We've been a bit slack with our blog entries, our apologies. Once we began island hopping along the Thai coast all routine was lost and internet connection sporadic! I'll try and summarise the islands soon. We are now in Krabi. Yesterday we extended our VISAs by 30 days to remove any stress of reaching Cambodia before we expired. Our current thoughts are to avoid Bangkok on our cycle route through Thailand, as although we know the flood waters are subsiding, the rural areas leading in may still be a nightmare and Bangkok can't be much fun to cycle through at the best of times. We went on a Thai cookery course yesterday which was enjoyable and rather tasty. I had felt that my spicy tolerance has been improving but I definitely cannot yet devour a red ... read more

This morning looks a better day for weather - and so it should. My milk-white skin is showing no signs of a tan so I need to put some hours in at the pool. I managed this for all of 3 hours before the weather turned from spectacularly sunny to gloriously grim. The rain thumped down and the thought of the 3 hr trip to Ko Lanta to meet Hannah (friend who I met on the plane coming over here) is looking less appealing by the minute. If the weather's the same over there, it's less tropical paradise and parasols and more torrential storms and umbrellas... The minivan collected me at 3pm so I'd get there for dinner time, which was great as we're down to have a three course home cooked meal at the luxury ... read more

Finally, a good night's sleep - just what I needed before the haul to Krabi this morning. I've decided to fly - I've heard that the coach down there is longer than the Next sale queue, so it's time to try to make the suitcase lighter than the 20kg required (already impossible). A quick barter with the taxi driver (wants 500 baht, so I tell him to put in on the meter and it turns out it's half the price...), and the madness of the airport beckons. I've never seen so many flat screen televisions being checked in onto flights in their boxes. Those electrical super-marketstalls must be doing a grand business if this is anything to go by. Just over an hour later and I'm in Krabi - grabbed by the bus woman the moment ... read more

Gibt es diesen Strand vielleicht ... read more

We had a huge backpacker versus flashpacker decision to make at (the fantastic) Bangkok airport as to how to get to the island of Koh Tao several hundred miles to the south. Flights were leaving within a few hours to Koh Samui at ninety-odd quid each and, although we didn’t really fancy Koh Samui, it would be a short boat ride to one of the other islands. Plan B was to get a train and taxi to the backpacker area of Bangkok where we could buy a ticket for an overnight bus and boat trip for about a tenner. The female half of our party was particularly keen to fly however I felt that we had been hopping around on too many flights recently and now was the time to get a feel for the area ... read more

We'd already picked our next destination, the Krabi Sands Resort, all we had to do was get there. We've learnt that in any given day, if you're going to try to use the public transport system, all you should do is move a short distance and arrive where you intend nice and early so that you have time to change your mind and go somewhere else if it's awful (like the Lampam Resort). The only down side to this trip was in Krabi where our van driver had lined us up with a "Tourist Information" chap. He called our intended destination and booked us in, no problem there, but then the taxi he'd arranged was his brother (?) and the fee was way more than it should have been. We spent a fair while arguing about ... read more

by Jan Welcome to Thailand After a good night sleep on a comfortable bed on a sleeper train from Kuala Lumpur we reached the Malaysian – Thailand border. The beds on the train are comfortable enough to get a good night's sleep and for 55 RM (11£) you really can not ask for much more. We did get woken up a few times during the night by a little girl on the lower bunk as she was sick and coughed all through the night. I dislike kids as much as the next guy, but still there is no reason for the nasty "shut up" comment aimed at this little kid by a Spanish girl sleeping a few bunks down the cart. I hope she got sick shortly after that, mean p@@a! The border crossing was easy ... read more

The papaya salad didn't stay with me too long. Too spicy for my digestive cultures apparently. I can't stay away from it though. I ordered some today with only one chili in it. Thats alright, right? I'm still in a state of euphoria from the trip to Krabi. It all was so enchanting, and I think Friday was the best of all the days we spent there. I'll tell you why: I was in the rainforest. At Thung Teao Forest, Gerard (the resort owner) took us off the path to find the crystal lagoon on our own. We walked on wood planks raised above the ground for a while, then the planks stopped suddenly and we had to trek on the soggy, root entangled ground. I felt like Chrysta, Magi, and Batty were staring at me ... read more

I just scorched my mouth. Not on hot, but on spice. I ate papaya salad again, and this time I asked for it to be Thai-style. I'll let you know how my digestive system likes that choice tomorrow. I got back from my trip to Krabi last night around 9ish. The flight only took about an hour, but I was dog tired and almost slept the whole way! It was an exhausting but truly wonderful vacation. Thats not me being annoyingly positive, it really was wonderful. We left Victory Monument around 5:15 on Thursday night on the #515 city bus. It took us 45 minutes to get about 3 miles. The traffic was that awful, but once we got on the expressway to the bus terminal, we made pretty good time and we arrived about a ... read more

I think we'll get done in lab around 7:30, 8:00 tonight; not quite a 12 hour day like I thought. So far, no problems with the OMP extraction but I'd better knock on my wooden lab bench. Don't you think that that would be a problem when you're working with infectious microbes? Its like a wooden cutting board; Janet Johnson said to use plastic because bacteria can fester in the wood. hahah "fester." Like Uncle Fester and Thing. Anyways, I still haven't recovered from the "vacation" this weekend. I'm realizing how much work it actually is to travel, and how little work it is to be in the lab. Saturday in Krabi wasn't so stressful though...well, not after about noon... We woke up that morning and had breakfast. I had museli: like what I made last ... read more
