As I mentioned before this area of Ko Lanta, where we are based, is almost perfect in every way but every now and again we seek a bit of variety. With this in mind we set off bright and early to reach Beautiful beach and then carry on walking further along the coastline to explore other bays. Long beach, as you would expect, is long. 4kms from one end to the other. Beautiful Beach is another two or three Kms along so to cut out some of the walking and save energy for exploring, we went up to the main road with the intention of taking a tuk tuk as far as Beautiful beach. Normally when we get to the main road we get acousted by tuk tuks shouting " where you go? Want tuk tuk?" ... read more

We are soon to be leaving our beautiful tropical island in Thailand, and although our nearly two month stay this year has exceeded every other year we have been returning since 2017, we are still very reluctant to leave, and have already decided to stay even longer next year. But another island country, Indonesia, now calls us. It is another country that we also love, for all that it offers of its beauty, its spirit, and its rich cultural diversity. Then, in May, we shall be returning to the Canadian prairies - to experience the endless sunshine, the wide open spaces, and the immense diversity and beauty of our homeland. We live in relationship with all three countries - their people, their landscapes, their diversity - and like a transient lover, we never want to leave, ... read more

You're probably thinking from the title that we are about to leave the island of Ko Lanta. No, we have another two weeks yet. However a lot of people we've met over the last few weeks have begun to drift away. Some off to visit other islands but most of them are returning home. Ko Lanta, especially the area we are in, is like a magnet, it's one of those places that, once you've discovered it, you just have to return. So many return year after year and stay for a few weeks or even months. Many of us are here have one big thing in common - to escape the winter back home. We've met several nationalities- Swedish, Germans, French, Italians, Finnish, and Canadians. All from cold countries! As we approach the end of March ... read more

One of the things we love about this part of the world are the warm evenings. On Ko Lanta, if you want it, there's always something going on. We'd heard there was a Food and Music Festival being held on Beautiful Beach so decided to take a trip there one evening. As we walked past the mini mart and up the dust street to the main road a tuk tuk driver called out- "where you go? Tuk tuk? " We told him the music festival and he looked clueless, all the same he gestured us to get in. When we got onto the main road he asked us to point which way then got out his phone and brought up Google maps. We pointed to Beautiful beach and he seemed to know it, but I got ... read more

Here are some facts about our next stop Thailand. Thailand was actually known as Siam until 1939 (and again from 1945 to 1949). Siamese cats are native to Thailand. In Thailand, it is illegal to leave your house without underwear on. Thailand is the world's largest exporter of rice. Thai brothers Eng & Chang Bunker inspired the term "Siamese twins" and were joined at the chest. They died in 1873. It is illegal to step on any Thai currency. The ship is moored at Laem Chabang which is the major port of Thailand. There are literally tens of thousand containers waiting shipping or transfer within the country. A huge car park is covered with cars made in Thailand by Toyota, Honda etc and aimed at export. We are off to see the Sanctuary of Truth today. ... read more

The name Beautiful Beach congures up pictures in your mind of a palm fringed, crescent bay with soft white sand and an aqua marine blue sea. That's exactly how I would describe Beautiful Beach. It's a few kilometres along from Long Beach, where we're staying, and the easiest way to get there on foot is along the beach. Of course you can get there on the road if you hire a motorbike or take a tuk tuk but, as usual, we chose to do it the hard way! After a hearty breakfast of fruit, museli and yoghurt, or in Stan's case an egg, bacon and cheese muffin, We set off before the temperature rose too high. A half hour of walking gets you to the far end of Long Beach and then it's a rock scramble ... read more

Three and a half days after leaving home we're now on Ko Lanta. Three flights, three taxis and one minivan. We've been dreaming of returning for the last three years so happy to be back finally. As we're planning to stay for a few weeks were taking things quite slowly. It's just so nice to be experiencing warm, or should I say hot, weather. No putting on layers of clothing before leaving home. Here we just slide our feet into flip flops and go. Everyone walks around with a smile on their face as if they've not a care in the world. It's very infectious. So now it's time to chill out. Firstly we wake up to the sound of some nearby chickens clucking away around 6.30am, as they quieten down there's a bird with a ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Rai February 9th 2023

I‘d researched the best way to get to Chiang Rai and it seemed that was to use Greenbus, a 3-4 hour journey, depending on which class you choose. I pushed the boat out and booked the VIP one. The company website was a pain in the neck all round and I should have just paid a tiny bit more and done it through 12GoAsia. It was mostly in Thai but somehow I managed to book, pay and choose a front row seat. I must have printed it off then and there (just as well, if you don’t it disappears and you cannot find it anywhere) and it didn’t look much like a ticket although it had some QR codes on it. I assumed I’d have to go to the counter and get a proper ticket on ... read more
