Now this is going to be a short post as Krabi is literally ........pointless! There is nothing of value there whatsoever apart from the most amazing icecream that the world has ever invented! This ice cream was insane (i had Ferrero Roche and Oreo.....immense!!). Other than this though Krabi really reminds me of a package holiday to some scuzzy european destination.... all concrete and fake beaches and rude people! A number of Krabians (my new word for people that live in Krabi) decided that it was appropriate to remark on the curly-ness of my hair after i refused to eat at their restuarant and i was given alot of advice regarding flat irons ad generally how to blend in with other Krabians in the hair department!!!!! Now i did not ask for this advice and nor ... read more

We were due to get picked up at 6:30 am on the Sunday morning, in actual fact we were picked up about 7 and the ferry was due to go at 8. We were picked up with a Russian Family and a couple of British girls and told that the boat would depart at 8 and we had to walk to the end of the pier. Sure enough we followed the crowd shortly before 8, the boat left the harbor and turned straight round the Russian family were stood on the pier! Words failed me. The ferry back to the mainland was fine except the bus that we got to Krabi was disgusting. I actually thought that we would catch a terminal illness whilst traveling on it! We travelled to Krabi on the 24th Feb, it was only an hour away from Khao Sok so we got a minivan to Krabi town then a long boat to East Railay Beach. After wondering around for 2 hours trying to find a room we managed to get a room at Yaya Resort. That afternoon we headed to the beach and had a few Beer Changs later on. We decided to go snorkelling on our first full day in Krabi. We booked on an afternoon/evening snorkelling tour. We did the usual snorkelling but also got to do it at night and you get to see the phosphorus in the water (what happens is the water glows whenever you move – it feels like you are at a rave). Whilst snorkelling, I got a bit lost from ... read more

So, I have left Koh Tao and am now in Krabi, which is on the southeastern part of Thailand, on the Andaman Coast. I am taking a tour to the famous Koh Phi Phi Islands, which are absolutely gorgeous (go google it to see pictures), tomorrow. I am feeling a bit crabby in Krabi for three reasons: 1. I really miss Koh Tao, 2. It is raining (and it better not rain tomorrow!) and 3. I just realized that I somehow lost my only jacket on the minibus today, which is really stupid, because it was RIGHT WITH ME. Argh! By the way, this entry is not gonna be my best, because at the hostel where I am, they are playing this really loud sitcom, and it is quite distracting (although not in a good ... read more

Kia Ora Blokes and Blokettes Time for an update (and for me to record our travels before I forget!) and this time is our February 2011 holiday in Krabi. Having explored and loved Northern Thailand last year (Chiang Mai and surrounds) this time we wanted to check out the South we had heard so much about and with names like Phuket, Ko Samui, Krabi et al, - how could we resist. Jumping on the internet, reading blogs and talking to friends who have travelled this way before resulted in a bit of brain overload – TOO many choices – the thing is, I reckon, there aren’t any really bad ones. My Sis Chris from NZ was joining us, so we planned on meeting at Bangkok and spending a few days there first. I wasn’t that fussed ... read more

I didn't blog yesterday basically because I was hung over. I normally blog in the evening, but couldn't find the energy to do it. So I am going to put a few blogs in one. I've mentioned before that my insulin pump got wrecked because of the water. Tris and I thought of sending it home to BC so my mom could contact Minimed, the company the pump is from, to see what they could do. The postage to BC was around $12, cheap! Insurance would only cover $600 though and the pump is worth $7000. We went for a walk to find a place to make an international call, but everywhere said they couldn't call to a 1-800 number. As we were about to walk out of one place a man asked if we'd ... read more

We both woke up a little hurting this morning. Last night we went out to a widely advertised reggae party. Some girls from England joined our table and we got talking and drinking, which led to dancing and meeting some other guys from Calgary. I've mentioned a few times now that we are really cheap when it comes to buying things. Some of you might ask how cheap?.. well let me tell ya! It seems like everyone has checked out of our dorm room except for us. There was a pair of pants laying beside the garbage can, so Tris tried them on and they fit. FREE PANTS! You can imagine how excited we were! We spent the first part of the morning at tour agencies booking transportation. Tomorrow we head to Koh Jum, a small ... read more

Krabi and Phuket We left Koh Samui, on a less rocky ferry, and headed for Krabi. Once on the mainland we boarded a bus and headed West, the journey took about 4 hours due to stopping frequently. Once we arrived in Krabi we were dropped off in the middle of no where and took the one taxi, with lots of other people crammed in, into town. We checked into Cosy House, which was very cosy (Will's words!) and began to make grand plans about what we were going to do and see while we were there - Phi Phi, snorkeling, Railay beach...just as the heavens opened! On our second day we headed out to Ao Nang for a cookery course with Mrs Ya - our rainy day plan. We had a great afternoon making curry pastes ... read more

5:30 came early. We haven't been up at that time in almost a month. Hard to believe I used to wake up 5 days a week at that time to go to work. The bus picked us up at our hotel on time and drove us to the Pier. We then boarded a bigger bus. We drove up to the ferry then had to get off and walk on. This seems pretty normal, as when we were in Costa Rica last year and rented a car, I wasn't allowed to drive on the ferry with Tris. The ferry ride was maybe an hour and a half then we boarded the big bus again. We drove a little ways then stopped for 30 min at a place for lunch. We finally arrived in Krabi 9 hours after ... read more

It's hard to believe my month teaching is over. It was really sad saying goodbye to my house-mom, the volunteers and the students, but I'm excited to put my backpack on and start exploring SE Asia! In addition to having some fun teaching English and playing with the students, I had a blast enjoying Ao Nong beach after school, climbing 1,200+ stairs to the Tiger Temple, and taking a fun weekend trip to Phuket. It was one of the volunteers' birthday, so we shared a 10 person dorm room on Patong beach.... felt like I was back in college!.... crazy and strange place, but fun times and great memories with good people :-) Hope this finds you all happy and well. Big smiles and hugs XO... read more
