Today is the day when we leave Bangkok for the beauty of Thailand's Islands. First stop is Phuket, which should be pretty nice. There we're going to get certified to scuba dive and do a couple of day trips to some nearby islands. After that we head northeast to Ko Tao and Ko Pha Ngan. Should be pretty nice. We spent the last 4 days in Chiang Mai, which was awesome and definitely a place we'll head back to in the future. It's a smaller town of a couple hundred thousand and it's got a lot of charm. We stayed in a really nice guesthouse called Ben's for a grand total of $5 a night. It was great and they even helped us out with a trek. We wanted to do a multi-day deal but we ... read more

Apologies for the slack attitude to my little online diary. If it is any consolation, I haven't updated my personal journal for three weeks either. I have been in Thailand for more than two weeks now (three weeks? Kind of losing track of time). Bangkok freaked me out a little bit. I am aware that there is plenty of interesting stuff to see and do, but I decided to put off exploring the city until my return (I fly home from Bangkok) and get the hell out. So I took the night bus (what joy, what fun) down to Ko Phan Ngan, an island off the south east coast, made famous for its ability to keep the entire S.E. Asian drug industry in business whenever there happens to be a full moon. I didn't have the ... read more

So, Chance forgot to put this in the blog and I wanted to add it since it was pretty interesting. We made it back from Chaing Mai and headed to the other side of Bangkok to pick up our Indian visa. We had to drop our passports off and come back after a 4 hour wait so they could staple the visa into the ol passport. Why it takes 4 hours to do this, I don't know. Anyway, we sat in the air conditioning of the embassy wondering what to do when we decided to check out this neighborhood bar boasting happy hour from 10am to 6pm. Nice. We had a couple of beers in a completely empty bar. Shortly after our arrival we found out what keeps this bar afloat. It's a front. It's a ... read more

Happy Easter Everyone!!! Koh Lipe - our last stop in Thailand. It took us hours and hours to get there. The minibus that we got from Koh Lanta took 2 hours to get to Trang. Then, from Trang, we had to get another minibus that took another 2 hours to the pier at Pak Bara. We then got on the ferry to Lipe that took 5 hours!!! There is no pier at Lipe so the boats don't dock. Instead, longtail boats come to meet the boat a little way offshore. This involved more tricky maneuvers - as we were clambering from boat to boat!!! Koh Lipe (pronounced Ko Lee Pae) is one of a group of islands that fall within the Koh Turatao range of islands, but falls just outside of Koh Turatao Marine National Park. ... read more

Well our three months in Asia have come to an end. We worked out we've spent over 16 months of our lives living in Asia - that is crazy!!! We've had an amazing, action packed 3 months in Asia. But truth be told, we're rather excited to be heading to an English speaking country.. (I was very excited to get to Australia, my first time ever! - Sarah) So what will we miss?; Sunshine everyday... cheap food, cheap accommodation, cheap beer... the friendly natives (some people have been very kind)... nature - jungle, mountains, beaches, beautiful.. So what won't we miss?; Hearing the phrases 'Same same but different' & 'No money, no honey'... people spitting in the street... touristed out Thais... traffic and pollution... dirty travellers, hippy travellers (wash your hair... absolutely no reason for dirty ... read more

Most of the population of Northern Thailand is Buddhist. Buddhist temples in Thailand are called Wats. We went to visit one in Chang Mai that is called Doi Suthep (Doi sounds like “toy” only with a “d” and Suthep is pronounced more like Sutep) All around the temple walls are depictions of scenes from the life of the Buddha. In the center people light candles and offer roses at the feet of a Buddha statue for prayer. ... read more

Hi again everybody. Sofie and I are about to go our separate ways. She has a visa for the People's Republic of China and I for Vietnam. We've tried to reconcile ourselves to travelling separately on our journey but since we'll meet again in Saigon in a month or so it's really not so long at all. So to Bangkok. Every time I visit the city I am more and more suprprised. Sure it's a big noisy Asian Megacity but it has it's charms. We spent a fair bit of time being choked by traffic fumes but taking the river ferries from Banglamphu via Wat Po and onto the Skytrain gives a different perspective. We met up with another Warren and a Sarah too in Calcutta Airport and spent many an hour eating lunch while they ... read more

Hello readers, It's a hard life & no doubt everyone in dear old blighty is sick of hearing about my travels in the Tropics....how hot it is...how I've found more beautiful beaches....how healthy my diet is...blah blah blah! I am having a top time though and pinching myself as I go. I'm now on the island of Kho Tao (Turtle island; but haven't seen a turtle yet). I left Phuket, what seems like ages ago with 5 of my teacher buddies and headed to Kho Phi Phi intially where we stayed a couple of nights and danced until dawn. We also took a long-tail boat trip to Phi Phi Leh which is a smaller island with no hotels and has the most beautiful beach ever (the one that's in the film "The Beach"). From there we ... read more
