The first time I ever set foot in Hua Hin was in 1994. It was on one of those family holidays that soon became an annual tradition: we'd pack up from wherever we were in the world to spend a month on the beach. It was great. The venue of choice was a guest house of sorts called the Juniper Tree, frequented by many European families who lived in countries all over Asia and seemed to congregate in Hua Hin on their annual reprieve. My earliest memories consist of a daily ice cream allowance and the 'couch family sand - sculpture extravaganza', whereby we would construct life size sand figures to the awe and admiration of passersby. We could navigate through the small alleyways of the local day market and were undoubtedly the town's mini golf ... read more

Feeling much better after a good nights sleep, settled into Hua Hin really easily, ended up staying four nights at my good Hotel, Subhamitra. Had a horse ride on the beach, lazed by the pool, posted a couple parcels, sorted a phone card, changed some traveller's cheques, ate well at various sea food restaraunts, particularly good one on the pier, with the water chopping underneath me, very dodgy looking wooden pier too. It is a shame that it has rained such alot here, but definately worth the visit, glad I stopped off here. Yvonne, there are some beautiful colourful flowers out here at the moment, I would not have a clue what they are called, but I guess its because of the weather, lots of rain bringeth nice flowers.... Jaye, I made the mistake of buying ... read more

Last day in Bangkok - Hua Hin Thank you all for the messages and comments on my blog, please keep it coming, its great to hear from you all!! Sunday 16th July Last night I had a face massage in the Shell garage, for approx 3GBP, 200Bht. It was a fab massage, but I had troubles relaxing, as there was no place safe to leave my bag. Ended up strapping it to my leg, much to the amusement of the Masseurs. Its really strange a Shell garage by day selling fuel, and a massage parlour/ cafe by night. Booked on a trip for last day to the Floating Market, River Kwai, tiger temple, Met 3 girls from Ireland on hols and Dermot, a fellow traveller (also from Cork), the day turned out to be a drag ... read more

I'm sure none of you would ever expect this from me... but the first free weekend, just guess where I went?! yea, the beach. It was incredible. We took a three hour bus ride to "Huan Hin Beach" The ride there and back cost 7dollars. Yea, doesnt get much better than that. We stayed in a family guest house/hotel. They took such good care of us. I continue to be amazed of the hospitality of Thais. Well the beach was very pretty, but the water was what I loved. The ocean felt like bath water it was so warm. I couldnt believe it. We spend hours and hours just bobbing around. These random locals gave us a free ride on a banana boat, so that was exciting. Then we went out to their night market. It ... read more

After Reluctantly leaving Ko Tao, our transfer to Hue Hin went nice and smooth, we arrived early tea time. But where did we get dropped off??? We didn't know! We had our Lonely Planet and it took us a while to get ourselves orientated, we were a little out of town but once we got our bearings we checked out a few hotels and found one for 350 Baht and got booked in. The main attractions in Hue Hin seem to be the many markets, so once we showered we were straight out checking out the local night market, it was good, but then we were interupted by the England v Paraguay game so we hunted down a bar and I, Andy settled down to watch it while Melissa went browsing. It was a good market, ... read more

So it was time to farewell Vietnam, finally, and head to Thailand for a short 10 days. After an hour and a half delay in Vietnam we finally arrived in Bangkok. I think Vietnam just didnt want us to leave!!! We didn't plan to stay long in Bangkok so the next day we hopped on what seemed like a luxury bus compared to Vietnam and headed south. Our destination was Hua Hin, about 2 hours south of Bangkok. We were to stay with Daves family friend Doug and his Wife Khun Chonchica (a.k.a Poo). it was a little adventure to find his house as the bus arrived early and doug was not there to meet us. So we went of on a little walk in the rain and managed to trudge our way to their lovely ... read more

Hi all: It has been such a long time since I have written and a lot has happened since the last entry. First, for those of you who don't already know, Jim's mom had a stroke and he had to fly back to the U.S. Things were touch and go for a while, but she thankfully did survive though it will be a long road to recovery. Still, she is home now with Jim's dad, doing rehab, and has been improving quite a lot every day. Jim is back in Thailand, but will be going back to the U.S. again for a training in May and can check in on his parents during that trip. We are all planning to come back to the U.S. together on July 12th and will be back for 3 weeks, ... read more

Hello... is anybody there? Today's blog will have an educational leaning to it & less of the trivial drivel that I usually write. Just thought that I should warn you so that you can duck out now if you would rather watch some paint dry :) At the start of the week 4 of us left Khao Tao for Hua Hin; part excellent boat journey and part coach. As always when I leave somewhere it is with some sadness because there's comfort in what is familiar and a little angst about going somewhere different. So far there are no regrets as nowhere as disappointed me or been somewhere that I felt I needed to escape from. Hua Hin is quite a big town (pop. 48k) and partly with a western influence. There is a Hilton and ... read more
