Phew! I'm in the air-conditioned luxury of an internet caff just across from the hotel; the same internet caff where I nearly fell off my seat last night when checking my emails, for an elephant wandered past the window. Now, I know there ARE elephants in Bangkok, but I kinda figured they might be in a quiet part ( Bangkok + quiet = oxymoron), rather than in amongst the four star hotels, cars and mopeds. It all seemed perfectly normal then when later I was crossing the road and a man was patiently holding an elephant back from crossing until the traffic had stopped, as somebody would restrain a dog on a leash in the UK. Mad, barmy, Bangkok. I knew I had hit Asia in Bangkok airport toilet. It's that throat-clearing sound that is specific ... read more

I survived my 3rd and final winter in Japan. And I don’t use the word ‘survive’ loosely, it was ridiculously cold this year. My constantly frozen fingers and toes inside my apartment; pumping and breathing-in kerosene, daily; defrosting my olive oil before using it, only heating one room at a time; warming up my PJs with the electric blanket before bed and lest I forget, the unheated schools. After enduring all that (and more…) for the third time, I thought a little trip to the beach would make everything better. What do ya know? I was right;) Off to Thailand I went… Last March, Vancouverite Christine Ngan and I traveled to Singapore and Malaysia together, and knowing we could stand each other during traveling, we set off for Thailand in each other’s company on March ... read more

We took a bus from Chiang Mai to Sukhotai. It was about 6 hours and not very comfortable - we will try to use the train in future. In Sukhotai we went to the Sukhotai Historical Park. This is the remains of the 'old city' which is about 700 years old. It is very large, we rented a bike to get around the park. It was very impressive (but very hot). We left Sukhotai this morning (1 hour by bus) to get to Phitsanuluk - we are resting here today and taking a train tomorrow to Lopburi. -Matt... read more

Hi everyone. First of all, I am totally lying about the Diary Date. As most of you know, I have been back for a few months now. Back in the swing of things with city life but still savoring memories of our 2 month trip to SE Asia. Anyways, rather than re-creating the trip, I have chosen to take my e-mail excerpts and share them with those of you have seen them already and those who have not. This time, there are pictures so enjoy! E-mail #1 Subject: Hello from Thailand Sorry if you got this twice...seems like the first one didn't make it from my end...anywho, here goes: So hello there...long time no communicate! It has been about 5 days since we left Vancouver and it feels like so much has happened. We are currently ... read more

Esta es la segunda parte. Quieres empezar por la primera? This is the second part. Do you want to begin by the first part?

DAY 6 Feeling more positive today, even ate more of the breakfast then I normally do. I have noticed how skinny some of the people are who work here, even Tan Dhammavidu. Khun Reinhard who told me off yesterday has the skinniest feet and ankles I have ever seen. I am sure that I have lost weight too. Looking at my desert bowl (instead of fruit) it looked like a petri dish used in biology class with all bacteria all over it. I am sure some people think I am insane as I sometimes laugh out loud when I am thinking of things to keep myself amused. It probably looks like I am going insane. Here at the hermitage when we have our yummy delicious 2 meals a day we have to wait for everyone to ... read more

Went to Lopburi today, this is home of the monkeys. They rome the streets freely as humans and sit in lamp posts drinking bottles of beer. It's so funny but a little scary as those buggers are nasty. They can really get violent and I wern't hanging around to find out how a monkey bite feels. Great day though. Everyone is starting to come out of there shell a little so the group is really getting on. We went to a Festival like show for the princesses birthday. It was a little boring but due to the cultural side of it we stayed and watched it and actually got a little involved towards the end!... read more

Finally...That Cocktail! Horay for Thailand! Our two weeks in one of the most amazing beach destiniations will be brought to you by both Yvette (week 1) and Dom (week 2).. Travel & Bangkok So we probably would have failed the auditions for the Amazing Race. The reality TV show where a dozen couples or friends are flung from one exotic destination to another, with challenges and activities along the way, all aiming not to come last, or else elimination from the race will ensue.... Firstly, we arrived at Hong Kong airport for 2 hours intransit, but I'd left my Hong Kong dollars in my checked-in luggage; we booked our Bangkok accommodation so last minute, non of the last-minute web sites were capable of taking our booking; and then to top it all off Day 1 of ... read more

We took the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. We didn't see much from the train because it was night time but we are going to make our way back south more slowly. We stayed in Chiang Mai for a few days. It is an interesting place with lots to see and is much less chaotic than Bangkok. We went on a trip out of the city where we rode on an Elephant through part of a park and saw an elephant show. We also went on a bamboo raft along a river. We also went to a class in Chiang Mai where we learnt about Thai cooking. - Matt ... read more
