As I mentioned before this area of Ko Lanta, where we are based, is almost perfect in every way but every now and again we seek a bit of variety.
With this in mind we set off bright and early to reach Beautiful beach and then carry on walking further along the coastline to explore other bays.
Long beach, as you would expect, is long. 4kms from one end to the other. Beautiful Beach is another two or three Kms along so to cut out some of the walking and save energy for exploring, we went up to the main road with the intention of taking a tuk tuk as far as Beautiful beach.
Normally when we get to the main road we get acousted by tuk tuks shouting " where you go? Want tuk tuk?"
Of course this morning there were non. We walked in the direction we wanted to go and eventually came across one. He turned out to be a really steady driver, going about ten miles an hour but I wasn't complaining, the road can be very bumpy in parts.
Going by road is much further than by walking along the beach so it was
nice to be driven and take in the sights as we went.
Once on beautiful beach we found a shady space in front of the rustic cafe there and settled down on the sand. Quite soon we put on our snorkels and swam around the rocky edge there. There wasn't a lot of coral but tall green plants swaying around and in between the rocks with a variety of fish swimming around. Felt a bit like flying through an underwater forest.
Next, feeling refreshed after our swim, we set off along the coastal path. Tall palm trees heavily laden with coconuts grew all around but the path was clear to see but a bit rocky in parts.
We came across a small scenic bay called Tricky Trocky. The path down looked a bit tricky ( maybe that's where the name came from!) so we decided to look from the top.
Carrying along the path we came across a river estuary, to get across we had to negotiate a few rocks and a foot of water. Once across we could see a very rustic looking restaurant on stilts above the beach. The tide was up so practically
no beach to pass by on.
We decided to take a look at the restaurant and climbed up the steep wooden steps.
What a suprise! As we emerged onto the wooden platform strewn with tables and chairs we could see a rather nice swimming pool and behind some quite posh looking bungalows.
From this point we headed back to Beautiful Bay where we stopped for an ice cold beer before continuing back in the direction of "home". We crossed another estuary full of longtail fishing boats and onto Relax Bay.
The temperature was really rising by now but we stil had a way to go. We'd decided to walk all the way back along the coast rather than try and flag down a tuk tuk.
At the far end of Relax Bay we climbed the steep stone steps up to a dusty pathway and then a scramble along a rarely used jungle path. It was quite overgrown so a bit hair -raising in parts particularly as we were only wearing flip flops!
With a sigh of relief we emerged back at the coast and now all we had to do was clamber around the rocks
back to the far end of Long Beach.
Before tackling the looong walk back along the beach we called in a bar we knew sold a very tasty snack of cheesy chips with bacon and another ice cold beer. ( Think we deserved it and it certainly helped with the walk ahead!)
By 4pm we arrived back " home" , had a much needed dip in the sea before a nice refreshing shower and siesta.
