After breakfast we left Boss and picked up another couple. Typical stop on way at giant tourist shop with silk and lacquer ware and giant stone turtles. On arrival to Halong Bay 3hrs later we were ushered to the Glory Cruise waiting area and offered tea whilst we waited for our fellow cruisers. A tender took us out to our junk. Really lovely timber interior with lots of velvety accessories. Once everyone was on board we cruised through the bay with the massive limestone rocks passing by as we had lunch. We stopped at a fishing village and kayakked around. A fellow traveller lost his iphone from his pocket as he got out of the canoe so our return to the boat was delayed a little as one of the local guys tried diving for it. ... read more

Dec 10 HEADING TO HA LONG BAY Announcements: 1. I will no longer drink cheap draft beer.... 2. I don't like our driver. He yelled at me during our only pit stop. I was at least 15 seconds late--no idea how he treated the 2 young women who arrived a minute after me. 3. I tap this on my tablet as we grind closer to our maritime adventure. Tapping is wonderful while en route, bus bouncing over broken pavement. A keyboard couldn'do this. A guide, who displays that cheerful rectitude of a party member, told us there were half a million handicapped survivors after the war and our rest stop featured crafts that they made at government sponsored venues like the one we were about to visit. None of the craft workers I saw were old ... read more

Dec 12, 10 a.m. Almost froze bf dinner last night, but warmed up after stuffing myself with seafood and rice. Slept early, up at 6:30 and left by eight. The tourist bureau, or whoever organizes this thing, are very good at moving bodies. We left on a smaller junk from the bungalows, then an hour later ended up on our original "luxury" boat w. Staterooms and dinining room. In between, we dropped off another group at their larger boat, and another group joined us on the big boat. Most of the day spent on boats and a bus getting back to Hanoi. Great meal on a terrace overlooking the street. One moment of terror when I realized, as we were given the bill, that I hadn't topped up my wallet (we've been taking minimal cash out ... read more

Just a note from aboard the train we almost missed, Nanning to Hanoi (Henei in Chinese). Jinyi is more random than I am and enjoys dashing and smashing around, especially at meal times. Our late afternoon snack (actually a huge batch of curried chicken with fresh coconut milk from the market) stretched on past our departure time, and when we hit the street there were no cabs to be found, or we got outmaneuvered by a long line of people waiting, like us, for a cab with a red light on. When we finally found one, it was off into a Friday pm rush hour. We bailed when we got close to the station and sprinted for two blocks with our backpacks on. We got to security six minutes prior to departure, only to learn the ... read more

Dec 11 Ah yes, the people. I'd forgotten how good it feels to have a beer with other travelers and hear their stories and throw in one or two of my own. The young people were welcoming of this old fart last night. Some glimpses: 1. After about five minutes, it became clear yesterday that James from Ireland, 30?, a male nurse in care facilities, wasn't about to let his nation down. He was both hyperactive and funny from the moment the beer fridge opened here, and only when we went kayaking was he without a beer in his hand. I sat beside him later, for some reason, and he revealed a serious and caring side that was passionate about demanding more qualified care for his clients. 2. His three Irish female friends, one of whom ... read more

Animal welfare in Vietnam, not to mention dogs in Slovakia and Spain Next door to my new residence is a centre for the torture of animals. In Britain we have abattoirs which are supposed to be humane. They are humane - humans have nothing to fear because the place is nice and clean and away from public view. But the animals are terrified. I know because I have seen them. In Vietnam, they don’t have so many abattoirs. Why deprive the people of the pleasure of seeing the animals suffer? The living lie bound, next to the dead and the half-dead. They keep their “pet” dogs chained up all day. One possible excuse is the likelihood of the dog being stolen. In Slovakia, more than 10% of the population is “Roma” . There is a 10% likelihood ... read more

Have just spent the last three days in Halong Bay. Weather was very overcast and it rained on the 2nd day - but that didn't bother us. This bay is a UNESCO world heritage site. 2000 limestone islands that rise steeply out of the sea. Very picturesque. We were on a boat with about 20 other people - met people from all over the world and had fun with them singing karaoke and sharing meals. We were taken into some pretty awesome caves - Surprise Cave - set of three caves that got increasingly bigger - very beautiful but the crowds of people spoilt it a bit. Later that day we climbed to the top of one of the islands (took about 20 min). Then came back down for a swim - water was great. Next ... read more

Today went on tour to the Ninh Binh area. Visited temples of the Chinese dynasty kings 960-1020 Meet some nice people from Malaysia, Germany and Columbia. Guide was helpful and told us all the stories about the temples etc. Heard stories of how the eldest son killed the younger brother and then poisoned the king. ended up poisoning himself as well. The middle son became king but he was only 6 yrs old, so the queen made the general the king. Traveled then along very bumpy roads to the Ninh Binh area. went on boat trip for 2 hours. Paddled by vietnamese woman - using her feet to row with - went through three caves - very picturesque kaast scenery, and local village life. Hounded to buy things all the time though. Then went on short ... read more

Hi everyone. Had long uncomfortable trip up here, but all worthwhile. Hanoi is a fascinating city. There are 6million people and about the same number of motorbikes. Its on the go all the time. We are in the old quarter of the City near Lake Hoan Kiem. Spent the first day wandering around this area and went to a Water Puppet Theatre show. They have shops for everything here with particular things all in one area, eg around the hotel is all the shoe shops, another area will be all clothes, and even Christmas decorations. People are all very friendly, and the Hotel people are particularly helpful. Climate is not too hot but quite humid. We have eaten at local restaurants trying out the Vietnamese dishes - all have been really nice. I don't think we ... read more

Hello everyone! After exploring Hanoi I can't even begin to tell you how much I was looking forward to a weekend in Halong Bay! Before we even arrived I was talking about staying longer...although a typhoon was due to hit the bay on the Tuesday, so we were strongly advised not to do that lol. On Saturday morning a bus picked us up from our hotel and we traveled to Halong, which was a four hour drive.... as usual I fell asleep (I think so far I have managed to stay awake on about three bus journeys!). When we arrived in Halong we climbed on board a small boat that took us to the junk where we would be staying the night. I had read some real horror stories about these junks on tripadvisor so we ... read more
