Another early morning start, as we packed our bags and left the island of Koh Tao catching a Ferry to Koh Samui. We were still with the Welshies who were also heading to Koh Samui for a couple of days as well. As we were discussing on the Ferry whereabouts we were going to stay, a very camp Thai man complete with a bright pink shirt approached us about staying at his family hotel. It was set right on the beach and was “cheap cheap”, so we decided to go for it. The hotel itself was located on the Mae Nam beach on the north coast of the island. We spent the rest of the day getting used to our new surroundings, before deciding to head out to Koh Samui’s metropolis a place called Chwang. The ... read more

Decided to sit down and write this entry as we are currently in the middle of a thunderstorm so there isn’t much else to do! After getting Holly back fromLaos, we spent one night in Ayuthaya, visiting all the temples that the old capital ofThailandhas to offer its tourists. There were some very spectacular sights, particularly the first temple that we saw at sunset on our first day there. Unfortunately, Ayuthaya is one of the places that was worst affected by the flooding back when I first arrived in Thailand and much of the area of the temple was sectioned off as the authorities are still not sure quite how much damage has been caused. All the water has obviously gone now, but there may be unknown structural damage. It was a bit of a disappointment ... read more

After we checked into our room at Diamond Cave, there was only one place we were heading - The Beach! Walking Street will get you to West from East in ten minutes via a partially paved path. Look out for monkeys on your way! Truthfully we were a bit underwhelmed with West Beach. Don't get us wrong - it was gorgeous. But pictures made it seem WAY bigger than it was, and it was quite crowded. Perhaps this was the first sign that we have been to a LOT of beaches (Hawaii & all over the Caribbean). We started to feel immune to beautiful beaches - but we think we would have appreciated this beach a LOT more had it been less crowded. ... read more

Dear family and friends....it has been too long. This, of course, is due to the lack of internet service, not from laziness:-) And, it is about time that we discuss food from our travels, as it is one of the key ingredients in reminding us that we are in Asia- at least while on Tonsai beach (that, and the assortment of mispelled English words meandering about), as Tonsai and Railay are mostly comprised of climbers, backpackers, and resort go-ers. Then we'll continue to indulge in a quick travel update. FOOD Let's dive right into the deliciousness: First of all, it is important to note how food is served: fork and spoon, sans knife. Naturally, we fumble around cutting what needs cutting with our spoon, as it is typically in our knife hand, and use the opposing ... read more

Hello again! Sorry for the long silence, but internet on the beach has been anything but reliable the past week. We are, however, alive and well and sending love back home. In our jungle/beach excursion, we have learned that like Texas, everything is bigger in the jungle; the leaves and fruits on the trees, the hooting morning birds, the insects and spiders (I had one on my shoulder, to my suprise, as big as my palm!), the limestone cliffs, and the mosiquitos (more in mass than actual size). I also saw a lizard that was about 4 feet long and THIS BIG around! It was awesome. Furthermore...the pests. Instead of squirells, there are monkeys. Now, at first, they are definitely a noted pleasure to observe. I particularly enjoy watching them groom each other: one patiently sitting ... read more

Things I associate with Railay: beautiful beaches, no a/c, electricity from only 6pm-6am, Canadians, even more Canadians, chilled out vibe, kissing, no toilet paper, sleeping on the floor, monkeys, over priced boat shuttles, paradise and semi-friendly Thai's. This place is absolute paradise, there is getting round that. I just had a few unfortunate situations. We found our accommodation in Hat Ton Sai, a small place a short way along the beach from the main town. The only way to get there was an overpriced boat shuttle a semi-climb up and down steep rocks or wading through water (something that would prove problematic for the rest of our stay there.) Our hut was 1.50 pounds per night - it wasn't the best but it was still comfortable. We had no a/c, the fan and electricity only came ... read more

Ton Sai has been amazing. I ended up staying for two weeks by the time it was all said and done. The beginning was a little rocky (no pun intended). Unfortunately, I was craving Pizza and ended up with food poisoning that put me out of climbing for 4 days, but I was lucky enough to meet some people who checked in on me, it means a lot when you are traveling alone believe me. There was even an awesome group of girls who knew Acupuncture and treated me. I'm convinced they did wonders for me, cause the next day I was recovering smoothly :) After the nightmare that was food poisoning I was feeling better and ready to climb. My routine ended up being, wake up around 8:30 AM, grab some breakfast, put the iPod ... read more

Finally we are on our way to Krabi, or actually Ton Sai, where we've already wanted to go a few days ago. So after a 3 hour bus ride to Krabi, another 40 minutes taxi trip to Ao Nang and a 15 minutes boat trip to Ton Sai we are there. On the beach we have no difficulty, as always, to find someone who can show us a bungalow. This time however we are surprised that the bungalow they offer us is only 200 baht (approx. 5Euro) a night. That would be the cheapest we had so far. So we jump on some sort of motorbike and a friendly, slightly stoned Thai guy is driving us around (while my bum is almost killing me sitting on this vehicle). He first showed us his own bungalows which ... read more

1st things 1st I’m glad that we actually gave Railay a chance… the Similan Islands are a tough act to follow for darn near any beach destination but Railay drew the short straw and initially got a poor reception from us… I would say it initially earned a firm C-… to set the scene: Railay has two separate crescent shaped bays with a sliver of land in between them, one side is the “backpacker” side and the other side is the “Resort” side… class warfare at its finest. We arrived on the “backpacker” side in a longtail boat and found that the backpacker side did not actually have a beach at all… the boat pulled into mangroves and because the bay was shallow, we had to jump out of the boat into the brown water and ... read more
