Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Rai April 13th 2011

Whilst in Pai, a Thai man had drawn us a map showing us the ways we could get to Chaing Rai. We decided to be brave (and tight with our money) and avoid using the tourist bus to get from Pai to Chaing Rai, we opted for the local bus. Everything was running smoothly, we had managed to get to Mae Malay, change buses there, got to Fang and then we were told the next bus to Chaing Rai was 2pm tomorrow. This was pretty annoying as there is nothing in Fang. It’s Thailand’s equivalent to Barnsley. We managed to get a hotel and we walked around the town that night before finally finding somewhere we could eat. We got up pretty early the next day and decided to make our own way to Chaing Rai, ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Pai April 13th 2011

Pai is a little backpacker town about 3 hours from Chaing Mai. We arrived on the 11th March and stayed at Happy House Guesthouse. Whilst in Pai we rented motorbikes and went to see Pai Canyon, a waterfall and again more temples. It started out really well on the bikes – it was a boiling hot day then in the afternoon the weather changed and it started torrentially raining which made riding the bikes quite difficult. There was half moon party on in the jungle whilst we were there. This was good, involved us getting drunk once again and therefore, Hayley walking around with her top inside out for the majority of the night and me hungover for 2 days once again!! We stayed for 5 nights in total, without really doing that much except chilling ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai April 13th 2011

The journey to Chaing Mai was another overnight job, we set off on the 6th March and arrived the next day around 7am. Unfortunately, we didn’t get much sleep as the people sitting behind us had hooked up and decided to have sex which meant they kept kneeing us in the back!! We stayed at Namkhong Guesthouse which was about 10 minutes out of town. We did a bit of sightseeing and went to see various temples. We hired a motorbike and went to a temple outside of town called Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep. It was amazing temple on a hill outside of the main city. I did a spot of downhill cycling for a day whilst I was there and Hayley did a Thai cookery course. The cycling was really good but very difficult, it ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok April 13th 2011

We left PhiPhi about 12:30pm on the 1st March and arrived in Bangkok at 7am the next day. As per usual, we had to walk around for ages, half asleep trying to get a room (remind me why we don’t book in advance again?!). We stayed at Lucky Guesthouse which was okay – although Hayley got bedbug bites from here. We stayed 4 nights in Bangkok but didn’t actually do a lot. We went to the Siam shopping malls which are really big with lots of western shops – this excited Hayley. We also went to Pantip Plaza, which is a massive IT mall and brought a netbook – this exited me. We did a lot of walking up and down Khao San Road buying new clothes. We bumped into some people from Langkawi and spent ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Phi Phi Don April 13th 2011

We left for Koh Phi-Phi on the 27th Feb, the journey was just a few hours on a ferry and was relatively painless. We got a bungalow at PhiPhi Hill Resort, Haad Yao Beach it was quite expensive but really nice. We had to walk up 86 steps everytime we went from the beach to our room which was pretty tiring in the heat. We only stayed in Phi-Phi 2 nights as we'd already done the tour (mentioned previously in my Koh Lanta blog), this was the only disappointment as we'd both much rather have done the tour here rather than from Koh Lanta, it is also a lot cheaper to do the tours from Koh Phi-Phi. We decided just to relax and not do any sightseeing. We spent a day on the beach snorkelling – ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Krabi April 13th 2011

We travelled to Krabi on the 24th Feb, it was only an hour away from Khao Sok so we got a minivan to Krabi town then a long boat to East Railay Beach. After wondering around for 2 hours trying to find a room we managed to get a room at Yaya Resort. That afternoon we headed to the beach and had a few Beer Changs later on. We decided to go snorkelling on our first full day in Krabi. We booked on an afternoon/evening snorkelling tour. We did the usual snorkelling but also got to do it at night and you get to see the phosphorus in the water (what happens is the water glows whenever you move – it feels like you are at a rave). Whilst snorkelling, I got a bit lost from ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Khao Sok NP April 11th 2011

We decided to go to this national park for a change of scenery and spend a few days away from the beach. We arrived 2 days after the Full Moon Party (I was still Slightly hungover!!) on the 21st February. After the full moon party there is a mass of travellers leaving Koh Phagnan so the ferries off the island are very busy. The journey to Khao Sok involved a ferry then a minibus. Once we arrived we found some accommodation at Banana Hut Resort. On our first day in Khao Sok we went on a tour around Cheow Larn Lake. This is a massive man-made lake. The scenery was amazing. We went on a longboat around the lake then we were able to swim in the water. Being in freshwater felt really refreshing, we stayed ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Pha-Ngan March 15th 2011

We arrived on Koh Phangan at about 6am on the 16th February following a bus to Krabi (from Koh Lanta), another minibus to Surat Thani and finally a night ferry to Koh Pangan. It was a fairly painless if quite long journey. The night ferry was a claustrophobic experience - you were unable to stand. We were a bit worried we would struggle to find accommodation as the full moon party was on the 19th but there was a tout at the dock who recommended Haad Guard Resort – we got a taxi there and managed to get a room right on the beach for 400baht a night (with a hot shower which is a luxury whilst travelling the islands). On our first full day we did a trip which involved having a monkey climb all ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta March 14th 2011

On the 9th February, we decided to travel to Koh Lanta. The journey was semi painless –just a few hours on the ferry. We decided to go to Klong Nin Beach – this was a big mistake! The beach itself is pretty nice but the accommodation we stayed at (Charlee Bungalows) was horrific!! On our first day we chilled in a beach bar with some South African girls we met, drank lots of vodka redbull and played cards for hours. When we went to bed, we realised just how rough our beach bungalow actually was – cockroaches, hermit crabs, bed with no mattress and a constant scratching noise from under the floor boards which was potentially rats. We tried our best to stay up all night to avoid spending anytime in the room and lasted until ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Muk March 12th 2011

On the 7th February, after spending 2 nights in Trang we decided to go move onto Koh Mook, a small island just off Trang. This involved a minibus then our first (of many) trip on a Thailand longboat to Koh Mook. After arriving on a beautiful beach we set off to look for accommodation, when I say set off to look I actually mean accepting the first place we saw despite it being one of the most expensive we had stayed in to date at 800 Baht a night. The next day we went on a trip on a longboat to the Emerald Cave, this involved swimming for about 5 minutes through a cave with only the guide's torch to see where we were going before emerging in a beautiful lagoon. This really was an amazing ... read more
