After Bangkok we took the bus down to Krabi and got the boat over to Ko Phi Phi. We left Bangkok about 6pm and arrived in Phi Phi at 4.30pm the next day….sitting on a bus for 22 hours was not much fun and everywhere we stopped seemed to be full of annoying Canadian people(one in particular who had superman tatooed on his crotch, we know this as he was wearing very low slung shorts and for no other reason!!!) or huge dogs that attacked sen and tried to follow me into the toilet! Phi Phi is so beautiful, it’s where they filmed the beach so the scenery is amazing although it feels a bit like being back in Sweden as so so many Swedes! Stayed in a guesthouse belonging to Mrs Lei who basically became ... read more

Yesterday we caught the train to a little town on the coast on the Gulf of Thailand called Prachuap Khiri Kan. It is a lovely quiet town and the room we are in is pretty sweet (we have cable), though we have a fan rather than aircon as it isa little pricey. Its a brand new hostel though and is super clean. This morning we climbed a hill at the end of the bay to see the magnificent views back across the countryside and out to sea across the islands. Climbing up was pretty hard work (well for me, the locals say its 38 degrees and it feels hotter) but very much worth it. Really beautiful. And to think some dodgy touts in Bangkok tried to put us off this place (ok that is cos they ... read more

Good day all.Hope you all are well. Well , Tuesday afternoon was spent at the Tiger Temple near Kanchanaburi. In one way an amazing experience, in another, concerning. They are so quick to emphasise that the tigers are not drugged to keep them sedate, but, i have my reservations. When you see a 200 lb Tiger being sat on and manhandled by a 4 ft nothing, 3 1/2 stone thai guy you have to wonder!! Well worth the trip ,even if the girl at the ticket counter did rip me off 500 baht.-fellow backpackers be warned!!! She is very quick with those 1000 baht notes! Tuesday night was spent socialising( ha ha) with various expats/travellers and some very pleasent young thai ladies-not that sort Mop!!!!!!!!!!! Woke up early on Wednesday and on a whim packed my ... read more

Hi everyone, Sorry it's been almost two weeks since my last journal entry but our village internet connection has been down for most of the time and when we did manage to log on a few days ago we only managed to get an email out each before it crashed again. Anyway, another two weeks have passed and I can't believe I'm on my last week of my project... it really feels weird that I'm going to have to say goodbye to all the animals and friends that I've made! :-( The last two weeks have been frantic with everyone digging in and helping to finish our new bear enclosure, which will hold the 5 baby/teenage sun bears. It's been hard work as the sun has finally come out and the heat really gets unbearable at ... read more

I can't believe it's already been a month since I got here, but what a month! I've been working pretty much non-stop and have only had 1 day off so far, which means I'm due 4 days off next week and I'm planning on heading down to a beach resort for a well earned break. I'm still enjoying everyday although it does occasionally get repetitive now that I've done every job on the centre so many times but the animals are always up to their tricks and either trying to grab my water-ing can or pulling the hairs from my legs when I'm wearing shorts! (My even think about waxing!) I've spent part of this week with the Elephants again, which is still amazing every time I see them... especially when we head into the jungle ... read more

I can't believe I'm already into my fourth week... time is definitely flying! I've had a great 3rd week, which I've spent mostly in the new bear enclosure which we are building. The plan is to put 7 to 8 sun bears in one enclosure together and monitor their behaviour. The sun bears are amazing and although they look cute, apparently they have the biggest teeth and longest clews out of all the bear family so kissing and hugging a sun bear tends to be difficult! ;-) I've met some really great people so far but already a few friends that I've made are heading back home to Europe, so it's been a strange week with new people joining and others leaving! Two of the girls on the program (Laina & Kim) are American, so we ... read more

My second week has flown by and I'm really starting to feel the heat and humidity of the place! I've spent most of the week with the elephants although I've now started other duties with some of the sloth bears and gibbons. I still haven't had a day off yet but I've just booked a day off this Friday, so me and the other 3 boys on the program are heading into Hua-Hin for the Thai boxing night on Thursday followed by a pampering day on friday, which will consist of a lot of Thai and oil massages... although we've been advised to decline any offerings of 'happy endings' !? Days are still very long but I'm now getting use to getting up at 6 a.m and going to sleep at 10.30p.m although we do occasionally ... read more
