One of the things we love about this part of the world are the warm evenings.
On Ko Lanta, if you want it, there's always something going on.
We'd heard there was a Food and Music Festival being held on Beautiful Beach so decided to take a trip there one evening.
As we walked past the mini mart and up the dust street to the main road a tuk tuk driver called out- "where you go? Tuk tuk? "
We told him the music festival and he looked clueless, all the same he gestured us to get in.
When we got onto the main road he asked us to point which way then got out his phone and brought up Google maps. We pointed to Beautiful beach and he seemed to know it, but I got the feeling he didn't know why we wanted to go there at 7pm and already dark.
He turned out to be a nice steady driver and as we zipped along the road he slowed right down on all the bumpy parts.
We weren't exactly sure where the track down to Beautiful Beach was as it was quite dark and he
didn't know either so slowed to a walking pace at one point. I still think he thought we were crazy for wanting to go there!
Then as we came over the brow of the hill you couldn't miss it... Bright lights everywhere! So suddenly our driver now understood why we wanted to go there. Amazing that the tourist get to know about these things but the locals don't.
He dropped us off and asked what time we'd like to come back. We decided 9pm and he promised he would be there to pick us up. That was really nice as I'm sure the tuk tuks waiting there to take people away would have tried to charge an inflated price.
We wandered down the dusty track lined with food stalls selling a whole variety of freshly cooked food and settled on some pieces of chicken breast coated in crunchy breadcrumbs and fried, followed by a jacket potato with cheese. It was interesting to see how she added the cheese then melted it with a blow torch! Don't think I'll be doing that at home though!!
The cannabis bar was especially colourful with cakes, cookies and goodness knows what else!
It was blasting out Bob Marley. We resisted the temptation to try any!
As we got close to the beach there were little bars set up and a children's playground with a huge inflatable slide.
Further down was a site of the music venue, straw bales were laid out around low tables and a huge stage had been set up for the band.
It was still quite quiet there, no sign of any band which was strange as the poster advertised the festival as being from 5pm to 8pm. We asked someone and was told the band would start at about 9pm. Duh! That's when our tuk tuk was coming for us.
Anyway we went back to one of the smaller bars and had a beer while listening to their music.
Just before 9pm we wandered back up to the main road and as we got there we were instantly touted. " Tuk tuk? You want tuk tuk"?
At that very moment, much to the annoyance of them all, our driver arrived, bang on 9pm. We jumped sbousrd and sped off back to our accommodation.
It was a good night out, just wish we could
have heard some of the live music but by all accounts, from what we heard after, it wasn't up to much.
One thing though, we certainly enjoyed the food!
