the concept of a place so swimming with rock climbers and climbing culture that you can turn up on your own and the next day be climbing with some really cool people is a new one to me, however it was very welcomed! after two months of pure site seeing, i was pretty burned out.. i guess people, human history and culture arent really my strong points when it comes to staying focused.. again when you are doing one thing every day (climbing rocks) there aren't that many different ways to write about it.. i did however meet some excellent people during my stay, and learnt from, enjoyed the company of, and laughed with some of the most generous, helpful and fun loving travelers i have met to date.. definitely very happy with my time spent ... read more

26th Woke up early and got to Railay early to search out accomodation before it got too hot, lucky enough it had decided to rain today and we booked a room at Ya Ya resort. We explored the area which isnt hard as it only took 1 hour to walk around the whole of it. Railay is a small penninsular cut off from the mainland by huge cliffs, so everything is brought in and out by long boat. We discovered Thai pancakes or roti's as they call them, they are filled either sweet or savoury and fried, damn tasty. 27th Today was almost perfect! After a breakfast of tuna and cheese roti's we hired sea kayaks for the day (500 bht for 4 hrs) we set of in overcast weather around the headland to search out ... read more

Railay is an archetypal tropical paradise. Rocky outcrops spring from dense jungle full of wildlife and surrounded by white sandy beaches, lush mangroves and a still and stunning turquoise sea. As soon as our eyes beheld it from our little longtail boat on the Andaman sea we fell in love. Our first 2 nights were spent in tree house type accommodation at yaYa resort and our third night was spent atop a steep flight of stairs in the outskirts of the jungle in a little wooden bungalow at Rapala. I loved both resorts (though resort conjures up slightly more fancy images!) but would recommend Rapala over YaYa - it's cheaper, has hammocks and is actually in the jungle. YaYa is busy and quite touristy as it's so close to the boat stop on East Railay. We ... read more

Enough!! We've loved the party town and packed beaches of of Phi Phi but its time to get some peace and quiet!! Step forward Railay: beautiful, peaceful, laid back Railay. A rock climbing mecca hemmed in between two huge jungle clad peaks. And the treasure resting below these curvacious cliffs doesn't disappoint either – chalky white sand and crystal clear water. So grand is Railays towering landscape that no large boats can get near its shore – nor can any roads be built to connect the mainland that lies beyond its rocky borders. You were stunning Phi Phi but its a silver medal I'm afraid. OK OK I will lay off the adjectives now! As you might have guessed we were quite fond of Railays charms! Of course our arrival here was not quite as smooth ... read more

So we stayed another week in Krabi and have decided to stay put until we need to go back to Bangkok for our flight out to Bali. It’s nice and relaxed here and after the last week we need a week to recover!! Whilst I was diving to the depths Mark was looking into the Rock Climbing on Railay. It is world renowned for its climbing and although Railay is not an island it can only be reached by boat. So as this is something Mark would like to carry on with when we return home he decided to look into the 3 day course rather than just a one day taster. So after looking into it he decided to go on the course with a private instructor - less people means more climbs and the ... read more

After a quick stop over in Bangkok Airport between flights we arrived in Krabi to a cloudy welcome! Unlike Chiang Mai our hosts picked us up and transferred us via car and Long Boat to Railay. The initial view that greeted us didn't exactly fill us with joy, but we soon realised that we were going in through the tradesman's entrance, also known as East Railay! East Railay is a backpackers haven and a 'flash-packers' hell. Full of roughly constructed bars, restaurants and budget hotels, all fronted by a forest of mangroves. West Railay on the other hand has hotels I'm happy to dwell in and a beach that shouts Thailand, long, arced and with tall cliff mounds at either end. On the other side of one of the cliffs was a beach offered the most ... read more

We finally decided to head over to Tonsai beach for some DeepWaterSolo climbing. So we took a boat from Ko Lanta to Krabi. A bus from Krabi to Ao-nang and another boat from there to Tonsai. Unfortunately our timing was bad (surprised?):) So we ended up renting a private longtail boat and a climbing guide. We signed up for a some warm-up climbing and walked the slippery scenic route to Railay beach and phra-nang bay. Beautiful place and nowadays a great climbing spot. I visited this place 15 years back and still remember the shrine for the water Princess in the small caves as well as the scenery. Much more people there now though ;) The Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nok, reveals a more recently discovered inner Princess Cave or Tham Phra Nang Nai, ... read more

Our last night in bangkok consisted of a bit too much drinking with the yanks, irish and southampton guys before a much needed lie in! we arranged a bus to ayuthya but due to flooding changed to head south towards krabi. Bangkok was sleazy and full of scams but if you keep your wits about you and barter a good deal, its a lot of fun and a real experience. id recommend two days maximum! next stop for us was a 12 hour bus journey to krabi (we were told). in reality after 7 hours on a lovely air con bus we stoppped and got put onto another bus (less comfy) for 7 hours. then we were taken off again and had to wait an hour for a mimi-bus (not comfy at all) for two ... read more
