Last year was the first trip back to India since the Covid escape of March 2020. This fall as I told Taylor my plans for this year's trip, he said "but I've been to India 4 times, can we explore somewhere new?" I was unimpressed at first with his disappointment in returning to my homeland! But when I realized he used the word explore, I knew this was exactly the kind of child I was attempting to raise...one who was excited by new adventures and discovering all the world had to offer. He also asked to skip traveling altogether and just visit his family in Vancouver....so, after many conversations and many feels and many flight searches, I landed on a 2 month trip to Vancouver, Thailand and India. Some new mixed in with family time and ... read more

Catching up on the action from yesterday. Just got down to Wednesday morning breakfast. I’m still not used to which day it is. The hotel is remodeling the bar area and the front half of the dinging area. also looks like they are adding back in those crazy nightclubs from way beck when. 6:15, and there are 3 people here. Very different. Most of the seating is in the upper deck area where we never really went. Standard good breakfast as before. Now back to yesterday….. The trip from Inchon South Korea, to Bangkok, was a bit of a blur. Video choices weren’t great and I couldn’t concentrate on my book, so I gave in to sleep, except for when I was rammed into during the meal service. We landed 15 minutes early although there was ... read more

It's four years since I last left Chiang Mai and made my way back to Herefordshire as the Covid pandemic trailed behind me from Asia to Europe. But the airport in Chiang Mai still looks the same and it didn't take long to get to the taxi rank and to be on my way across town to Baan Songjum. I was greeted by Nui and Kung who were wondering what had happened to me, and I was starving because there was no food on my budget airline, delayed flight from Singapore. Luckily for me Penn, a permanent resident at Baan Songjum, was just off out on his scooter to buy some supper and he brought back a Pad Thai for me. It's at least 10 years since I first found my way to Baan Songjum and ... read more

I headed back to the beaches from Khao Sok, but this time to Southern Thailand and to the Krabi province. My first stop was Ao Nang. A key town in the province, this is a very popular town for beachgoers and island hoppers and I found it too crowded for my liking. But the sunsets and the night market were definitely noteworthy. I did use the time to gorge on some Indian food, talk to some tourists from China and learnt a lot about the country. Next stop for me was Koh Lanta, an island district with about 30,000 population. The setting was perfect for my last few days in Thailand, swimming in the calm waters (though lot of jellyfish around) and just lazing on the beach. And it's here that I finally got to see ... read more

After relaxing at a beach for long, I headed to Khao Sok National Park. Khao Sok is a small town which has become popular because of the national park. Spread over 700 Square KM, the national park is a rainforest hosting a large number of species and is estimated to be one of the oldest rainforests in the world (160 Million years), possibly older than the Amazon Rainforests. I was staying only a couple of nights and focused on the Cheow Lan Lake. Spread over 180 Square KM, this manmade lake came into being as a result of a dam constructed in the 1980s to produce electricity and provide irrigation/fishing to the surrounding region. I took a long boat tour on the lake with other tourists (this is a popular tour, I had about 40 people ... read more

From Bangkok, I headed to Ko Phayam. As I have been to Thailand before, my goal for this trip has been to explore the less explored places and Ko Phayam fit the bill well. After a flight to Ranong and a short speedboat ride to the island, I arrived at this idyllic island. Close to the Myanmar border, Ko Phayam is an island of about 17 Square KM and a population of about 600+. And tourist population in season ranges from 100-200. My first impression upon arriving at the place of stay was everyone seems to know each other, even the tourists. And the reason was simple, tourists end up staying long here. I had initially planned 4 nights of stay including couple of days where I had to do some work calls. But one look ... read more

I visited Bangkok to meet family and friends. When you travel long, it's a great experience when you can spend some time with your loved ones in another part of the world. I have been to Bangkok before, so this time I wasn't covering any of the usual tourist spots. On the first day, I was fortunate enough to go to a rooftop bar in one of Bangkok's iconic places and the views of the city at night were majestic. The next day, my family and friends treated me to an Indian (with slight Thai fusion) meal at a Michelin 2 star rated restaurant. Without doubt, my best meal in last few years and for the rest of this trip (am assuming). Next day, we did do a bit of touristic places like Wat Arun and ... read more

Everyone has heard about the devastating tsunami of 2004 in S.E.Asia. Koh Phi Phi island was one of the most badly hit places with much loss of life. Due to the geography of the island the wave hit on two sides, many of the small bars and bungalow resorts were destroyed. We visited the island in 2006 and saw how things were gradually returning to normal. Recently we've heard from many tourists how busy Phi Phi island has become now and wanted to see for ourselves. We did return last year for a day trip but due to the ferry breaking down, and us being stuck out at sea for almost two hours, we didn't have a lot of time to explore and one of the things I had really wanted to do was climb back ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Kanchanaburi February 2nd 2024

From Ayutthaya, I took a minivan to Kanchanaburi, the city that was made famous because of the movie The Bridge On The River Kwai. I was visiting for more than the bridge, my main aim was to visit the Erawan Falls. A 7 level waterfall with emerald green waters, this is named after Airavat, the Elephant that Lord Indra in Hindu mythology rides. A 1.5 hour bus ride each way from Kanchanburi and a 45 minute hike upto the 7th level are completely worth the experience, especially given that you can just jump into the pools and cool down. Visiting the Burma Railway and the bridge was a must do and I did go and see them, though it's a somber experience, if you remember that nearly half the prisoners of war who built this died ... read more
