I have now been in Bangkok for nearly 3 days and while the first day kinda dragged, yesterday just seems a blur!!! Given that Dan and I really hadn't planned anything beyond our arrival and departure from Bangkok, the last couple of days has been largely spent in internet cafes researching our travel options!! My first day was pretty dull, hanging out, getting over any jet lag, researching travel options and trying to sort out my roaming (so that Dan could contact me when he arrived). Yesterday, once I finally managed to locate Dan (via email) we caught up at Hostel Thailand, on Silom Road, just down from the infamous Pat Pong (as my taxi driver told me - "Pat Pong - Lady of the Night"). We promptly found an Irish Pub to have a beer ... read more

We have been through Bangkok several times already. Bangkok is a transportation hub and a place to run errands and do other tasks. Since it is so hot, we've been to see several movies that were much better than the wretched "Frankenfish." We saw "The Constant Gardener," "A History of Violence," and "Crash." All were great films, but "Crash" was fantastic and completely deserving of its recent Best Picture Oscar. We highly recommend all these movies, especially "Crash," though the extensive violence in "A History of Violence" might be disturbing for some viewers. We only need to see one more movie at this theatre to get a free ticket. Many of you may have noticed on the news that were massive protests in Bangkok before the elections on April 2. The protesters demanded that the Prime ... read more

Here are some pictures from the Bangkok Auto Show that we attended last weekend. Lots of pretty models. Lots of pretty cars too. Both boys were pretty excited to take a look at the Subaru WRX. It is C's favorite car by far....every one that is ever on the street is pointed out to us with much excitement! He also thought that ANYTHING that had flames painted on it was ultra cool. In other news, we are off to the states this weekend for our yearly visit. One week in New Jersey, one week in Phoenix. We are really looking forward to it - though not the 18 hour flight to get there! ... read more

How do you love and hate somewhere at the same time? We arrived in Malaysia again, this time with more open minds about actually trying to enjoy this country that we had disliked so much because of the people. At the airport in Bali we met a guy called Jack, from England, who we ended up befriending and stayed the night with us to share the cost. After arriving at around 8pm, we took the 9RM ($4.50) bus from the new Low Cost Carrier Terminal into KL Sentral. Air Asia have a new terminal that is so bad, it has not enough seats, NO ATM, and planes seem to be delayed for even longer! Stupid Air Asia. Anyway, we caught a taxi to a hostel that some friends recommended, although we decided not to stay there, ... read more

So....Wednesday morning (28th March)......another early start and on the road again (or water - or both!) The weather is looking brighter! Our 'truck' to pick us up from the guesthouse was a little late though so, can you all believe, us two were actually waiting for someone to pick us up (we are running remarkably on time so far on this trip!!!) We waited for half an hour and finally got picked up at 9.30am. Amusingly, we were then driven 2 minutes walk down the road to the pier. It wasn't amusing at the time! We then had to wait for the coach to pick us up to take us to the main pier the other side of town (to get our boat). It was organised chaos - which is becoming a familiar sight for us ... read more

So we are now in our Eco-houses. I am in the Blue Eco-house which I thought was a bit poo to begin with as all the people I met in Bangkok are in the Lemon house. No worries though as we are staying with some Dutch people whio all seem great and a Belgium girl who is just full of life. So we have spent the last few days getting to know each other, learning Thai and generally seeing the surrounding area of Singburi, it's a great little village with no tourists anywhere just the crazy yet very respectful Thai! The food is all vegetarian and the cook Dee is amazing, he especially likes me as I fixed his motorbike yesterday, so the food is flowing and I am loving it! We are learning Thai which ... read more

Ok I made it to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. Lucky for me I got my passport sent to Bangkok in a day so it was all cool. And of course I had to purchase another camera. Man someday I'll have pictures all over the world with all of the cameras I'm sure I will lose. Chiang Mai is such a relief from the hell I call Bangkok. Nobody seems to really like Bangkok except for the American students who are just on a short holiday. I think they are more interested in the sleazy side of Bangkok though. So far I've had no time to rest. Today I went to Myanmar (formerly Burma) to get another 30 day Thai visa. It's easy, you take a bus and then pay 5 bucks to cross into Myanmar. ... read more

Finally got to big old Bangkok town :) Flight was veeeeeeeeeeeeery long but definately worth it. the weather is really really hot and humid, actually its probably 100% humidity at the moment as it is absolutely chucking it down. Everything is as cheap as expected. Went to a bar yesterday and the bar staff tried to sell us San Miguel... quite funny! still it is only 100 baht (1 quid 50) for a biiiiiiiiiiig Singha beer. We get some pics soon... gonna go for some dinner now. Pad Thai with egg is the flavour of the week so far, basically egg fried noodles with a spring roll. only 30 Baht, which is not more than 20 pence like everything else over here. Gotta go now, there is a scary bug next to the computer.... arrggghhh! Can't ... read more

Our next destination was the Thale Ban National Park which caused some doubt before we even set off, with neither of us wanting to ask how to get to the Taliban Park until we were assured that that is the correct pronunciation (I pictured some sort of an extremist theme park with rides like a suicide bomber rollercoaster etc). Once we were sure that our pronunciation wasn't going to cause offence we started trying to barter for a songthaew (pick-up truck with two benches put in the back) ride. During an animated discussion involving myself, Monique, the driver and the guesthouse owner using a mixture of sign-language and pigeon English the driver started making a stamping movement on his hand. After some moments of confusion we decided that we were being asked if we had the ... read more

And so arrived the most significant milestone of my trip so far. Up until now, I had been travelling out to the most far-flung corners of the globe (well far-flung if you're using Glasgow as a starting point) but when I arrived in Auckland airport I was officially on my way home. Not that it was time to book a table at La Vita and put the Irn Bru on ice just yet; I still had 3 months in south-east Asia, a rendez-vous with China and the small matter of the Trans-Siberian railway ahead of me, but in the manner of someone waking up on the morning of their 40th birthday, there was a certain 'bloody hell, that's half of it over already' in my step as I boarded my flight to Bangkok on to a ... read more
