Hello All So we've arrived back in Bangkok and it feels a little like going home. Quite nice to have all the home comforts back but still miss those sandy beaches. Now out of sensitivity i have sent this early saturday morning in England so all you workers reading this won't feel too depressed. Since last blog we did Scuba Diving in Ko Tao (just an introductory one off) but was quite cool. Went down to a depth of 12 metres and saw lots o fish, also had a nose bleed as i didn't equalize properly but all was well as i didn't even notice. Cathy as usual took it all in her stride. After Ko Tao we got first a boat and then a bus and then another boat to East Raily a beach in ... read more

APRIL FOOLS! We didn't have a lay over in Laos. I know not too funny but we had to do something for April Fools Day! (is it an apostrophe?) We touched down really late on Thursday night and rode a long bus to Khao San Rd. The backpackers road. This is where a crap load of backpackers come for easy and cheap accomodations that you can hook up at any time of night or day. So it's good for those flights that get you here at midnight, which is what time the international flights get here. You don't have to know Thai here because everyone speaks english, which is helpful but I was hoping we'd be forced to learn another language. We'll take time to learn some in the islands from our little phrase book that ... read more

We arrived in Bangkok, Thailand on Tuesday evening. Bangkok is very busy (like Singapore) but is much more chaotic. The traffic is much worse since the skytrain and subway are not extensive - I think they are new and they plan to expand them. There are a lot of motorcycles and tuk-tuk (three-wheeled motor vehicle taxis) as well as cars and buses. On Wednesday we walked around the part of the city we were staying and also found a bus that was going to the train station so we could buy tickets to our next destination. It was interesting to walk around in a new place. On Thusday we went to the 'Grand Palace'. This is a huge complex of buildings (the King no longer lives there). It was very impressive. Attached is a Wat (temple) ... read more

Holy crap. I know I get myself into some crazy sh** sometimes. Ok, those of you that know me can stop nodding your head in agreement already. Well, last night definitely ranks up there with some of the crazy scenarios I have found myself in. Ready? Here goes: A plan for an innocent and mild introduction to Bangkok’s nightlife at one of the city’s many pubs somehow morphed into me getting a shoulder rub in the men’s bathroom of a high society gentleman’s club and shortly thereafter, being dragged on the dance floor by one of the establishment’s many high-priced prostitutes. And yes, I was completely sober the whole time. Now, I know you’re thinking, “So, Myra. What idiotic thing did you do now to get yourself in that situation?” Well, when one moves to a ... read more

I know what you're thinking. A monk. Religious guru. Not very exciting behind the scenes. Just meditation and prayer and whatnot. WRONG! These people are really...well, cool! And how do I know this you may wonder? In Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, the Lonely Planet guide came through once again, and informed us mighty travellers about 'Monk Chat', held at a local Wat, aka a temple. Yes, that's right girls and boys, as really-bad-reality-TV-show-gone-wrong as it sounds, and as skeptical as I was to begin with (would you expect anything less from me, really?!), this turned out to be the most interesting two hours I have spent in Thailand thus far. It is what it sounds to be. A bunch of foreigners chatting to monks. But instead of them preaching to us about Buddhism, as I thought ... read more

Written March 31 at 10:15 am Saturday - We started the morning early because we needed to get more cash and a new room before checking out of our existing hotel. The 680 baht room was not so appealing the next morning when they revealed that their policy was to not show rooms before you book it. We therefore decided to book Wendy’s House even though it cost 900 baht because we really liked the vibe there and they had wireless internet access. We wanted to get everything resolved quickly so that we could go to the Chatuchak Weekend Market, a huge weekend event in Bangkok. The market contains over 8,000 vendors and is divided into 26 sections. It was very easy for us to get there because our new location is a block from the ... read more

We all woke up about 8am, with healthy hang overs to suit. It was yet another overcast and stupidly humid day... hovering around 30 degrees and 100% or so I guess. We woke to some news that unfortunatly Hamish had had about 500 euro's stolen from his room, likely by the cleaners. He headed off to make a police report, while the rest of us decided to head to some markets that Trav knew of via a friend of his. We jumped on the sky train, which is an elevated rail that took us through town. We wound up at the markets in the middle of another thunderstorm, which thankfully stopped about 5 minutes later. Unfortunatly, the ground was saturated, and the sun came out. This just made things even more humid. I was in at ... read more

Hey, after checking out of our guesthouse in Au Nang we decided to check out a nearby beach that you had to get a longtail boat to, Hat Ton Sai. It only took 10 minutes by boat to get there but the differences from Ao Nang were apparent as soon as we docked. The beach had a row of about 10 bars on it, all relatively quiet and the beach was dominated by huge cliffs, parts of which overhanged onto the beach (Very useful if you want to stay in the shade!) Ton Sai seems to be a haven for rock climbers and on the cliffs you could see bits of harness and peg holes where theclimbers had been. We checked into some bungalows about 5 minutes into the mainaland from the beach and then headed ... read more

The Steaming Jungles of Phang-Nga, Thailand By Greg McCann Better known for its limestone mountain-studded bay where scenes from the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun were shot, inland Phang-Nga, in southern Thailand, is home to some of this country's most pristine national parks. Unscathed by last year's tsunami and only an hour and a half from Phuket International Airport, this sleepy backwater offers perhaps the best -and most easily accessible- jungle trekking in the The Land of Smiles. The town of Phang-Nga itself is only a launching pad for the parks in the area. Most visitors come here to join boat tours of Ao Phang-Nga National Marine Park, and certainly, that ought to be seen, but stick around for a few days and your options for going inland are spellbinding. First off, ... read more

Lloyd: 'Dean, look over there!' Dean: "I know man, this is like the secret island of all beautiful women" Lloyd: "Well said, well said" The women were pretty jaw dropping and it did not help that women were not allowed to wear tops on the beach either (i did not see any signs saying that but there must have been some somewhere) Back to reality............. AHH yes, sitting on the ferry from the coast to the Thai island of Kho Phangan I got that feeling I always get when going to a new island. A feeling of excitement mixed with contentment. Islands' are great because you are stuck there so you don't feel too pressurized to do anything but nothing and also it's YOURS to explore and conquer. Spent the first night in a bungalow on ... read more
