We both decided there wasn’t much more to explore in Aonang and so headed for a beach called Raily. The guide book recommended Raily for its stunning sunset and its rock climbing. The water was too choppy so get into a long tail boat on the beach so those of us waiting jumped into a van and headed for what they called a ‘port’. This was most defiantly NOT a port it was a walk way of concrete that then went into rocks that you had to clamber across to bored the boat! Image that with a backpack on your back and a rucksack in your arms! I was nervous about going in the choppy sea as it was and just flung myself to the side of the boat and Matt cocked my leg over, I ... read more

We haven't managed to write a blog for a while, as we've been in Myanmar (Burma) - where communication is tough to say the least. So, we're a little behind!! Before getting into the wonders of Myanmar, here's our Thailand blog... The only flight between Delhi and Bangkok was at 3.30am!! So, we took it and arrived in Bangkok on 24th June. From Bangkok we got a bus straight to Pattaya to see my dad, where we had our first 'Western meal' for a very long time.....ham, eggs and chips! We spent 4 days in Pattaya, which was great as we got to see my dad and Som, and eat some lovely Thai food. After Pattaya, we flew to Krabi town, and from there took a longtail boat to Railay. Railay's part of the mainland, but ... read more

For the last week we have been based in Krabi province on the Andaman coast, in the South of Thailand. Sun, sea and sand have been the main theme of the week with lots of relaxation. A welcome break after 5 weeks on the road. Railay Our first point of call was Railay Island. Getting there was the usual facade. Little long tail boat, rough waters and once again a wet bum! However the boat journey was worth every ounce of water as Railay is my idea of heaven and I immediately fell in love with the place. Gorgeous beaches, stunning limestone cliffs and a jungle clad interior which was as far as I am concerned an adventure playground waiting to be explored. The backpacker scene and accommodation wasn't bad either, although maybe a bit on ... read more

Sawadee mis amigos! Guess what I did...more cool stuff! After the flurry of Bangkok and the onslaught of Phuket, Kristi and I were in the mood for something with a mellow nature vibe. This led us to a place called Railey in Krabi (Tonsai to be more precise). This wonderful town is known all over the world for having some very excellent rock climbing. Although not an island, it very much feels like one as it is surrounded by impassable mountains and cliffs that cannot be accessed by vehicle. This is good news as it means there are no cars or motorbikes to honk or sell you transport. The longtail boat ride into the area was immediately inspiring. Dramatic limestone crags and pinnacles exploded directly out of the water and reached towards the sky. Each of ... read more

boats, catamarans, minivans, tuk tuks, canoes, motorbikes, escalators, lifts, buses, and more of all the above. the last of our tales: after one more day, hiking and beaching in phi phi don (climbed a high and incredible hike to a viewpoint, where you can see both sides of the island), we took mid-sized boat to railey, which is a remote beach area on the south-western tip of thailand, only reachable by boat. railey is just as spectacular as phi phi, only with far less people, and far less development. there's the east side and the west side, separated by about a 3-5 minute walk. the best beaches on either side, are framed by giant limestone cliffs. of course there's the obligatory white sands and warm tourquoise water. we caught the first of the (as the book ... read more

Breakfast was at 9 AM and we said farewell to our friends from Manchester, England who were headed to Phi Phi and then on to Malaysia and Indonesia on their honeymoon. We caught our longtail at 9:30 AM whicch met a taxi at Ao Nang to take us to the airport. The 12:05 PM flight was uneventful, and on time, which got us to Bangkok at 2:15 PM. We picked up ouir baggage and then checked it in immediately for the 3:55 PM flight to Saigon. We had just enough time for lunch...spagetti and mangoes and sticky rice, what a combination. I was a bit concerned whether the advance approval letter we obtained from Vietnam-visa would work, but the Air Asia agent told us that many passengers used this document to get a visa when they ... read more

5 June (Friday) - The weather wasbetter today so I headed to Pranang Beach to get some better pictures of a sunny beach. Will had suffered sunburn from our day of snorkeling at Phi Phi, so spent most of the day in our room. I spent most of the morning there and then headed back for a dip in the pool before lunch. Perhaps this is a good time to talk about some of the people I met. The more interesting we those with kids, and still weren't constrained in their desire or ability to travel. One Danish couple had been to Vietnam and Thailand three years earlier after their first child was born. They had two months of maternity leave and one month of vacation, so decided to travel those three months in Southeast Asia. ... read more
