồn and Cát Bà) and two bays (Hạ Long bay and Bái Tử Long bay). Cô Tô ... read more

So of course when you travel you learn a lot. But on our 3 day 2 night junk tour of Halong Bay I learned quite a bit: 1. Squid fishing is impossible. 2. Americans are backwards in a few things: I can now convert meters to feet much better, I am can figure out Celcius temps when people talk about them, and I have learned to eat with my fork prongs down. 3. The chance of meeting someone from Malta is slim to none. We met a couple from Malta. 4. Halong Bay was formed by dragons. 5. Our travel agent is for real! When we booked this tour I did a lot of research to figure out the best way to book and read a lot of reviews of this travel agent. So I emailed ... read more
