HE SAID... I woke at 6am to watch the morning unfold through my lower bunk bed train window. The southern Thai landscape seems very different from the north. Large vertical hills rising out of nowhere, then flat fields full of palm, coconut, rubber and fig trees. This train was a little less steady on its tracks than the northern trains, so my sleep had been broken during the night. However, it didn’t make any difference as I felt completely refreshed, and the prospect of lazing on the beach this afternoon was very welcoming. Arriving at Surat Thani had its problems - Ren and I misjudged Pun Pin Station and jumped off the train a little too early when it stopped temporarily at traffic lights. We found ourselves alone on an empty platform in the middle of ... read more

Sunday 2-6 to Friday 2-11 After the crazy crowds of Phuket, we headed to the quiet, slow-paced beaches of Krabi. Oh my gosh, I’m in love! These are absolutely the most beautiful tropical beaches I have ever seen! (…and I’ve been to the Galapagos!) And Nick fell in love with the laid-back town. Nick got us an adorable boutique hotel in Krabi Town; not on the beach but right along the Krabi River and just outside of the hustle and bustle of town. (And just around the corner from a restaurant that serves THE best Massaman curry I have ever tasted!) Nick’s first order of business, however, was to find a bar that would show the Super Bowl at 6:30am (yup, that’s AM, people). Needless to say, I slept in and just met up with him ... read more

Another great week in Krabi. It's almost summer and the schools have weird schedules due to exams and preparation, so I asked to work in 3 different schools for these 3 weeks of teaching rather than teach only a few days/hours at Ban Aonammao where I was originally placed. I'll miss it, but I'm excited to see the differences between the schools, teachers and students. So far, the students have been shy and hesitant to speak, but they are very welcoming, eager to learn and loving. They often give hugs, kisses and little gifts that say sweet things like, "I love you" :-) Took a weekend trip to the Phi Phi Islands and saw the most colorful water, fish and sunsets yet...and the beach where "The Beach" was filmed! Bad movie, but great beach! Phi Phi ... read more

A couple of reasonable local bus journeys later and we arrived safely in Krabbi town, and we hadn’t realized how far we were from the beaches. The main attraction here was the night market, which is only on from Fri – Sun, so many locals and tourists come to sample the local delights. A stage was set up for various acts to perform, Karaoke stars ranging in both standards of performance and age, there were also a few groups of children performing street dancing. The stage looked upon a sea of tables and chairs which were surrounded by little stalls, mostly selling food. The rich aromas around the market were beautiful. There is a greater Muslim influence in south Thailand, so the food is different, we found it to be much more flavoursome and enjoyed it ... read more

Get back home little daddy, your will is a little too strong All you wanted was to ride in the saddle, but you did it with the Amazons It's alright, Daddy, oh, you better get back home... Many have tried, and many have died, riding with the Amazons So it was a rough day, and this is how it went..... I took my seat on the plane, and right when I sat down an English man sat down beside me. He was in his 30's and friendly, and we struck up a conversation. Normal travel talk like where have you been....how was that.....where are you going.....are you on holiday.........where are you from......talk about the weather there.......the normal stuff. Against the monk's teaching, somewhere towards the end of the ride my mind started working and I became ... read more

Hello/sawasdee from Thailand! I hope this finds you all well, and I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for the love and support you continuously provide. I'm writing to share my experiences and ask for your comments and help making sense of it all. I'm not sure where I'm headed, but I know it will be a smoother journey with your input and encouragement. As I learned today in teacher training, "Birds can fly because they think they can." After a warm, fun welcome in Bangkok with my friend Jenisa (pics attached), I settled into Krabi on Sunday Feb 20. For the next month I'll be living with my host mom, Pi Nong (a muslim woman from Bangkok), her two teenage sons (they don't speak English), and 3 other volunteers for Projects Abroad ... read more

South-West Thailand This is the first of a 2 part 'travel-blog' describing our time in Southern Thailand. When planning our sojourn to Myanmar, we decided to also include time in southern Thailand as we'd not been to this region before. Generally, as we live beside a globally 'world class' beach, we've not gone searching for beach locations to 'adventure'. That said, so many people give glowing reports of southern Thailand, we felt we'd be foolish to not go visit. To keep the 'blog' to a reasonable length, we've made it into 2 parts; this part which focuses on the 'south-west' part of southern Thailand - the Krabi & Ao Nang region - and a second part that centre's on the south-eastern side of southern Thailand - Nakhon Si Thammarat. As always, if you want to 'see' ... read more

On my second last day in Krabi before moving across to the other coast I took a '4 islands' boat tour, organised through the Good Dream Guesthouse (review url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g297927-d1069893-Reviews-Good_Dream_Guesthouse-Krabi_Town_Krabi_Province.htmlhere). The tour was recommended for the quality of the beaches and clarity of the water. They weren't wrong, it was easily worth doing. These small islands' beaches were still more impressive than Ao Nang Beach that I described in my last post and, though I didn't have much success when I gave snorkelling a go (I'd have to get a customised mask to accommodate my specs!), it was possible to see some of the sealife under the water from the boat. I was able to take a photo of the most distinctive ones, striped yellow and black fish - anyone know what they're called? As well as ... read more

On my last day in Penang I took the CAT to visit Fort Cornwallis and take a gander at some of the colonial buildings before trying out the asam laksa (Penang laksa, one of the island's best-known dishes) at one of the hawker centres near Chulia Street. This is a sour and mildly spicy noodle soup made out of mackerel, prawn paste and tamarind. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was very nice and I wondered why I hadn't tried it before now. The Thai border crossing and minibus trip to Hat Yai were uneventful, and with a little help from a Swiss traveller who was on his way to Bangkok it didn't take long to find the guesthouse recommended by my guidebook for one night's stop over here, the Cathay Guesthouse. The lobby ... read more

Nach weiteren 4 ... read more
