I like lizards
photographing them anyway I didn't blog yesterday basically because I was hung over. I normally blog in the evening, but couldn't find the energy to do it. So I am going to put a few blogs in one. I've mentioned before that my insulin pump got wrecked because of the water. Tris and I thought of sending it home to BC so my mom could contact Minimed, the company the pump is from, to see what they could do. The postage to BC was around $12, cheap! Insurance would only cover $600 though and the pump is worth $7000. We went for a walk to find a place to make an international call, but everywhere said they couldn't call to a 1-800 number. As we were about to walk out of one place a man asked if we'd like to use his cell phone. I said that would be wonderful and Tris sat down. Minimed said I have warrenty for another year which is lucky, and I have to give them an address to send me a new one. We will be in Chiang Mai for a couple weeks when we get there, so I am going to call back as we'll have
a more permanent 'home'. We ended up sitting with the guy, his name was Angus for 4-5 hours shootin the shit and drinking beers. He is from Switzerland and lives in Dubai. He makes big bucks delivering fruit freights. He did make a good point though. He questions whether he made the right choice in life. He's 50 years old, and yes he has a lot of money, but he's never been married, doesn't have kids, and at times he feels he's missed out. Anyway, we went back to our guest house, had a nap... I woke up feeling like complete garbage but went with Tris down to the restaurant to have a bite to eat, then headed back up to the room shortly after. The room has no water as the government shut all the water off to Krabi because of contamination from the excess rain. I ended up getting sick but had nothing to clean up with except a bottle of water. Luckily I made it to the bathroom. Once that was over though my stomach felt better and I was able to watch a bit of tv and then fall asleep.
Next Day
We
had some breakfast at Cafe 89 like we regularly do then went to the travel agency called Yes I Can. This is where we bought our train ticket back to Bangkok from. Since Surat Thani (where the train leaves from ) is under water we wanted to know if the train would actually leave on the 3rd. She said she didn't know and wouldn't know until April 3rd. She said we could get a refund if the train doesn't go. Since we have other tickets depending on us getting to Bangkok we really can't chance it. She priced out a plane ticket for us and we said we'd think about it. We went back to our guest house for a nap then went down to Good Dreams (another guesthouse/restaurant that we've come to really like) to use their internet as the wifi at our guesthouse blows. We found the price of a flight for a little cheaper then what the lady at Yes I Can quoted us. We didn't have time right then to book it as we had a thai cooking class to go to but at least we knew the price. We got picked up for thai cooking
in a regular truck where we sit in the back on benches. The drive wasn't that far, maybe 10 minutes. We had to go down a rocky muddy road and the trucks battery ended up dying.. not really sure how.. but oh well. We got out and walked the 5 minutes to the cooking place, which turns out to be the lady's house. She had it set up really nice though with stoves along one wall and the main cooking table in the middle. We each got to choose 5 dishes that we wanted to learn. Tris and I decided to choose different dishes from each other so we got a chance to make more and try more things. We first had to make our own curry paste. It took a lot of spices and vegetables ground together in a mortar and pestle ( I have no clue if I spelled that right??) and eventually it turned into a paste. It took a lot of grinding though. The food was a lot easier to make then we expected. Its hard to believe they do this every morning to prepare currys and food. For us, its easier to go to the
supermarket and buy it premade. We prepared all the vegetables and sauces for the other dishes and she walked us through the cooking. Everything tasted amazing!!!!!!!! We have a recipe book so we can make the recipes at home.
