4 October to 8 October 2012 – This was my third trip to Hà Giang province. On my last trip to this province 6 months ago, I traveled on a tour. I also wanted to visit Hoàng Su Phì and Xín Mần, but I didn’t bring enough cash for the trip, as these places were not included on the tour. I decided I would go back during the rice harvest. The travel companion and I took a 5:30am bus from Hà Giang city to Xín Mần. We arrived at Xín Mần town 5 hours later, although the distance is only 145km (mountain road). It was foggy, so we couldn’t view the terraced rice fields on the way. We spent our first day relaxing, visiting market and drinking tea with the locals in the town. Next morning, ... read more

I got collected at 8am for the 1 day HaLong Bay tour. Halong bay is a unesco world heritage site, the meaning behind the name is translated to descending dragon bay. The bay is home to thousands of limestone karsts, the 'kissing chickens' feature on one of their currency notes. It took 3.5 hours to get there and we had a real mix of nationalities; Russian, Polish, Malaysian, Vietnamese....a good bunch though. As soon as we boarded we were served lunch, a mix of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. Really nice. We the. Took a 4 hr tiur round the bay, some of the rock formations are outstanding, it's a truly beautiful place. We stopped at some caves that we're found in the 90's by a fisherman. We arrived back at port late afternoon and then ... read more

Well yes I am back - I know you have all missed me whilst I have been swanning off on Halong Bay. So here goes, We get picked up on time by the cruise company and start picking up the other passengers. This is where the fun began as we had one gentleman who was Australian (name of Nigel) and he had a very loud voice. Nigel decided that he was going to talk all the way to Halong Bay which was over 3.5 hours. So by the end of the journey we all knew that he had spent over 700$ in Vietnam in 2 days. We also found out that this was mainly on women - we found out that they had taken advantage of his lack of understanding of the currency - it was ... read more

Picked up by Paloma Cruise & taken to Halong Bay. Bus was full as some had their trip cancelled the day before due to rough seas? Three & a half hour trip. There was another Aussie named Nigel on tour with us. He talked all the way up with my Vicki - non-stop. Hard to say who is the bigger talker. Vicki didn't help as she continually maintained the conversation. Nigel complained about everything, in particular being ripped off money wise. Mr pessimist. He even bought a brand new Nikon SLR camera, and he was disappointed with it - because he only had a standard lens. It would appear that he lost most of his money through regular visits to the brothels, and his lack of understanding of the currency. A regular aspect of his conversation ... read more

Day 23 - Leave Hanoi, go to Halong City My alarm didn't go off this morning! I woke up naturally at about eight. It wasn't a problem though as I had got all packed last night. Had the obligatory scrambled eggs and bread which I was really ready for because I didn't have dinner last night. It was good to see Thanh again. Today we are all set to leave for Halong Bay. We have two guides this week, Thanh and Son (AKA Steve). I haven't met Son before, he went with the trekking group to Sapa. We were about to leave when the skies opened. I have never seen rain like this in Hanoi. With minutes it was ankle deep outside the hotel. We all got geared up with our raincoats and ponchos over us ... read more

Xin chao!! Hanoi was quite a smack in the face of an introduction to Viet Nam for us, but we loved it! Now, after such an onslaught of motorbikes and city noise Viet Nam stunned us to silence once again with Ha Long Bay's unique calm beauty. It is a geological sight of wonder! Over thousands of years limestone karst peaks have been forming and moving out into the sea. According to government statistics there are exactly 1969 peaks in the area (coincidentally the same year that their revered former President Ho Chi Minh died). In actual fact there are over 2000 dotted around this bay. So what did we do when we got here?! How does one marvel at such beauty? One gets on a cruise!! This sounds a little too much like a typically ... read more

After lots of research and horror stories, we booked a bit of a mid to upper range cruise in Halong bay, the problem with this becoming evident as we got on our nice spacious minibus to Halong Bay. The bus was full of families, older couples and no other English people. Now don't get us wrong, we don't want to spend all our time with other English people, but the language barrier was problematic! When we arrived at Halong bay dock, it was chaos, hundreds of boats all shapes and sizes. Sadly, the government has made the boat owners paint all boats white. As a result of this and the fact that they are constantly forcing the boats into little spaces between other boats, means they are all looking a bit scruffy. Halong bay is a ... read more

Day 16 Teaching week starts Got up at eight, and showered ready for the next move. Today we are moving to Nam Dinh to do our volunteer teaching week. There are six of us in the group: Nadia, Britty, Hannah, Becky mad me. The rest of the group of the original 17 should now have arrived safely at Sapa to start their trekking week. I was thinking about them all last night, wondering how their overnight train journey had gone! I do hope it wasn't too bad for them all. I think some will find it harder than others. We all had breakfast before heading off into the local market to buy a bouquet of flowers for the couple who will be looking after us at the home stay. Without them, there would be no home ... read more
